Im a Sheetmetal worker of 46 yrs. and worked for a period of 8 yrs. in the Nuclear industry. Every thing that was fabricated was Tig welded together. The carbon steel had to be ground till all the scale was gone in an area approx. 1" around where the the weld was to be. We then had to use Acetone to clean the area to be welded so there would be no imperities to effect the weld. On thin carbon steel it had to be done on both sides of the sheets that would be welded. And while welding there was someone following on the opposite side of the sheet with a purge cup or block to keep the crystallisation from forming. This system produced beautiful welds, of course with no porosity.

Considering this sheet bender was made from obviously scrap crappy steel it's not a bad job at all. Well done, one thing would improve it, is a pair of springs over the hold down bolts so the clamping bar rises when the bolts are undone.

SAMRODIAN, thanks. I used this the other day to make a u shaped bracket out of aluminum. I also lengthened the slots on the bottom using a burr

It's hard to get real accurate pieces with a setup like that.

Hinge too small and will loosen too quickly, bending leaf is too wide , should be only about a half inch, reinforce below with addl plate. Admiring isn't bad but an experienced sheet metal fabricator easily sees the brakes design deficiency.
