You mentioned the red doors on the church and this is what I found...symbolizes the sacrificial blood of Christ that saves those who come to him. Red is also a reminder of the Passover and a sign of the Holy Spirit. Church doors began to be painted red as a way of remembering the ultimate sacrifice that others had made for their faith. the sacrificial blood of Christ that saves those who come to him. Red is also a reminder of the Passover and a sign of the Holy Spirit. Church doors began to be painted red as a way of remembering the ultimate sacrifice that others had made for their faith.

My daddys people were from Troutdale. Daddy bought a place in Sugar Grove. An Aunt & Uncle lived out the street across from the Marathon. Grandaddy & daddy always said Dr. Pepper was created in Rural Retreat, then the Pharmacist moved to TX.

The Dr. Pepper and Rural Retreat myth is just that. Whomever made it up certainly didn't apply any facts to the story. Dr. Charles Pepper had nothing to do with it, or the men who invented it. "Dr. Pepper" was invented by a druggist in Waco, Texas, who happened to be an employee of pharmacy owner Wade Morrison. Since the concoction was a product of his drug company, Morrison had the honor of naming the drink. Morrison was originally from Christiansburg, VA, and had clerked in a drugstore there as a youth. Morrison's mentor there would have been Dr. William Alexander Reed Pepper (older brother of Dr. Charles Pepper), and practiced in Montgomery County his entire adult life. Young Morrison had 'kept company' with Dr. WAR Pepper's daughter, Millie, until Morrison's family moved to Texas in 1872. Dr. Charles Pepper began his practice of medicine in 1858, first in Pulaski County, then Giles and Washington Counties, and did a stint as a Surgeon in the Confederate Army, then around 1872, he moved to Rural Retreat. Dr. Charles didn't even open up his Rural Retreat store until 2 years after Morrison had left the state, so Morrison definitely never worked for him. Dr. Charles Pepper's only daughter wasn't born until 1874, 2 years after Morrison left the state, so Morrison certainly never dated her.

The piles are still up, but ive not hung clothes on the line in years. Im planning on ordering y'alls book directly. Is your home address on Lavinia Street in Bristol still a good address?? Thats the only address i had when i sent you the Weyanoke Coal and Coke Camp photograph to Shane. O. I guess I'll have to get your book now to hear your story about Dr. Pepper. I remember the old drug store in Rural Retreat that had the "home of Dr. Pepper" sign on it. I was told it burned down many years ago. My knowledge of the story was the pharmacist, Dr. Pepper worked (or perhaps owned) the local drug store and the drink (not developed in VA) was named after him because of a family connection or something like that.
