They fled persecution in Sri Lanka, then India, hoping to reach Canada. Instead, 56 Tamil asylum seekers have found themselves stranded on a British Indian Ocean island for almost three years. Pressure is growing on Home Secretary Yvette Cooper to give them safe haven in the UK. The British Indian Ocean Territory Commissioner says they are so desperate that 22 were involved in a mass suicide attempt.
The migrants left India on a fishing trawler sailing south, before the boat got into trouble. They were rescued by the Royal Navy, and taken to a small camp on the UK/US military base of Diego Garcia.
Channel 4 News has obtained exclusive pictures of the camp.
