It is possible to cut with 5W - but it is quite slow. As you said: keychains go well, they are small. If you are doing bigger pieces, it takes forever. And anything thicker is not viable. Advice is, well, everyone must consider it a general orientation. Your use-case determines what you actually need.

@GeekDetour
2 жыл бұрын
Fair question! At no moment I compared it to any other diode laser machine. As the D1 is my first laser machine, I focused on showing how was my personal experience with it. That said, I am always watching other reviewers - that used many different lasers. There is a consensus that the D1 is a premium machine. The way the machine squares easily and moves with great precision/rigidity calls the attention time and time again. I am pretty sure you can make nice work with cheaper machines. How cheaper? Good question. When you look for 10W optical (or 20W), machines don’t get so much cheaper than the D1. You can only go really cheap when lasers are 5W or less… but then, you can basically just engrave. Here is someone who tried a bunch of lasers: kzitem.info/news/bejne/p5VpmYObhoaXZKg PS: he also gets most of the machines for free 🤷♂️

I'm kinda sketched out by the lack of Light spread protection. Like that shroud still has the gap at the bottom where you can the backscatter shining through. And it's pretty easy to do long term damage to your eyes from high powered lasers like that. Like if you take off the safety' glasses while it's running or if someone enters the room while the machine is running.

You are absolutely right - I bought more glasses (for my wife and daughter, because they wanted to see it working. While was working on this review I always told them that I was “locking myself to use the laser”, please don’t get in without a glass. On the long run you need to make an enclosure so everybody is safe. Right now I still use it occasionally, but I am planing a permanent place for it on my new studio/workshop. PS: when I recorded the intro for the video, I took the glasses out, but on the angle I was I could not see any light from the laser. This is NOT a toy.

Hi, great video. I have the same xtool d1 10W version, but sometimes I have problems when trying to cut MDF, sometimes the laser doesn't pass through MDF even when 1 make 2 or 3 passes. Is there a special type of MDF to use with xtool D1?
@GeekDetour
2 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Thanks 🤗 First thing to look IMMEDIATELY: is the lens clean? A couple of hours cutting MDF and (if you don’t have Air Assist installed - like I don’t) the lens get enough dirt to reduce its power. There is a risk of ruining the lens. Always clean it! 2nd: what thickness of MDF? I was cutting 3mm (1/8th inch) MDF at 3mm/second, 100% power. If it is thicker, multiple passes are the way. But check the lens, keep it clean. I will certainly install Air Assist on my D1, it helps to cut things clean and without much burning marks.
