Home to Mandalay (version 2) by Wayne A. Melvin and Lloyd Litke, c2023, SOCAN
Unfurl the sails, boys, catch the raging wind, boys
Run the Roaring Forties, the China Seas
From high aloft the clipper, the good Thermopylae
Race us back to home, boys, home from Mandalay
When clippers ruled the winds, all the seven seas,
They raced to bring the first teas back to Royalty
From fragrant Foo-Chow, the harbour of Shanghai,
And then there was that one time, she sailed from Mandalay
In the Irrawaddy, river dolphins play
Up that winding river, there's a wide shining bay
A Hill of golden temples, serenely gazing down -
Temple bells ringing, jasmine scattered ‘round
Unfurl the sails, boys, catch the raging wind, boys
Run the Roaring Forties, the China Seas
From high aloft the clipper, the good Thermopylae
Race us back to home, boys, home from Mandalay
Once I was the master of all her sails and riggin'
Now I haunt the docks, in case a bit o' work comes beggin'
She is bearing coal and lumber, at least another day,
But once she was the fastest ship from here to Mandalay
Now she’s all tied down at these cold Victoria docks
Her with creakin’ timbers, and me, my crooked back
How I wish that I could race her, one final leeward run -
A thousand gold pagodas are waiting in the sun . . .
Unfurl the sails, boys, catch the raging wind, boys
Run the Roaring Forties, the China Seas
From high aloft the clipper, the good Thermopylae
Race us back to home, boys, home from Mandalay
Unfurl the sails, boys, catch the raging wind, boys
Run the Roaring Forties, the China Seas
From high aloft the clipper, the good Thermopylae
Race us back to home, boys, home from Mandalay
