Nice video. I have been wanting to change my setup and I like the HERMS setup you have. Thanks for sharing a video of your brew day. Happy brewing!

I've updated my setup since this video. I now employ 2 pumps so that I can have everything on the ground level. I replaced the cooler with a converted keg, and added a blichman 15gal boil kettle. I now use a 3rd burner so I can direct fire the mash as needed. I ferment 5 gal batches in glass, and 10gal batches either in 2 glass carboys, or I now have a 14gal stainless conical. I keg everything in corney kegs.

The one I use is the only one that my home brew shop sells. I think it pumps at 5 gpm max, but I have an inline valve that let's me slow the flow rate to where I want it.

Great video! I am wanting to do something similar for my system. Can you post a video explaining the different components of the set up and the parts needed. Also, did you make your mash tun out of a 10 gallon cooler, or did you buy it assembled? What type of false bottom are you using and what dip tube? Thanks in advance.

@hodd001 I did try step mashing with just the coil, and it takes too long. I recently upgraded my mash tun to a converted keg and have found that direct fire on the mash to raise temps works VERY well. I only add fire to raise the temp, not to maintain, and since the wort is recirculating, you get even temps throughout, and you have a much lower risk of scorching.

Very helpful for someone in the process of accumulating some equipment. Those burners and frames look ideal for this method. Are those fairly easy to find or are they custom?

I have a couple questions for ya. one, when you're recirculating your wort through the herms coil, how are you preventing stratification in the hlt, so that you're keeping your wort a consistent temp? two, have you ever had a collapsed grain bed, while recirculating, that hindered the flow while you were recirculating? I sure do like the simplicity of your setup! seems like a great way to go herms without paying a ton for control panels, sensors, and all the other seemingly superfluous things that you could pay out the arse for. thanks for the video!

I'm not certain I follow the first part of you question, but basically I use the HLT to help control the temperature in the mash. When I see the temperature dip, I add heat to the HLT, which heats up the wort in the coil, and increases the temperature in the mash. It may not seem all that fast or impactful, but I'm able to keep my mash temps to within a degree of my set point with this method. If I'm aiming for 154 and I see 153 on the thermometers, I can add flame to the HLT and over the course of 5min or so, and it's back to 154. It's much less harsh than heating the mash directly and potentially scorching anything. (ps...I now use 3 stainless barrels. I rarely use the converted cooler anymore) I've never collapsed a grain bed, but if I do end up heating the mash directly, I have to be very careful because if you heat it too much, you can stop the flow and scorch the wort.

Nice setup so during the mash if the hlt temp drops you have to turn on the flam to get it back up? how many times would you need to do this over the hour? was looking for something automated with electric but its so damn complicated with all the wiring I like the simplicity of yours. Id just have to stand around and wait for the temp to drop and turn my elements on to mimic yours. also was going to use the coil as an immersion chiller too.

@Petrolstar78 70% every time. I prefer to fly sparge mostly because it's far less labor intensive, but also, I've spent all this time settling the grain and filtering the wart thorough, why would I want to go mixing everything up by batch sparging.

If you have a cooler mash tun why do you need a HERMS? Won’t the cooler hold the temperature?

In an hour i turn on the flame for a minute or 2, 3 or 4 times. If you insulate your mash tun you may not have to do it at all. I also have the HLT 5 -10 degrees higher than my mash temp,.

I made 5gal with this setup. I now have a 15gal boil, turned one keg into a mash tun, and now I can make 10gal batches. Over the past 5 years I have probably put a $2-3K into my setup. The cooler can be made for $50 I'd guess, each of the kegs is maybe $125, each thermometer is 40ish, pumps are $120ea, Burners are maybe $50 ea? I'm just guessing at this point.

If you direct fire the mash you definitely want to have some sort of re circulation so you don't burn anything.

I like this set up. Simple and effective. How do you control your HLT temp during mash recirculating? Or does the HLT temp hold temp the entire time?
@enohcs

+Darin Mohr The HLT has a burner under it. I keep the water a few degrees higher than the mash temp and add a flame if it drifts too low.

+Darin Mohr it the basic $120 pump that you will find at northern brewer. For the fittings, do t use the plastic ones I have here. I upgraded to the stainless cam locks that you can get from Brewers hardware.

Nice setup and video. I've been looking into creating a tiered setup and this was very helpful. I do want to advise that you change those tubes though... Not safe to use PVC vinyl with hot liquids, as they aren't made for that. You are potentially leaching harmful chemicals into your beer.

+Adam Jones Thermoplastic or silicon high temp tubing are good options. Unless the tubing specifically mentions it is safe for high temp applications, I wouldn't recommend using it. They are easily found at any brewing store, physical or online.

1. a mash can involve a number of different rests 2. NO. Yeast need that oxygen to form healthy cell walls. Oxygenate the heck out of it before pitching yeast.

Good use of an immersion chiller for HERMS. However, I see two serious issues with your setup. First, you are using PVC vinyl tubing which could leach harmful chemicals into your beer. It is only appropriate to use for cold liquids but not for hot wort. Silicone tubing is inert and safe for food. Second, you keep spashing your hot wort as you recirculate. Ever hear of hot side aeration...John Palmer speaks of a bit in "How to Brew".
@markvitucci7438

Shouldn't have to worry about that given the amount of liquid and its intensity of "splashing." It's not like he's dropping a gallon of hot wort from multiple feet above.
