This is a Public Service Announcement I wanted to put together as part of my self-teaching of video production. It is a topic that is near and dear to my heart.
Point-in-Time (PIT) Count
Everyone Counts in the Effort to End Veteran Homelessness
The Point-in-Time (PIT) count is an annual effort led by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to estimate the number of Americans, including Veterans, without safe, stable housing. It is one of the tools used to assess yearly progress toward the VA's priority goal of ending homelessness among Veterans.
The January 2023 PIT Count
The national snapshot of Veteran homelessness showed that:
There are currently over 41,000 veterans experiencing homelessness in the United States today.
The largest population of homeless veterans occurs in California.
In 2023, the total number of Veterans who experienced homelessness was 35,574 - an increase of 7.4% over January 2022.
The estimated number of Veterans experiencing homelessness in America has declined by 52.0% since 2010.
Breaking this down further, 20,067 Veterans experienced sheltered homelessness, and 15,507 Veterans experienced unsheltered homelessness.
Veterans who experience sheltered homelessness often live in places such as emergency shelters, transitional housing programs, or other supportive settings.
Homeless veterans make up 13% of all homeless in the United States.
The factors that affect most homeless individuals are lack of affordable housing, poverty, job or income loss, mental illness, substance abuse, health problems, etc. Many veterans live with the lingering effects of PTSD, often compounded by a lack of family and social support networks.
