Similar to creme de cassis, the blackcurrant liqueur, blueberry liqueur is a simple maceration of fresh (or frozen) fruit with alcohol, a sweetener like sugar, honey or maple syrup, and a few other things you can play around with. It's a perfect, easy-entry recipe for making homemade liqueurs and, as long as you follow my advice and don't get too crazy with the additions, easy to improvise with. Great for making drinks, pouring over vanilla ice cream, or sipping all by itself, or, my favorite: mixed with champagne for a cocktail I call the blueberry royale.
I add a good splash of my wild vanilla extract here, as well as a few all spicebush berries. The secret to a really potent blueberry flavor though, is using a few spoonfuls of dried blueberry powder. This is just blueberries dried without adding any sugar and ground in a coffee or spice grinder. I've never dried cultivated blueberries, but you could try. I have only used wild blueberries to make blueberry powder.
