I made a gouge from a ring spanner (wrench) because I don’t own a real wood-turning bowl-making gouge. And it worked. These are not finished bowls - they’re turned from green elm wood so they still need to dry out a lot. Rough-turning the bowls on a lathe first speeds up the drying process and means they are less likely to crack.
In fact, a gouge probably isn't all that much to buy - but I didn't look very hard because I wanted to give this a try.
I’m sure I haven’t tempered this gouge very well in the forge - I’m hoping I might get some advise on this from viewers - but it seems to hold an edge well, so it can’t be too bad.

Yes, it’s a terrible thing to do to a spanner - I have no excuses, except they’re imperial and almost everything I have is metric.
By the way, I have no idea how I’m going to put those plates back on the lathe…
