Thanks for showing that idea I just finished making mine

You can use a rubber mallet and work that sharp edge down and then fold it for a nice radius top edge. The base idea is brilliant. I never had any use for the middle of the barrel. Cool.

The only thing I can see doing differently is after the first burn then I'll paint it. The original paint I don't believe would be heat resistant and might bubble.

That's one of the nicest 55 gallon metal drum fire pits I've seen someone make. Excellent job, you just gave me a new project. 👍

The more holes you drill the more "smokeless" it becomes...but it burns faster and eats a lot of wood. My uncle made one without the fancy base (which I really like. We used it on three cinder blocks. It had same size holes but approx 3x as many. We also drilled 4 small 1/4" drain holes in the bottom (in case of rain). It lasted over 30 years worth of Canadian summers (mid May to mid Oct).

Do the holes in the top ring help with the smoke?

The 15 bucks was probably just for a can of hi temp paint

I haven't had any luck with heat proof paint. What brand do you recommend?

I've never had a problem with ceramic header paint. You have to cure it properly thru heat cycles
