I built this style in a 12" diameter steel pipe, with 2" thick cement walls, so an 8" diameter inside. I successfully forged commercially for several years. I used it horizontally, and it was perfect for long and localized heats. I even forge welded in it. If I wanted a more controlled heat, I put firebrick at either end. One or both ends, depending on the work.

@Wayne Earls I Have built a similar homemade furnace, and bought a Graphite crucible, which i see turns red around bottom after 10 mins, My question is When burning the aluminium cans they or just turning to dust or oxidising i put in around 18 an no aluminium at all? Can you tell me what i may be doing wrong... The cans melted and got really soft to keep pushing one on top of each other but yet after 40 mins coal was burning out and nothing but ashs left in crucible?

Do not use cans. Once a can is melted, it is like a drop of aluminum. I use old and broken aluminum car rims. I cut them up with a grinder into a size that will fit into my crucible.

I bet it's the UK. You can't buy ANYTHING here. Everything has to be online. Forget anything and your project is delayed by days. Obviously you have every day life to do to, so by the time your stuff arrives you may not have time for your project. Then you finally get a free day for your project and you realise you need something else... OK see the project in a few weeks. It's so shit here.

Vermiculite expands to 3x as it's water retention media for plants. What do you think will happen when air displaces the water content? What happens when the trapped air heats to 1000°C+, my guess is it'll blow holes in the cured concrete from the pressure exerted. What I would be using is a quatz based *silicon sand* mixed with *Limestone* and *refractory cement* smeared over a Ceramic Fiber Wool Blanket reinforced by steel mesh then another layer of sand / lime / foundry cement mix with 1/5 part perlite. With an air channel running against drum and steel mesh leading to exhaust air inlet to maximize efficiency. (Although the air channel isn’t necessary it just transfers some of the thermals back into the furnace) The lawn mower base is a good idea though. Your mix is like a bomb though very dangerous waiting to explode. haha. Must have shit yourself when the foundry shattered?
@WayneEarls
4 жыл бұрын
Honestly I've only fired it twice since I built it. I have been busy. I have plans to get it going and also my small one real soon. I used vermiculite because I've seen others use it. But either way, I'm going with ceramic wool and refractory cement from now on. Thanks for the comment, I'll be sure to stand clear while I fire it a few cycles.
