I like this kind of storytelling. It's sort of "gaming in the gaps" which is where Warhammer shines. I did something similar with my Tempestus Scions. I mixed them with the Palanite Enforcers to make an Inquisitorial retinue for one of the older metal Inquisitors.

My Thousand Sons army is painted normally, they're known as the scholars of the false enumerator for they are all students of a thousand sons leviathan dreadnought (who is kitbashed to be exuding tentacles and ooze from between his armor seams). This is the ancient thousand sons chief magister and enumerator of the 12th circle on Prospero. After the heresy he was gravely wounded and bound to a leviathan dreadnought. Although he is still a powerful psycher, he exists constantly on the precipice of an infernal transformation, for he is just mere seconds away from succumbing to the flesh change. Using all of his psychic might, along with the arcane life support of his sarcophagus, Tal Rasha is able to maintain his form. His sanity has long since abandoned him though. His ramblings though offer his scions glimpses into the future, and his ancient siege weapons tear asunder all who stand against the Scholars.

Way back in the day (2nd or 3rd edition) I had a squad of marines that had three units that always seemed to live. So I started some lore about them being blessed by the emporer for some reason. I'd even voice them kn the field while playing. Good times. I also wrote a little short story of the opening crusade battle I was in. I'll post it below, if it'll let me. Hope you enjoy.

I really love storytelling like this, I think it’s the most fun part of the hobby. I’m just finishing up my first army, which is a kitbash of primaris and death guard models, painted in the standard Death Guard colors. The idea for my army is that they’re a chapter that only very recently swore themselves over to Nurgle, so the amount of corruption on a lot of the models is minimal but still present. It started just as a way to get the most out of the Dark Imperium box, but it’s since become my pride and obsession.

I put together my Space Marines army with homebrewed lore in mind! They are IF successors that were created for the purpose of defending a far-flung forge world, and were taken surprise by an attack by craftworld aeldari which left their planet almost completely destroyed. They are now excavating and terraforming the ruined world with the goal of returning it to its former glory. To reflect this, they use a lot of relict wargear that would be too rare or outdated to find in most Space Marine armories, and a lot of their armor is often kitbashed together using both newer Primaris models and older bits. And yes, the new HH releases are going to add a lot of character to them!

I've got the beggining of an imperial guard force made just for cool kitbash stuff. They're from a wealthy trade hub planet (that I made up ages ago for a 40k rpg campaign), so speacial or powerful weapons are common but with little uniformity. I currently plan to use it justify having leman russ heavy army but use differenty 4rd party sculpts for each one to represent the fact they were bought from different worlds and shipped in.

If you need a reason for the necron’s accent color I’d say they could be from a solar system with a weak sun. In order to stop frost build up they have a different charging system that keeps their joints warm. Or just better camouflage on desert planets cause green stands out more in a desert then orange.

I do love building lore into my models. My admech are mostly mechanicum models from forge world and the lore is that they had some forbidden info that was saved by a heretical tech priest which at first they ignored, considering it heretical but not enough to destroy. But then their sun was destroyed by necrons and their tiny forgeworld was thrown into space. Desperate and freezing they turned to the heretical tech priest who shared knowledge of mechanicum constructs with them, and how to program them to act as a person would without a human mind (basically AI). They built internal forges in their bodies and weapons to keep them warm so they have glowing orange eyes and guns, and they now hide out on their rogue forgeworld drifting through interstellar space and innovating, completely forgotten by the imperium.

I think this is one of the most fun ways to do 40k. My Tyranids, Genestealer Cult, and Tau armies all have connected lore, and my World Eaters keep their Heresy blues to force the Imperium to remember their dark past. But this is also a good idea for if you play before you paint too. If a model still in gray or only primed does something special on the table, you can come up with some special mini lore for it and use that to give a special idea when painting it.

He wants to prove to him that psykers are a very valuable tool and should not be so disrespectfully shunned. So Morty gave him a troupe of Deathshroud to make sure the Plaguecaster doesn’t do anything against him. The bodyguards protect the Plaguecaster, but they also wait for Morty to give the order to slay their companion if he were to fail or make any move against Mortarion.

This is I guess my lore for a part of my T'au army, although I do still paint the Vior'la and T'au schemes. The Kamata'yan sept, essentially they are the result of what happens if a T'au citizen commits a crime or an infantry deserts their own kind, or rejects the way of the Greater good and the Ethereals. The Kamata'yan don't have a home planet unlike most septs, and are mainly placed wherever they're needed, to practically become meatshields in the event of battle, and since they're all criminals or war criminals their losses are less cared for by their race, and they are treated more as animals. Kamatayan is the Finnish/Tausūg way of pronouncing Death, as for the opposition that'll face up against them will only see the consequence they will get, through the names of the soldiers. The Kamata'yan due to their criminal members are high in numbers and have usually been deemed as even more violent and destructive than the Farsight Enclaves seen on the Eastern fringe, and the Vior'la sept which is also located on the Eastern fringe. Despite being like mercenaries, the Kamata'yan sept do not form any alliances with the Farsight Enclaves, as their punishment for crimes is to fight for the Greater good to spare themselves from prison time, or straightforward torture. The scheme for them if you're interested was inspired by Cranky Studios Grim-dark T'au.

making your own story for your minis is more than half the thing for me :) I'm currently working on some Blood Ravens stuck on some muddy planet on the hunt for knowledge and following a lead on who might be their primarch. Is it Dorn, is it Corvus Corax, or is it, Emperor forbid it, the heretical Magnus? Or are they some bastardization, some on holy mix of geneseed? They have been stuck on this planet for a few years now, unable to call for aid and both their aged armor and gears shows it as well as their increased brutality. Another project I'm working on is a rag tag Space Marine Assault Squad where every legionnaire will be from a different legion. My idea for them is for each of the five legionaries to be from a different chapter, even some loyalists from heretic legions. Those loyal heretics were frozen in stasis vaults as some sort of cruel punishment but were later freed and allowed to keep on serving the Emperor. This elite Assault Squad has been attached the Blood Ravens stuck on Mud Planet and fights alongside them and they are getting suspicious over the Blood Ravens secrecy. So far I have decided on having a Crimson Fist (with red trims and not boring blue ones), a World Eater or War Hound , a pre Prospero Thousand Sons, an Invaders, and an Imperial Star. Might switch one or two for a Destroyers and Yellow Jackets marine for some different colors. A great way for picking new marines to paint, especially when doing mixed squads, is to look up a founding and then look at the marines and pick a few schemes that you like and get inspired by them. There are so many existing chapters that there is no need to reinvent the wheel every time.

Thank you for the awesome inspiration!! I love it!! You’ve just opened my mind to a new level with model making! I recently completed 20 Death Korps of krieg models along with a gene stealer Achilles ridge runner as a small army unit a couple months ago with this same idea of going completely off the wagon and making my own story and lore. I painted up my Krieg units in similarly to ww2 and ww1 era German soldiers as well as throwing in some markings and such. I mean generally speaking I think we all have that reminder from them but I took it a step further and built a really sweet trench diorama and including a custom ride runner that’s “captured” and painted up all rusty and in similar colors to my new “ Space Wehrmacht” The story is simple, yet faded as time passes these soldiers press on they’ve been cut off from their home world of Krieg, they no longer follow the morals or ethics of Krieg. They’ve adopted the values of a people whom we’re long gone. They’ve adopted their symbols, combat tactics that have been considered to be obsolete compared to todays strategies. However, they’ve proven successful. My Space Wehrmacht are swift ruthless killers that show no mercy and take no prisoners.

Drukhari were my first every army back in 2014 and I sadly sold the army during some hobby down time between 2016-2019. When i restarted the hobby i went back into the Drukhari almost instantly and have felt a connection with them for the longest time. When I decided I wanted to start a space marines army, I read into the White Scars and found that they fight with the Drukhari a lot, and I wanted to find a way to incorporate that into my force. So I decided that my Drukhari army and my White Scars would be mortal enemies, splinters of their main forces who do battle on an arid desert planet over a webway gate that has been active their since the way in heaven which enters directly into the heart of Commorragh. The secret 15th battalion of the White Scars, codenamed The Folded Dawn, lead by their Leader, Khan Arban Santarius, fight wrestle control of the webway gate away from the horrific Drukhari so that they may enter and look for their lost Primarch, as is their unending cause. The Drukhari however are not push overs. The Webway Gate is protected by a Haemonculus Coven and the Kabal and Wych Cult that work for them. Heamonculus Organ Tralk, who only answers to Vect himself, sends the Folded Dawns dead back at them with waves and waves of Talos and Wracks, and Drehzadeza and Bearessa Dragoon, the twin Succubi, hold the front line against the melee prowess of the White Scars, moving at speeds that put even their bikes to shame. The entire battle being overseen by Archon Daviar, the tactical genius who prevents the battle from drawing to close to their prise. The battle is a permeant stalemate, neither side making progress but neither side falling back, as it has been and will be for any years to come.

I have my own little group. They're called the Imperial Centarion Guard. Yes centurion is spelled wrong but it's staying. The ICG has their own sector of stars and planets called the Centarion Star cluster. The cluster has about 98.5 million stars. The ICG has made advancements spanning tens of thousands of years before man step foot on Terra. With heavily advanced A.I., the ICG has battles on scales unimaginable by a simple man, and yet they suffer greatly under the constant swarms of tyranids. The ICG has called to the Emperor for assistance, but there where no responses. The ICG is losing many worlds and billions of men every single hour. The ICG has used atomic bombs, thermonuclear bombs, even K-Class extinction event weapons, but they keep coming stronger and faster every time. The Imperial Centarion Navy has sent out A-75 Super Carriers. These behemoths reach up to a minimum of 15 miles long and a maximum of 45 miles long. The carriers have been sent to the nearest galaxy, the Milky Way. The ICG is falling, growing weaker by the second as titan after titan crumble like buildings after terrorist attacks. The combat A.I. take heavy inspiration from Generation Zero's tanks and hunters. The C-45 is a mix between the Gem Zero hunter and the CoD Infinite Warfare mech that you can play with on multiplayer. The D-45 is a mix between the Gen Zero tank and the Russian T-72 tank. These are the main front line fighters. If those fail the ICG will enforce the ICN's B-45 and B-50 star ships. If those somehow fail, F-45 heavy artillery loaded with incendiary cluster bombs, biological disease shells and biochemical gas shells. If those aren't enough, the hundreds of trillions of men and tanks will raid the battlefield. These tanks are tracked monsters equipped with a 250mm main gun, 20 75mm HMGs on all sides, 4 90mm AA air burst cannons and the carry capacity for 50 Guardsmen. That is just an MBT. The heavy tanks are equipped with a 450mm main gun, 18 side mounted 90mm HMGs, 6 120mm AA incendiary air burst cannons and the carry capacity for 70 Guardsmen. That's all unless you want more. Just comment. I ain't extending this further.

i have been meaning to write up the lore for my hektarian 903rd and the hektari 3 pdf whom are merged into them after a war with the orks on hektari 3. the hektarian 903rd are my longest running army conversion project that first started as hektarian street fighters around 2014 but quickly got changed over into being a guard regiment in their own right though i later realised that if i wanted to be able to reasonably field an army of them that i would need to have more than just guardsmen converted from the chaos cultist with gasmask and uniform (it has an autopistol and spiky club) with cadian arms and the spiky gear they being removed (as it is unworthy of their loyalty to the emperor) because the sheer cost of an army of them was prohibitive so i eventually added in the 903rd to the story who take standard cadians with the exception of their heads which are pickle prick with gasmask helms from victoria miniatures. sadly gw's discontinuation of the dark vengance era cultists is forcing me to either look to casts of the models or third party for additional reinforcements beyond the 40 foot sloggers i have for pdf element though that is leading me to using a mix of either Rausenburg Siege Corps or Tannenburg Fusiliers models from victoria miniatures (I already have some Rausenburg models thanks to my getting the bfg sledgehammer kit and getting sent a replacement squad due to warped parts) at some point I will do a lore series on my guard regiment maybe even on my youtube channel though before that i will need to get those models to look good on camera

These are the guys plumbing the cold void of space for all the weird shit that'll never make the pages of a codex or battle report. To Boldly Go, and all that. Part astrological cartographer, part historian, part forensic scientist. Cold. Unfeeling. Historic. And female names work better when they roll off the tongue with exotic S's and X's. It's trite but it works for a reason. Delphine Sagitarri. Scarletti Opus. Xanthia. Iona Verne. Sarissa Juno. Tyra Serpentis. Domenica-Philomena Andromeda. An inquisitor's name is as short or long as they please, but they all convey weight of authority and power.

There's a lot of Heresy-era stuff in there (Contemptor Dreadnought, Calth chaplain as the Chaos lord, Justaerin terminators and Forge World upgrades and transfers for the standard troops), but also some stuff from the 40k CSM range (metal sorcerer, resin Plague Marines and modern CSM bodies) to represent the remnants of a true Traitor Legion rather than the strange Legion/renegade mashup the CSM range usually is these days.

Since like, either '09 or '08, I began writing my long-running 40k homebrew fanfic continuity, Secret War. I used the excellent lore from the Dark Heresy P&P RPG as a springboard, basing it in DH's Calixis Sector. The Rogue Trader campaign I just put on hiatus (one of my players was getting a bit too much into the game, and I was finding her intensity a little hard to handle with my anxiety) is a distant sequel set one hundred years after the current story and another DH campaign I ran before, which I began in like 2010. I am so proud of the stories, especially the first one, which is first person and is a real character-driven experience. My main character Attelus Kaltos begins as a no-name, low-down, brainwashed mercenary with no purpose to finding his meaning and discovering his true self. I wanted to make a mini of him for a long time, I even got the wood elf lord with a great weapon to convert into him, but I couldn't be bothered. But then I found out about Hero Forge and got one version which wasn't so good, but earlier this year, I ordered another by the Emperor who ever designed his STL file; they knocked it out of the park because it was awesome! He was a joy to paint, unlike the other HF minis I'd gotten, which were a bit harder to pain than the GW ones I'm used to. I also found out someone named their child after Attelus! Which took me aback, and at first, I thought it was grox shit, but the more I chatted with the guy, the more I thought it was legit. Never in my years of writing did I ever think someone would name their child after one of my characters. Frig it! I'll throw the synopsis and link down here. Sorry about the shameless self-promotion, but I gotta lol. Secret War After his organization is hired to hunt down an influential ganger on the Hive world, Omnartus. Attelus Kaltos is embroiled deeper into the complex world of the Assassin. This is the job which will change him, for better or for worse, forever more. www.fanfiction.net/s/5967026/1/Secret-War-Warhammer-40-000

On the subject of homebrew lore, there is a kitbash I've been thinking of that anyone here is free to steal: So, the 2nd and 11th legions canonically have no lore because the Imperium lost all the records of the 2nd and destroyed all the records of the 11th. My homebrew: the Inquisition destroyed the records of the 11th because they were made of abhumans, and they didn't want to admit that the Emperor didn't hate abhumans. So, you have Beastmen marines, Ogryn terminators, and ratling scouts. Maybe throw some Afriel Strain characters in there. This would probably make the most sense as Chaos Space Marines, but it's possible that they didn't get excommunicated just because doing so would require admitting they exist, so running them as loyalists could work too. If you run them as loyalists, your Ogryn Marines could be your counts-as Primaris instead of being relegated to just Terminators. If you run them as Chaos, you could have Gland Warriors be some Plague Marines.

They were founded by a single grot who was the lone survivor of a Waaagh that was destroyed by the Ultra Marines. Being a particularly smart Grot, he reasoned that Mork had gotten confused because the "OOltramahreenz" were more blue and more shine than the Orks, and So he Mork had blessed them instead. This grot had seen how the Chaplin had prayed and been granted power, and as he tended to the spores of his future army, he said prayers and sang hyms to Mork. Mork of course heard absolutely none of this as he was too busy fighting with Gork, but the little grot was noticed by Tzeench, and the Lord of Change saw fit to "intervene" in order to "bring change" to the situation. He summoned, from Sigmar's realms, a fully grown, but simple minded Orruk. The Orruk, quite to the grots convenience, lost both of his hands in the transmission. The Grot took this opportunity and, with the help of a newly grown mech boy, fixed the weapons of a fallen killa kan to the Orruk. The grot rode attop that Orruk from that day forth. The Orruk did absolutely as the grot said (for he trusted no one else in this realm, and the grot fed him). From atop the back of this steed he preached, his doctrine of Mork; of being the shiniest and the bluest, of singing and praying for miracles, and of faith. The Grot preached that " the harder they have faith, that the harder mork will help them" and in so doing, has taken their latent psychic ability to unseen heights. As the Ork warband grew in size, and depleted the scrap from the battlefield upon which they spawned, they prayed. They said their orky prayers and sang their orky hymns, asking for the best fights, and the biggest dakka, and the shiniest scrap. Mork heard them now, but was still too busy fighting Gork to care. Tzneech heard them as well, and saw a possibility. Passing the now smoldering planet, a Dark Mechanicus Vessel experienced a sudden emergency malfunction and was forced to crash land. Happening upon the vessel first (as he had seen it falling and not just heard the crash) the Grot found a full unit of Skitarii rangers, disconnected from their Magos, and in critical repair. The Grot decided they weren't just scrap, but a sign from Mork. He had the Mech boys (a few dozen now) fit the "shiney humee mechs" out with standard ork geer, but none of it worked. Thinking quickly, the grot tossed a blue, paint squig onto the Skitarii Commanders Cloak. Instantly, his powa klaw lifted to life, and they rejected to Machine God, and Embraced the power of Mork.

Some of the minor things Ive done with my Black Templars (and doing more so now with new models) is giving their weapons/some accents purple. Mostly as a way of honoring the Shadow Wolves chapter that was mentioned in the Helsreach novels, but also kind of because if I had known about that chapter before collecting, I probably would have started with them. I still want to do a tactical squad with a super geared up sergeant, heavy marine, and special weapon marine in the Shadow Wolves colors (which would just run as a BT tac squad if i ever fielded them). It also kind of helps explain away some of the wolfy bits in my army from using Space Wolf sprues that were left over from my brothers collection. In general my BTs are also happy to be shooty, with some having double pistols, and a good amount of bolters and heavy weapons/dev squads. Even made a company veteran with a Heavy Bolter and Storm Shield. Some of my guys just love shootin. Theyre also a non religious/emp isnt a literal god crusade force since when I started that wasnt the up front in your face 100% aspect of the chapter that still kinda yucks my yums seeing it after getting back into the hobby. For Tau Ive made them a custom sept, and have a small squad I call Black Tauplar. Fire warriors with black/white/red, their shas'ui is a tau torso, legs, and head with space marine arms/shoulders with the pulse rifle, and I made a custome ethereal with a Black Templar sheathed sword as his melee staff thing. Im planning to also collect some Sisters eventually (I think im gonna go with a purple as their main armor and then either red for their cloaks/capes and maybe some light blue accents or maybe orange). And then I also want to sprinkle some alpha legion into my BT force or make a squad/small force of loyalist Alpha Legion and also loyalist Luna Wolves.

🐺 Kill Team Update🐺 All 5 members of the kill team are coming together. Is it a good kill team? Who knows but will they look sweet! Yes they will! Still got a bit of green stuff work to do and a few alterations to finish these guys off but we are coming close to paint. Oh and heads yes they will have them! 😉 Going to do a grimdark scheme inspired by @spenspainting Been looking into the lore and building something that fits.. I still need to add some Death Watch pauldrons to the pack and work on some green stuff pelts. But so far the idea behind Alpha Pack is.... This is my Space Wolves Kill team Alpha Pack! All have served as veteran death watch members before returning to the brotherhood. Their time as death watch has taught them new skills and they do not conform to traditional wolves tactics, they are happy to use specialist weapons shunned by lesser brothers. Instead of becoming Long Fangs these guys were selected to join Alpha Pack to carry out specialist kill team mission in far reaching areas of the warp. Now as members of the Alpha Pack they are used to carry out the most crucial of missions. All members are first born's and the Alpha Pack wear MKIV armour to honour the legacy of what they did during the Horus Heresy. Alpha Pack can be distinguished on the battlefield by the shield that they bare. This is a battle honour given to all members of Alpha Pack to represent the sacrifice and defence they have given to the Emperor.

Be nice to go my character redemptor units there a little into the tec development them self, you can go my upgrade captain with Sheilds and heavy incinerator with power blade and Storm bolter in the unit you get the character chart with a special flamer attack since it's chest flame weapon arm flame top missile fire and crusher flamer arm for a total off around 20W out it's a 1-3W half lost one above if above 8 count so like a servitor working on it...... In the next sector out side the gothic chaos sector!.😃😄😁😆😅5 Smile's. Chapter game 6 part story for the fan's entertainment 😁.

For my death guard boys I originally used a Lord Of Virulence as my warlord. As I got better at model building, I decided to build myself a custom Deamon Prince. I run it it as that LoV ascended. Now I'm thinking of making a "Counts as Mortarion," model and thinking how I can build up a bigger and more dangerous version of him.

I will say one thing about MCP. Yes, they are specific characters, but man do they all have so many alternative costumes thru the years, so you're not just beholden to the box but still have a huge amount of possibility if you're sticking with an "official" costume. (and yes, I know people can paint things however they wish, so even a hello kitty wolverine is valid; just commenting on if people wanted to stick with "official" marvel)

My Thousand Sons cult has been operating off a desert planet since nearly the start of their exile following the Heresy. As a result, we have mixed armor color in the mix as not everyone has gotten the memo to repaint their power armor: I’ve got 3 different schemes incorporated into the force and I feel like it’s justifiable because of the story. The basing keeps them uniform. Some are my take on pre-heresy colors (contemptor dreadnought, scarab box 1), some are post heresy standard issue Thousand Sons blue (rubric 1, scarab 2, my 3 heroes). Scheme 3, I’ve started dabbling with my own take on post heresy colors using contrast over metallic undercoat. And I’m in love. It sort of fits the post heresy blue but not quite. Kroxigar Scales contrast over the runelord brass metallic is just amazing. Use more contrasts on the gun and armor for the colors, with only standard paint coming out to touch up the headdress on the helmet and add a few other metallics to the guns - even contrast bases with a drybrush to make them pop. I’m absolutely buying a box of exalted sorcerers to make more captains so i can change out which color armor the captain is I think. And I’m thinking about a Leviathan dread from the Heresy to have a chipped up pre-heresy red from the old days still lumbering in. But now I have Magnus to do….

A totally awesome kill team! I love how you made the compassion between these Tempest scions and and knights and made full on, 1970's sci-fi metal men. I immediately am taken back to the movie Black Hole, which is as pulp sci-fi as you can get and I remember the sinister bad guy, his legions of servitor men, and the big droid with the singular visor, all on a ship on a doomed vogue into a black hole. To me it's just as iconic as star wars ever were, and it wasn't even that great a movie! XD Haven't started anything yet, but I am planning to make alternations to a Star Wars Legion faction called the Shadow Collective to make a Warband of pirates, substituting some models from various ranges to make a rag-tag band of scum and villainy, lead by an imposing man with a visor. Some call him Cobra Commander, but few are willing to utter CobraBane Talon in good company lest he arrives on the edge of civilised space ahead of his raiding band. His blue visor gleams atop a sea of red rags...

I’m currently working on a KT of chaos beastmen who are counts as CSM legionaries. Ops are: the Khorngor from blood bowl with an ork chainaxe as the butcher, the pestigor from blood bowl with 2 plague swords from the death guard as the shrivetalon, the slaangor from AOS with a CSM bolt pistol as the anointed, the tzaangor shaman as the balefire acolyte, the gor standard bearer from AOS with a CSM chainsword as the icon bearer, and the bestigor from the spire tyrant kit with a plasma pistol as the aspiring champion. Basically everyone’s kitted out for melee, and while I can’t legally run the 4 unique gors with their god’s mark in the rules, I will absolutely do that if my opponent’s okay with it. I’m also working on a loyalist counter-part of gors kitbashed with catachans to make up a vet guard kill team. I have a half thought-out backstory for how the two teams intersect and names for everyone as well.

Still working on the lore details but I'm currently building a Legionaries team & a Blooded team entirely (apart from guns of course) out of the Age of Sigmar Slaanesh range. I want this warband to represent the aspects of Slaanesh that 40k doesn't touch on as often but Age of Sigmar embraces; things like vanity & gluttony, artists, dancers & musicians who push their art to lethal levels etc.

My space marine chapter, the Space Panthers are supposedly a second founding chapter of forgotten origins, but actually they’re a bunch a deserters from a bunch of different chapters who were being shipped to a prison world by Grey Knights when their ship was attacked by a Necron force. Battle, crash, battle and then the prisoners realise all the guards were dead. They find a dead White Panther marine and decide to repaint their armour in a similar way and become the Space Panthers. (All of this came from a Monsters In My Pocket ‘Winged Panther’ toy on my desk.) So now they go through the galaxy trying their best not to draw attention and pretending like they’re not a bunch of ragtag fools who mostly hate each other (key members of the team are Dark Angels and Space Wolves). Think the Deathwatch, but idiots.

I am painting my Thousand Sons to match my brothers Grey Knights. They are The Sons of Arvida. A small group of Thousand Sons who were off world on a mission during the fall of Prospero. Left isolated and adrift in the far reaches of the galaxy, they received a psychic message through the warp from their father, whom they presumed to be dead. He told them to wait for his return. After a thousand year of waiting on a dead world, they were met by a figure who addressed himself as Janus. They could sense that this man was Magnus, or at least part of him. The product of Nobel Shard of Magnus fusing with Revuel Arvida, the first Grandmaster of the Grey Knights. These loyalist Thousand Sons later fell victim to the Rubric of Ahriman, but the sorcerers guiding them continued to follow Janus, as a closely kept secret of the Grey Knights, used for their psychic prowess and knowledge of the arcane.

Lore's always come first for me - to the point that it's kind of the reason I drifted out of the hobby back in the day, I'd gone off on so many tangents that I was inventing backstories for characters who weren't even part of any army I collected, or devoting 150k words to a Sister of Battle - not an Order, a single Sister. No regrets though (I mean, apart from much of it being the kind of cliché-driven nonsense you turn out when you're young and think every idea is the best one ever - to give you some idea, I *started* with female marines and just got more self-indulgent from there). Still haven't learned my lesson, my current Chaos warband is one I invented back then just to give my Craftworld leader an archnemesis (slash awkward crush).

I have like about 60 pages of custom lore across all my armies, like my tau are purple and red, red because farsight, and purple armor with black clothes because the sky on their planet is overloaded with hydrogen and its always raining, giving off a perpetually purple-hued dark sky, similar to something that can happen on earth during hurricane season (there is a lot more to their lore specifically [most developed] but I don't want to fill this post with nothing but their lore forever). My Night Lords company, the 137th, were originally taken pre-great crusade from the prisons under the northern pole of terra (the last place with ice) and so they are called the "ice wraiths" specifically deployed in places with inclement weather. Why did I come up with that? Well, i just think night lords look so good on ice bases, I couldn't not do that with mine, and formed the lore around the fact that I simply wanted ice bases. So I definitely agree that homemade lore just makes things better in the building and painting part of your armies.

Still in the process of fleshing it out but custom space marine chapter I have the models also. Bestia Venatores Battle barge flagship: modicum draconem Chapter master: Cato Beatrix Captain: Ceres Sextus Lieutenant: Maximiel Gorion Masters of Sanctity Chaplain: Vitus Goremus Chief Apothecary: Kix Aurelius Chief Librarian: Techmarine: Casteos Thon Ancient: Julius Trix Assault intercessors hammer Sgt: Malleo Tempore Inquisitor: Gallius Lowrar Dreadnaught: Imperatoriae Saxum Dreadnaught: Fulcrum Petram Warcry: let the Emperors light purge the xenos. Successors of the ultramarines. Founded in 999.M41 ultima founding. Fleet based never had a planet. Emperor is a God. Tith from the Ultramar Galaxy. Have a ship for aspirants to live and train on. Final test for aspirants is to kill a xenos in single combat. Not codex complient as numbers fluctuate and company’s work more independent on a fleet based level responding as and when needed relying little on the overall chapter to make decisions. Each fleeting having the men and armour it needs to fight off any foe. Main enemy are xenos and chaos demons. Heavy use of close combat used. The majority of marines are respectful and will actively save human life mainly for combat members even Militia as anyone fighting for the emperor is an ally. Company colours: 1st: orange 2nd: green 3rd: black 4th: blue 5th: white 6th: brown 7th: purple 8th: yellow 9th: gold 10th: red Many of the chapters relics have been brought with the oldest of the chapters members from their time as ultramarines which have since been passed onto new wielders keeping there connection to their founding chapter strong. Gene seed flaw: first encountered after Cato and a small group of marines were subject to a tyranid gas attack causing there eyes to turn all white and having a subtle purple glow to them making low light and stealth missions nearly impossible but also gives many of the marines a unique ability to sense the hive mind of the Tyranids helping to track down the presence of tyranid or genesteller cult actively but not a precise location more of a planetary system. Will take weapons and resources from other chapters to help keep them going as being constantly on the move and hunting it’s can be many years before they get a chance to resupply and get new marines. Due to this they have formed a strong working relasonship with both Astra millaterum and imperial navy. Cato Beatrix a lieutenant in the 7th company of the ultramarines during the battle of Macragge who during the battle showed a great ability in killing tyrianids and later on was selected to serve a tour with the deathwatch, whist on tour with the deathwatch he earned great respect and honour for saving many of his battle brothers by slaying a Hive tyrant as well as many other feats of heroism and for this when his tour was over instead of being sent back to join his ultramarine brothers he was offered the chance to lead his own chapter of marines during the Ultima founding he accepted and crossed the primaris rubicon to make his new brothers feel more at ease he chose to bring marines he knew from the deathwatch and ultramarines to found the chapter to make the transition much easier. Many of the original marines who founded the chapter along with Cato decided not to cross the rubicon thinking the risk to high and remained in there original form leaving there armour battle scared to show the years of war giving the newer members of the chapter somthing to aspire to. The bestia venatores similarly to the space wolves do not replace dead members of their squads often being taken down to a single marine if this happens often the marine will be promoted to the ranks of a lieutenant or will join other solo marines to form a veteran ghost squad. Major campaigns. Sacrifice of the vanguard. The 42nd vanguard fleet led by fleet commander Varis Ooterband and Captain Gaius Tiberius were investigating signs of a tyranid presents near the planet of Morwo Seven to find a possibly fragmented or scout detachment of hive fleet Umbral realising they were hugely outnumbered but action needed to be taken they decided to leave details of what was found they left a transmission beacon on a small asteroid so when it was found a reaction could be taken knowing that all the men would be killed in the coming conflict, the initial attack was ship bombardment hoping to draw the Tyranids into a flight with them and away from Morwo Seven and the moon Corns 7B where many of the marines had set up a defensive base. The destruction of flagship Terra happen when a barrage of Tyranid weaponry hit in the main engine of the battle-barge setting of a series of explosions triggering a massive blast destroying the ship and several of the surrounding vessels leaving only the sister ships of Norma Familia and Katsura. Several days after the main fleet was destroyed the first waves of the Tyanids landed on the moon growing in intestataty and numbers many of the marines fell in the coming days and the remaining had set up a final stand hoping to delay the assault for as long as possible as they planned a glassing of the moon from the remaining ships in orbit, finally the time to act was at hand the Norma Familia and the Katsura armed all remaining missiles and set of in opposite way the Katsura towards Corns B7 and the Norma Familia headed towards the presumed flagship of the Tyranids hoping for a massive blow destroying both the hive mind of the fleet and the moon itself killing all remaining members of Vangaurd fleet 42. Many years later when on a reconnaissance mission to Morwo Seven the missing moon and the Transmission beacon were decovered and what the men of the Vanguard fleet had Sacrificed to stop hive fleet Umbral.

I’m currently making an adeptus mechanicus themed Phobos marine killteam. Basically the admech have been kidnapping a bunch of the Astartes who they would otherwise have trained to be techmarines. They’ve obviously been indoctrinated in all the same ways you’d expect the admech so I’ve removed most of the imperial iconography in place of some admech transfers. Kinda gave me the freedom to think about how the admech would experiment with the astartes if they had that control not just by adding bionics and experimental weaponry but also trying to kitbash a fem-marine for one of the marines. Ngl, I started by trying to base a killteam off of the insurrection from Red vs Blue but I’ve enjoyed trying to give them all lore justifications.

Currently working on some Reivers for them and then I'll probably get the new Imperial Breachers

A warband of Chaos Space Marines who venerate their Primarch Fulgrim and their belief in perfection to the point that Slaanesh has rewarded them accordingly. Donning pristine white armor with gold and silver accents, the warriors stride onto the battlefield in perfect formations. The dirt, muck, blood and grime unable to contact them. Almost every marine displays some favor from Slaanesh, a perfected limb, a perfected visage or even perfect wings for demonstrating their perfected art of war. Sonic weapons blast across the fields, their audience falling to their knees knowing they will never hear such beautiful orchestral sounds ever again and preferring death to that living hell.

The recent batch of new citadel contrast paints (about 5ish of them) let me successfully draft a proof of concept of taking death guard plague Marines and making them look like death knights from WoW. Stormfiend for that dark blue armor, grey knights steel for armor trim, luxion purple for cloth, Sigismund burgundy for tentacles, briar queen chill for faces and as a shade for the armor trim, and pylar glacier for making any horns or melee plague weapons look like they were made of ice, or at least an icy-looking weapon enchantment. Have yet to come up with usable lore for such a theme for a death guard army, but that'll be part of the process along the way.

I got into painting Warhammer a bit over a month ago and am slowly building up an army to play. I'm a huge fan of tanks and the history of both World Wars so I already knew I wanted to build a Death Korps of Krieg army. But I also like adding markings or crew-given vehicle names and jokes to vehicles (which the normal Death Korps are too emotionally void to do) So I decided that my Death Korps regiment would be all veterans of multiple campaigns, which throughout the many years interacting with other more human regiments and guard, have come to develop a sense of humor and give each other names instead of serial numbers. Been naming every single infantryman and got my friends to each name their own vehicle and vehicle commander, probs one of the best months I've ever had in my life.

My imp guard lore that I have in my head. I don’t do names all to well. But they are basically a imp guard sister force. They are from a shrine world, where they see tought to be religious zealots and the best way to show there undying faith for the emperor is to join his countless armies and fight and die for him. I have a scheme made already. Red fatigues with bone armor. (Different ranks will be shown with different colored armor. Like black for higher (maybe)). This isn’t beyond the couple test models cause I need to get sister of battle bits and other imperial iconography to plaster every where. Purity seals and other similar things.

I recently built up a Tau killteam using the basic fire warrior kit as I bought the start collecting before the codex released and didn't know what to do with them, not wanting to build a Tau force after all (still haven't built the guard army that I've wanted to since I started last year) I said screw it, they'll be a killteam. The idea I have of them is they're "reverse pathfinders" a small force of Tau left behind enemy lines as a planet is being overrun by Orks and the imperium who send out their remaining soldiers in small teams in order to create a safe route back to Tau space and hopefully escape with the remaining Tau forces. As I wanted them to be a bit more of a self sustaining force behind enemy lines I've decked them out in equipment (they're using everything that was left over as theirs no point wasting it) and even gave them some greenstuff ponchos and scarves. I still haven't painted them as I haven't decided on a scheme/basing scheme but I want to really "battle damage" them up before I do. They've even got a few drone pieces tacked onto them as makeshift armour and the shas'ui (shas'la) is wearing a drones cover plate as a hat.

200% agree. The creative aspect is what drew me towards the hobby in the first place so it would be a surprise to noone that out all my 10000 points of various armies there are very few models that aren't converted in some shape or form. As you said it makes it way more fun and interesting if you are painting and playing with midels that are 100% yours. Never was a big fan of homebrew lore tho l've seen way to much cringe and forced edgyness to take any form of it serious, the way l do it is l take a part of (preferably more obscure) existing lore l like and build and expand on it with my projects. Great idea anyways l would welcome it a lot if more people had this sorta mindset but with GW trying actively to push creativity away from their games and miniatures l think we're in a pretty bad spot right now.

Just started a T'au army. No name yet, but it's a small sept descended from Bor'Kan who's ethereal has gone rogue, and wants to try and get the Greater Good going without the need for all the fucked up things the ethereals tend to do. Basically T'au as they were in 3rd, where they're just trying to make the Galaxy a better place. These guys aren't directly rebelling, so the Empire isn't trying to destroy them, but they do things *very* differently than the regular Tau do. For example, the caste system is looser, less of a heirarchy and more just different paths one can take. However, every member who wishes to advance themselves to leadership positions must serve in the other castes for at least a year, to get a better idea of how each are structured and providing much more diversity of thought

The Votann of "the Slayers" (a little on the nose, but who cares) sends new Hearthkyn out with a list of grudges they must make right, written all on their armor so they can't forget the shame they carry. Whenever the team would win a narrative mission, I'd strike one out on their armor and retire the team whenever I felt they had completed their mission.

I have a few custom kill teams and armies like this. One of them are the Infected Consorts, a custom warband of chaos marines. Their deal is they used to be a loyal fleet based chapter until their gelar fields were sabotaged, resulting in almost the entire chapter either dying or being infected by a chaotic disease that mutated their bodies. When the Inquisition only offered the survivors death they turned traitor and fled into the warp, vowing to bring death to the imperium that betrayed them. I build them like regular CSMs except with a lot of Plague Marine bits to emphasize their mutations. Also I paint them yellow because its not a color you see very often on chaos stuff.

The Skitarii Vanguard helmets look like salets. Imho that fits the Rennaisance/Conquistador style of the Scions rather well indeed!

I wonder if it's an issue with Malifaux. You play already existing characters and their minions. For me it's not a problem, but those looking for self made lore it might be a deterrent.

Because I am poor, I get alot of old second hand space marine models. Like classic 2nd edition stuff like the marine with the gun in front of his body. So I say that my space wolves were cut off by a warp storm and had to fend for themselfs for hundreds of years before a battalion of primiris marines lead by Bjorn himself came to rescue them. So all my old models are being painted up with rust and paint chips and my primiris are all shiny and new looking.

Sure, why not. My T'au killteam are the remains of a cadre that couldn't get back to a rendezvous point. They've been doing their best to keep it all together. While they still believe in the ideology of the greater good, their faith in the Etherals has been shaken and so they bear red strips of cloth tied to their armor as marks of solidarity with the Farsight Enclave and as quiet reminders of the hope they can one day find themselves reforged under the more enlightened and egalitarian ideals of O'Shovah. Not much in the way of conversion save for some minor greenstuff work, but I plan on redoing the team with the new pathfinder kit and giving them grungier and more beat up looking armor with the same little red banners.

My Kroot were stranded / left behind on a barren junk planet. They incorporate all matters of dumped junk into their armor. I paint it rusty to make it all whole. Some have replaced lost limbs with what they found. Instead of knarloc riders they will ride metal contraptions they put together (i don't know this is lore friendly but mine had to adapt). That is the theme but will have to flesh it out more once the new kroot models hit.

They're a bit tall to fit 100%, but I painted up a squad of ARC troopers from Legion to use for Tempestus.

I do this with every army I own, it just makes it far more interesting for me thinking up lore. Especially for chaos stuff because you can go a bit wild.

It's probably the most fun thing, talking to people about their army and what makes it special to them. They'll often point to an innocuous looking model, something that looks like your standard rank and file troop with a bit of kitbash done to it and point out its particularities and how it fits with their army's lore. Or they'll talk about the process of kitbashing that big centerpiece model they've built and the challenges they faced.
