We have them on the central coast of California. Look for relatively moist areas, in partial shade. Be careful, the buggers ..uh...sting!

That is interesting and useful - I also am trying bread yeast ( and I also added in other plants, goosegrass, dandelion, toast wild hazelnuts . . .) I did not add really any extra water, though I used maybe 3kg of plant material, for around ten litres ( two UK gallons, 2.65 US gallons ) and did more much more yeast. Was thinking maybe the more plant material ratio, the denser the liquid, more yeast might be good - but we'll see. Any ideas ?

Hi, this looks great, luckily we have a lot of nettles here in the uk, so definitely worth a try, one question have you got to add the cream of tartar ? Also once bottled how long do you leave it then till it is ready to drink please ? 👍💕

Do you think you could use nettles for soda water flavoring?
@HappyHomestead
6 жыл бұрын
I don't see why not! James says: "It's not alcoholic so it's an uncharted territory for me!" :D haha, Then he adds that you would boil a pint glass of nettles with 1/2 of water to extract the liquid (if you add them straight to the drink, they may still sting you!) and then add soda water to that. . . Have a go, nothing to loose by experimenting and you may just discover something really amazing! - Dee

Hahaha!! You need a full Elvish armour set, enchanted with the anti-sting and resist poison effects! . . . I think we've been playing too many RPGs lately, lol - but in all reality - you do need a good pair of GAUNTLETS (or. . . you know - gardening gloves!!!) xx - Dee

Have to try this. Found a wonderful patch of nettles some days agp. I will use Lallmand KVEIK ale yeast, and use regular nutrition to support it instead of cream of tartar. I will also let it ferment dry, and bulk prime it as a lager beer to get it clear and fizzy :-) Thanks for posting !

Don't use bread yeast for wine, you will find it brews completely dry too quickly. Brewers told me it would only make alc of 6% max which is too sweet. But my experience was it was way too dry too fast.. :)

Beer? Where's the malt? I think this is a wine though substituting nettles for flavouring hops could be interesting.

Nettle beer is actually a country wine. So is beer, it's a country grass wine.

The nettle beer we bought in Wales 60 years ago was dsrker , like coca cola. Never found a recipe for it. Bread yeast will make it taste dry no matter how much sugar you use, it just eats it up. I did that for ginger beer, it was not very good. A natural starter is the way to go, try a ginger bug instead of yeast.

This made me giggle. You are so messy i would hunt you out of my kitchen, in fact my whole house lmaro. My wee mammy was the maker, myself and my brother were the hunter gatherers. She made elderberry wine and everything in her old fashioned bread bin {{ green n yellow, yeah that type loll }}. When she made wine in it she would place slices of bread on top to collect the scummy froth that built up. Thanks for the wonderful memories and i hope you enjoyed your beer. Btw, hope your phone/camera was ok :/
