I love diy instruments. You can likely get rid of the buzz by working on your bridge a bit. Sharpen it to a point so the string doesn't lay flat across it, and also cut out the middle of it underneath so it only touches the tub on the two sides like a bracket shape if you rotate it 90° clockwise: [

Good job! To get rid of The buzz bevel the top of the bridge, so it's pointy from the side 🏠 like the roof of a house has a bevel, you can even file a little notch for the string to sit in. When it's flat across it sounds like a sitar, they sound that way because their bridges are flat on top.

Hello Phoebe good thinking you know what they say about necessity😎. Such bass instruments have a long history in many genres of music. Have you ever heard of a tea chest bass? It's similar in construction but uses a thin wooden tea chest cube about 2 feet square on each side with a flat wooden neck on one side, innovators added a hinged handle at the top of the neck so the string tension could be adjusted. They were very popular among early Australian country bands.🌻

Cool! I made myself a washtub bass in a former life, and had a washboard too ... just add enthusiasm and you've got music. Thinning the top of the bridge and giving it feet would probably get rid of the rattle (informed guess).

Well never mind buzz, it's just character and tells a story. And I'm planning a DIY Banjo. I have 2 banjo's a 5 string (called chemo - did I spell it right oh well ) as all proceeds went for Cancer research but I gave more, just right . To try to beat it, it's OK sounding but aesthetically could be better. I love it as its therapeutic to me too. I have Krusty (after the Simpson clown) as I always wanted a 4 string tenor (I'm from Ireland) I befriended a kids clown who worked with sick kids I'm hospital worker you see. The clown wanted a 5 string so I swapped him hence Rusty. So they all have a tale. Loving it Noel ☘️

You newly constructed wash tub bass is both practical & useful, Phoebe. And if Galena finds it approachable, who am I to reproach it. Now all you need is a jug & a washboard & a pair of spoons & a maybe a saw for extra measure & you can form your very own washboard band. Who's your camera operator? Mom? Be Well.

Nice camera-work! I am impressed that damping the pan stops the buzz: I would have thought that was solely a property of the string. From its shallowness and lack of handles, I suspect that this was made as a dishpan, not a washtub-i.e., for washing dishes, not laundry.

Love it! And your videos - thank you!! As a builder of many instruments from found materials (including a wood-top banjo to learn clawhammer with), if you want to improve the sound of your base I would recommend attention on the bridge - taper it on the string side to transmit and amplify as much of the string vibration to the tub as you can.

I made a similar bass. The differences are:1. I used a 2"x2"x4' redwood fence pole, 2. Instead of a wash tub, I used an empty Christmas popcorn tin, 3. I have two stings, and they are from an electric bass guitar, and 4. I used old bass guitar tuners. It sounds good, with less buzz but is far quieter.

Violin (etc.) bridges are made from maple wood because it's best for transferring string vibration to the instrument. If you can find a piece of maple and make a new bridge it would likely improve the sound. Tip - place some sand paper over the bridge position and use this to transfer the pan shape to the bottom of the new bridge.

Hey that's awesome! It reminds me of the time, many many years ago, where in school a teacher told us to bring an instrument for the next class and I made my own tambourine! I grabbed a tin canister and cut it near the base, I drilled some old coins at the center and tied them with steel wire around the tin base, was it a good looking solution? Perhaps not, but it did its function all the same and was very fun to make... Your creation reminded me of simpler times, Phoebe... Thank you very much! Cheers!

Awesome instrument!! Looking forward to hearing it properly. Looks like a half-decent weapon, as well :) If you want to improve the sound, another kind of string might do a lot for a little... a stretchy string will lose its tuning quickly, and a light one will not press sufficiently on the bridge to make the body vibrate much. Maybe a cello string, if it's long enough and with a suitable gauge?
@MrJRW1
