I decided to do a little experiment by building my own homemade paper shotgun shell hulls and trying to reload them. I'll do a video of me test firing these at the gun range later.
Federal still loads paper shotshells. Forget the box label but it might be Gold Medal or something like that. Warm the brass with a small torch. Should be warm enough that you can't hold it. Then simply put pliers on the brass and the hull mouth and pull apart. If they don't pull apart relatively easily, warm the brass more. Paper hulls are more "delicate" than brass, but not that much. Properly constructed paper hulls can be reloaded an average of 5 times. Plastic (depending on brand) anything from 6 to 12 times. And yes, properly constructed paper hulls can be star crimped (6 point), but roll crimping them is both easier and allows more reloads. But I close by giving you a hearty pat on the back, and compliment your efforts. Keep trying and keep everyone posted. Great!!!! And yes, a video showing how you got there would be really good. The swelling from moisture didn't occur rapidly. It took a long time in extremely wet conditions, but as you mentioned, swelling from wet conditions did occur.

Practice does make perfect, and roll crimp is the way to go with paper hulls - period correct too. Sure, they might be inferior to factory made, but in a SHTF, if commercial products weren't available, then they would do the job in a pinch. Any hull is better than no hull.

Hi, that was cool mate. It reminded me of the first episode of the A-team the pirate with the wooden leg. ▶️Lincrusta◀️You don't have to emboss the paper as part of the process. It's a very rigid type of card. You can modify the process by using harder glues.
@Deorse
4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that;s a good idea. I tried rolling some out of news paper, I changed the glue to an exterior-grade carpenter's glue. The news paper and carpenter's glue works really well, I can get more plies and a more tightly packed cylinder resulting in a 50% more rigid paper cylinder. My problems is that I modified my sizing dowel too much that the inner diameter of the shotgun shell is too tight and too narrow to accept a normal wad and shot cup without destroying the shell, so I have to make a new custom-size sizing dowel. That was a good idea on your part to suggest using a harder glue, it does make a noticeable difference, but I still need to add some sort of water proofing material like wax to the exterior of the shell to make it more water resistant. One of the issues of paper shotgun shells from years past especially during use in the trench warfare of WWI is that if paper shells got wet or were exposed to extreme moister for too long of periods of time that they would swell up and be completely unusable, resulting in troops carrying trench shotguns to not be able cycle or chamber them in their trench shotguns and those were the paper shells treated with wax. That's why in WWI that troops started getting issued all brass shotgun shells mid-war. This is why it is important that I try to come up with a way to treat my shells with either some kind of wax or varnish, because an untreated shell is extremely vulnerable to even a minuscule amount of moister or humidity.

@@Deorse. Have a look at the 1853 Enfield cartridge. This is a paper tube which has powder and round in it with beef or pig fat to keep the damp out. Or try "fixing wax" I think if you use varnish it may scrap off and gum up the shotgun. Actually come to think of it. If you're using modern chemical and solvent based products that should help keep it dry to.
@Deorse

Well with both of our ideas I was able to come up with a new and improved 25% more stout batch of shotgun shells. These shells are 25% more sturdy than the first batch and have 15% thinner walls than the first batch. This batch I made out of newspaper scraps glued together in 4 to 5 plies. I used your idea of using a harder glue, which was an exterior-grade carpenter's glue instead of Elmer's Glue-All glue and I successfully impregnated the paper shot shell tubes without them swelling up this time. These shells have smother feel, the wax took out some of the imperfections on the tubes such as some of the crinkles and some of the random bits of paper from the paper plies that didn't lay flat before lie flat now. Grant it, these shells still have quite a few imperfections for homemade paper shells, but this is to be expected. I still can not put a star crimp on these, even then the roll crimps with the cardboard overshot cards work just fine actually. I seen the 1853 Enfield cartridges, by the way. I think that I'm just going stick with either paraffin wax or use bees wax for my shotgun shells rather than use beef or pork lard. Lard goes rancid anyway. So far the wax has been working pretty fine for me anyway. Thanks for the advise that you've given me so far, it's helped out a lot in this last batch of shells. I'll be doing a shout out to you in my next video.

do you think it would be possible to make your own shotgun shell completely from the ground up, including the powder, primer, paper shell, and everything else? I've had this thought in my head for awhile now and I was thinking of experimenting with this idea next summer. I was planning to use ground up matchheads as both primer and powder and just sticking a bunch of nuts into a small homemade paper cartridge.
@Deorse

I have already practically made shotgun shells from scratch from "the ground up." I have made paper hulls from scratch, minus the brass end caps, those I salvage. Making your own black powder will not be an impossibly assuming that you get the ratios of the mixture correct and the purity of the ingredients is very high and very clean to start out. In the future I would love to scratch make my own black powder for use of making old fashioned shotgun shells. I do NOT recommend to anyone that they scratch make their own primers. Primers can be very dangerous and at best unstable or unreliable if improperly made. Just reloading/remanufacturing shotgun primers on their own is a pain in the ass because shotgun primers are absolutely not designed to be taken apart. Despite the fact that prices on everything has gone up, buying a 100 count box of shotgun shell primers is pretty cheap. I keep several thousand primers in my personal inventory. I won't mess with rebuilding existing spent shotgun shell primers. If you want to properly build shotgun shells from scratch 100% from the ground up, you'd pretty much need some specialized custom fabricated equipment, but why bother when you can go on to websites like Ballistic Products Inc and buy a 1000 count box of virgin clear plastic shotgun shells that have brand new primers for less than $100.

@@Deorse For me, being able to reload a primer would be more of a proof of concept than any safe or practical thing. Obviously, any thoughts of making a safe primer would be tossed out the window. Like I said, manufacturing a shell completely from scratch would mostly just be to prove a concept. I'm also curious about whether it would be possible to do without the brass end caps (just out of curiosity, of course). Thanks for replying to my comment, Deorse! I find your reloading videos fascinating. They've been very good material for me to learn from. I'm looking to get more in-depth with reloading and I've found some books on it.

So no it won't actually. Since before introduction of the first plastic shotgun shells introduced in the early 1960's, shotgun shell hulls used to always be made out of some sort of waxed stiffen hardened paper or paper board with either a brass or steel cap. I am actually going to make a custom-tailored video response, just for you, so stay tuned that will be coming out in about 2 hours.
