I admire your engineering skill. I built a go-cart from scratch for my kids. It involved a lot of welding with a mig that I bought on sale and then had to figure out what to do with it. A go kart seemed like the natural answer. I told them either go or stop because if you rev the engine a little bit without moving you will burn out the clutch. They burned out one clutch and another. (actually a stupid cousin) You won't have that problem with a boat. Cheers dude from Gordy

Dude. That is awesome. But you gotta admit, if there were no bugs to work out, the project would be boring. Troubleshooting is half the fun for any guerilla-engineer. The only advice I have to offer is to use a synthetic material for the base of your engine. Over time and use, the wood platform will warp and throw off the tolerances. My suggestion is a nylon cutting board from Wal-Mart.

Good job on your boat man. I like the design and I might have to copy some of it. In the middle of drawing one up to start making a new one. My son has a couple of them made out of aluminum and uses them in his work. He uses Honda engines and for my money you just can't beat a Honda motor. But that doesn't mean that there aren't others that I would use also. I like Kawasaki also. I'll be following you from now on to see how it works out. Good Luck!

Hey Ron! Awesome work on the jet boat. That chain drive will be more of a pain as it stretches and rusts. I would mount the engine a little forward and mount a small drive shaft with you joints, like on a car or truck. (Smaller diameter of coarse) let me know if you've had any success. I'm extremely interested in this build of yours. Again. Awesome work brother
@AmericanThunder
7 жыл бұрын
If you wanted to mount the motor inline with the shaft of the pump, you could just move the motor forward some and use a short driveshaft with u-joints to connect them and eliminate the chain drive entirely.
@ronaldhotboy

Thats a real good idea brother. Do you think the vibrations would be bad?

Just stumbled on to your boat build looking for info on my build and i love the hole jet propulsion set up you have. I'm taking a old pontoon boat and turning it into a tiny house on pontoons. People think i went off the deep end even talking about it. lol! But iv been trying to come up with something to move the thing through the water. I'm thinking the 10hp diesel engine from Harbor Freights but what ever engine i decide to use i need to figure out trans and propeller set up. Anyway good luck on your build and happy watering.

We're always going to have people that don't believe Fred, its up to us to keep our passions moving. That 10 horse should be enough to get you moving brother. It sounds like you can use one of those "shaft seals". Very interesting. Thanks. I have a similar motor (6 hp at 3500 rpm but I run it at 2500) running a centrifugal sprayer pump (capable of handling 6000 rpm) at that ratio. I run it with a B profile belt and 6" pulley driving a 4" pulley. I don't want to tell you what to do but in my opinion, running that chain on those sprockets at that rpm will heat and wear out the components. I get at least 200 hours over 10 years on a $5 belt while the pulleys haven't worn out in 25 years. The belt likely fails due to sun degradation, oil and chemicals on it and mistensioning. Anyway, maybe you find it works for you but if it turns out you're over heating the chain and especially that smaller sprocket, a belt/pulleys set up might be a cheap fix. Have fun out on the water.

I have built and modified several gx 160 honda clone engines in minibikes and once you remove the governor they make lots more than 6.5 horse, but you need to make sure you dont have the stamped valve rockers or the pushrods will pop out at high rpm, and the stock flywheel has to be replaced or it will explode and destroy the lil engine, modifying the engine to spin faster with good rockers, springs , billlet flywheel, and aftermarket slide carburator should put you in the 10 horse range on that motor, you could also play with gearing easyer with a v belt drive that has a multi groove primary pulley

hi ronald. I think the motor will put out 6.5 hp at around 3000 rpm. And, im guessing the pump probably be rated to consume 80hp at around 8000 rpm. the relationship of power consumed vs rpm grows exponentially as rpm increases. if you can imagine that graph you will see the pump probably consumes 6.5hp at around 3000 rpm. therefore I recomend trying a ratio of 1:1 using two sprockets the same size. this is how you will get the boat to go the fastest possible as you are using all the 6.5 hp available. If you gear it fast like you have, the engine will not be able to get to its full speed, instead, wont get past say 2000 rpm while making say 4hp, as the pump will require more hp than the motor can produce at that rpm to make it spin faster. hope this helps and keep up the good work

This things is awesome! I'd go to a go kart clutch and btw... you can get well over 6000rpm out of those engines. better exhaust, shave the head, and put a better carb on it and it'll rip. look at all the drag minis out there. some 5hp engines are pushing 20+ you can easily make your boat go good. I seen the video before, your gearing should be better now. make a little more power and add a couple thousand rpm and it'll go. Jet drives are inherently slow compared to prop drives. they require more power etc for the same speed. But you're on to something here. only other suggestion I have is maybe the gap on the impellor can be closed up a little. The tighter the seal there, the more push it will produce.

Take a link out in the chain and put a master Linked In and they make a little tool to take links out of chains.or or a chain tensioner just something with the roller on the end of it and a spring

u can try running #35 chain most racing gokarts run it and u can use a clutch system and still have a large drive sprocket and smaller driven and shave some weight off while doing so

If you are going direct drive use a universal joint to link the eng to the DRI shaft . To stabilize the eng mount make a trolly system . Hope this helps . When I say trolley, look up diy camera slider .

You don't want to add weight to get the jet into the water because that will take power to push.The problem is to much buoyancy . I think you need to end the transom where the jet unit bolts on to get rid of the buoyancy beside the unit , also you can build a extended box off the transom wide enough for the jet to bolt to and following the hull bottom, this causes the jet nozzle to get pushed into the water as the bow lifts

Try a rubber toothed belt and toothed cogs for smoothness and reliability..The chain will stretch and jump off over time
