Awesome! Hey look another tunnel in the rabbit hole. Thanks for showing this. I'm going to continue to watch this.

Did you get it figured out yet? Shorten the distance from the dripper to the ramp to about a 1/2 inch, 30 degree ramp angle and spray or coat the ramp with graphite or spray-on bullet mold release. Keep your unmelted lead to the far end of the pan and tilt your pan and hot plate forward so you have a small pool of melted lead. To much melted lead against the dripper or to hot and your lead will spit out like a garden hose and never form the drops you want. Slower the drip bigger the shot. Hope this helps you and others. Zinc won't won't work.

Very cool project! Yes Dave has much expertise here. As suggested looks too long and dont drop into water. Best part, NOTHING WASTED!! Re melt try again!!

Personally I think u need to cool your droplets with a longer fall and I would try get rid of the plate altogether. But I know nothing about making shot. Just an observation.

Pretty sweet start, I like the cast iron pan setup. Could be a few things.. cooling too much on the metal flap being the big one from the looks of it, the way it's coming off in flat chunks. If that's galvanized steel please be sure you've got ventilation while the zinc burns off. That stuff is no good for you in fumes.

I thought that looked good. You could market that shot with a cool name and make millions. Just powder cot it black and label it as Tactical Shrapnel shot.
I just watched a video on this and realized I was wrong about the plate . Good luck.

there's a formula for distance. either 1/4 inch or 110 feet. use anti freeze instead of water.

Excellent project B&B! There's a huge thread on "Shotgun World" about shot makers, over 75 pages of forum reading, it was really interesting to read. Also the Russians are pretty good at simple shot making, there's a few vids on youtube that I stumbled on. I got splatters like you have when I was dripping from too high. I think closer to the water worked best. Fun Stuff. Mike.

I believe I seen a video some time ago in which they used anti-seize or silicone paste on the ramp to help with stiction but I can't be sure.

Additionally you could try candle soot. I used to do this for my fishing sinker molds as they were built rougher than bullet molds. Just hold the ramp really close to or in the candle flame to get good coverage. A old hurricane lamp would also work really well if you don't have candles.

Man. I’d hate to get shot with that messy concoction. Hopefully you find something thst works. Can you drip it right into the water? I’d love to see you make an affordable shotmaker

Instead of having the lead hit a hot piece of steel on the way down to the water bucket.... Have them hit a seriously waterlogged wood board. Your problem is the lead is too hot when it hits the water its flattening out... You want it already starting to cool on its freefall so itll hold that spherical shape as it hits the water as it will onky be partially molten. You can also try jus setting a wood board into the water bucket kind of like a ramp and can have the led drip onto that. I use a variation of this for making silver shot and it works quite well. Also with your setup a higher fall after the lead leaves your bread pan might also help 👍😉

You dont want a ramp. The molten metal has to free fall far enough to break into droplets mid-air, then fall into a quench to freeze those spheroids. Any kind of post nozzle ramp is just going to produce what you got (crap). The molten metal has to be in a superheat ( heated above the phase change temp) state as it falls, so it will (due to surface tension) break up into droplets that form spheroids. There is a reason manufacturers use "shot towers" to form commercial shot. What youre doing is needlessly exposing yourself to cumulatively toxic lead fumes for no reason, because your technique CAN'T produce what you want, ever.
