It’s really fascinating to think that the first jet engines were effectively just oversized turbochargers that used a drastically different turbine design to create thrust, however the compressor side being identical to that of a normal turbocharger, but sometimes with twin compressor blade sides.

For the afterburner, did you just inject fuel through a small fuel line at the beginning of the exhaust nozzle?
@rcfreak2493

Basically yes. No form of injectors were used here just plumbed the line right into the side.

@@rcfreak2493 Was the afterburner liquid fuel instead of something gaseous like propane? If it was liquid how did you pump it into the exhaust pipe
@MineUK60
3 жыл бұрын
@@Savage_Offroad Probably not needed. There would be a small venturi effect providing suction. But much bigger is the pressure generated when the fuel can is turned upside down - the can opening is now on the bottom, and is not too far below the afterburner. Weight of the liquid fuel is probably enough to force fuel into the afterburner :)

@rcfreak2493
3 жыл бұрын
This was just a proof of concept to see if it would work. The AB fuel is diesel. The diesel was just plumbed right into the AB I didn't use any sort of fuel injectors. For delivery I used a 4" pvc pipe as a tank for the diesel and just hooked an air compressor at 60psi to the take to pressurize it and pump the fuel to the AB. The flow was controlled with a needle valve.
@Savage_Offroad

@@rcfreak2493 Could you use a small pump to create pressure to force the diesel into the exhaust pipe instead of a piece of pvc and an air compressor ?

@@rcfreak2493 thanks so much for your help. You said that your diesel pressure for me the afterburner was 60 psi, correct? And what are you doing in the video by tipping the propane cylinder? Is that the actual afterburner that I’m seeing or is that needed to ignite the diesel that’s being forced into the exhaust pipe?
@rcfreak2493
3 жыл бұрын
@@Savage_Offroad I varied the pressure to what ever it seemed the ab liked. It was easy since i was using an air compressor. I was tipping the tank over to feed the engine liquid propane and build up more chamber pressure. I don't recommend this. Liquid propane floods the combustion chamber and doesn't burn fully until after the turbine blades so your blades will heat up very fast and melt as mine did shortly after this video :)

Lol. Nice way to start the pump/ turbine. That turbine works as a pump right?
@rcfreak2493

It works the same as a normal jet engine would. The cold side of the turbo compresses the air. fuel is added, burned and sent through the hot side of the turbo where it spins the turbine blades in turn, spinning the compressor blades.
