So I know NOTHING about TGTB...BUT IEW is great for grammar, vocab and spelling. Their Fix It grammar starts out slow and builds each week. By the end of the year your child has handwritten a story. Each day has its own vocabulary word and a sentence they have to fix based on the week's lesson and then they rewrite the sentence. And it only takes about 15 minutes a day...for vocab AND grammar. Their spelling is awesome too. It is split into sections A, B, & C. You learn the rules for all the A words (easier) before going to the B words and then the C (hardest) words are last but uses the same rules for each list of words...it is a mastery approach where they can work as fast or as slow as they need. It works like this...they take a spelling test every day. Every. Single. Day...but there are only 15 words per test, and they have to get a 100% 2 x in a row before they can move onto the next list. We add vocab on to this because we look up any words we don't know, and I make them use it in a sentence for the two tests (verbally). Also, every 5th(?) lesson is a review lesson, so they have to test again on the words they missed for the previous 4 tests...my kids have challenged themselves not to miss any, so they get 2 days "off" of spelling as a reward for their spelling skills. Whatever works. Anyway, that being said, it takes us 30 minutes a day and we have spelling, grammar and vocab done. just like that. Gentle learning and stress free. Worth every penny Anyway, I too am looking for a logic course for my child. Harder than it seems.

My ADHD hated the jumping around in TGATB. Math was worse.

I am still a newer homeschooler (3rd year) and I have used TGTB as a non Christian and enjoyed certain levels- I liked level 3, level 4 and level 5. I did not like level 2 for my youngest, level 7 for my son or HS1- he just blew through the units so quickly and he really needed more coaching on his writing- I do like the book selections included. I struggle with this too- I think it is all so beautiful but I just don't think it fits perfectly. I think I am going to switch them all this coming school year but will revisit HS level when my younger daughters get there. I have a 3rd, 5th and 9th grader currently.

The jumping around works for my daughter because she gets bored easily. She loves GATB. But we were doing other things for composition and art and geography as a group so it became too redundant. This coming school year we’re giving Simply Charlotte Mason a shot for her language arts (grammar and spelling). It looks like what would be left with GATB if you stripped out everything but grammar and spelling.

I totally agree with you about the lower levels of TGTB LA. I don't feel like it's systematic or well sequenced, and it is so full of "other stuff" that doesn't really go in depth in all the LA categories.

Lol! I'm the opposite with you on the good and the beautiful. My youngest has ADD pretty severely and he has done really well with their elementary levels. My son is in 7th going into 8th grade. This year Math has been a struggle. He is high functioning autistic, which normally only shows in social situations. But this Math has really messed with him. He takes in information extremely quickly and remembers lots but has a longer processing time. So I'm thinking about teaching textbooks for him for next year. (Probably Math 7) Any thoughts as to how this will go?

The best thing I can recommend is having your son do the TT free trial. It's 15 lessons and that should give you an idea of if that program will work for him or not. If not, you might look into "Learn Math Fast." It's a workbook program but it can move as quickly or slowly as you'd like and focuses on mastery.

For our first official year (grade 1 ) I did planning during the late spring and early summer - it was a lot. This year I am planning out our entire curriculum now, and then I will be into the end of year reports our province demands and God willing, that means I also get a break from mid-June til mid-August :) Even though we are nowhere near the grades your daughters are in, these videos are really nice for information gathering for later years :)

After seeing the daily skills building, and the Evan moor spelling. What do you recommend? Is the Evan moor spelling similar to the daily skills building? I’m trying to decide what one to get for my 5th grader next school year…

I struggle with The Good and the Beautiful younger levels. I love them but I agree with you that they are all over the place. My boys cannot do that but my daughter can. This year we are using the Level 8 Book Studies and they are going well! The Art of Argument from Classical Academic Press has an online logics class that is good. It’s a little pricey though. I did the self paced option. I’m SO sad I only have a few more years left of homeschooling! 🥲 I have loved following you through the years.
