Could you go over the difference between the teachers guide versus the home instructors guide?

I have an almost 9 year old and a recently turned 8 year old who I have had on the same level in math. We used Math lessons for a living education k and 1st. Then started 2nd and I just knew it wasn't the right curriculum for us. I researched so many math curriculums. I ordered horizons to look at and didnt like it. I looked at the singapore us edition and like the idea but just didn't like it, it sounds silly/weird to say, but its ugly. Then I decided on mathusee. We have done alpha and a little over half of beta. We are going through it pretty quickly and it has really helped my kids. We use the free xtra math sometimes. They like Mr. Demme and it seems like they have made a lot of progress. But both are still writing a lot of numbers backwards. My son is really good at mental math and so he doesn't like to show his work and he rushes through and makes mistakes. Then he gets really upset that I want him to fix his mistake or check his work. My daughter is good at showing her work and seems to understand it but just really needs the blocks and visual representation of the numbers and processes pretty slowly which is fine but I think we can work on it. Dimensions looks awesome. We did the placement and since they havent had any multiplication they need to start in 2a. I ordered 2a and 2b home instructors guides, textbooks and one copy of the workbooks and plan to either write on paper or dry erase boards or have them verbally answer. I have a friend who is willing to let me borrow MUS gamma soon and so I'm considering using it to supplement if needed. I hope this is the right choice for them. I really think my daughter will do well with it because it looks so nice and is visually appealing from what I have seen. I have thought about Christian light education math for my son if this doesn't work for him. He likes their learning to read program and their math seems like it would fit him since it is a similar format. I love math but teaching it has not been easy. Reading, writing and math have been decently challenging for both of these children. I suspect dyslexia and some processing delays so it seems we really need a thorough curriculum and will often be "behind". The beauty of homeschooling, right?! Sorry for the looonnggg comment. Any tips for me?

I cannot recommend Math U See enough because it is straightforward and it builds on each concept before it. It’s a mastery program which means students shouldn’t move on before they understand the concept because they need it for the next concept they will be learning about. The beauty of MUS, as you mentioned, is that you don’t have to be the one to introduce the concepts to your child because you can watch Mr. Demme in the videos! We love watching them together in my house. But then once your child does the work, you can help guide them along and check that they understand because you know how to do it from watching it being explained. For reading, I highly recommend All About Reading because it is made especially for children with dyslexia (not just for them, but it was originally designed for a student with dyslexia). It shows the students why we have different rules for sounds and phonograms in the English language instead of just having them memorize spelling lists. I wish you luck with your kids! Let me know what you use and if it works for you!
