💚 I know this video was from a few months ago but I appreciate your honesty in admitting some things didn’t work and you had to change them. I watched some of your other videos and I thought it seemed like a lot & like maybe I’m not looking for enough to teach my son? He has been doing an online cyber school for 2yrs and I have just supplemented. He’s going into 2nd grade next year and will be my 1st year homeschooling on my on. I originally started with the cyber school because I wasn’t sure I could to it on my own. But the more we go the more I want to do my own thing. I’m still nervous I may not be able to do a good job & I’m trying to find as much info as I can, thank you for your honest videos and help.

We are LOVING 100 Easy Lessons. We begin our homeschool with it every day and my Michael is doing great with it. We were using Get Ready for the Code, but it was way below his level, so I tabled it and ordered the Explode the Code series. The way I'm introducing geography and science is that we do a state study one day a week (I bought a small book of state facts and a coloring map from the Dollar Tree - he finds the state using clues I give him and colors it while I read him the facts. I'm learning as much as he is :D) and we do a nature study once a week using Blossom and Root. We go to our favorite outdoor space in Chattanooga for that and it's awesome :) I also do unit studies (got that idea from you!). Right now we are doing ocean animals. We do a few math worksheets and play Sum Swamp for addition - he's coming right along :) Reading, writing and 'rithmetic!! :)

In regards to scaling back- Abby at Rooted in Rest said something that really resonated with me. She said you don't have to do it everything EVERY year. You can focus on different things in different years. If you have small kids, you have a long time, you can fit it in over time. And that really gave me a sense of freedom. We can go heavier on different things in different years and that's ok.

When we started I felt so much guilt and resentment toward the morning basket thing that everyone seems to do. By the time we got through allll the things my kids were ready for a break and we hadn’t even started our day! After breakfast and playing we start the day with a poem of the day and a SQUILT song of the day that the kids listen to while eating a snack. Done. Then we move on to our real day. I feel. So. Much. Better. I think if you aren’t assessing what works and what doesn’t you probably aren’t paying attention, so no guilt!

I think I have the opposite issue. I keep wondering if I'm not doing enough for my 5 and half year old Kindergartner. He is learning to read and write just fine with Bob books and The Reading Lesson curriculum. He is learning math with Math with Confidence and Geography with Evan Moore. We bake together and garden weekly. Play at the park with friends daily. I like the simplicity of our current way of doing things.

Then we did the 20 easy reading lesson afterwards for practice. He turned 6 today and is reading chapter books. Oh and After a few lessons he “knew what to do”. He didn’t need me to read what was in red…lol. I skimmed it for anything important. I can’t wait to hear your experience.

I relate to you so much! Goodness by Wednesday of this week I already thought what I wanted to do for the year wasn’t going to work. Our morning group work was taking us 3 hours, afternoon core work while my 2 year old naps was 2 hours. No time for free play and creativity because once school was done, my kids want outside for like 2 hours! Then Thursday happened. We had a day where morning basket, science, Bible, history and geography were done in less than 2 hours, rabbit trails and all. Mind you, I don’t even have all those subjects planned for every day, I was just able to do them all! Afternoon school was just an hour. Now I’m beginning to think my feast I’ve come up with for my kids may actually work?! Oh I hope so, hearing you say you had to change your morning basket hurt my heart a little. That’s our favourite time of day and I don’t want to take anything out of mine to shorten our morning! Love your channel so much! 💞

Totally understand having to switch gears when a curriculum isn’t working out! We do that every year. I used to buy curriculum for years in advance and then I realized it was a big mistake because nine times out of 10 you’re going to want to switch it up or something doesn’t work quite how you anticipated. Lol! I’m starting to learn for our own personal style that if I have a book or curriculum that is more of like an outline or kind of a guideline or a timeline of what potentially you would want to kind of learn for that topic is a lot easier for us because then I can pull resources and things that hands on or that are fun and enjoyable while still covering the topics that we should be learning but I don’t have to sit there and read chapter 1 followed by chapter 2 and so on and so on. That gets very dry for us and in one ear and out the other. I have a seventh and fourth grader and one thing we have really love doing is we do a lot of story based learning. Even if it’s for science or history especially right now we’re doing an ocean unit and instead of trying to sit there and learn all these dry facts we’ve been really learning stories and I’ve even utilize stories that are picture books that obviously are much younger than my kids need but it’s been so good because it’s been this really well-rounded story about say a certain scientist and it’s helped us all kind of retain the information because now we have a personal connection to that person and a lot of times followed up with a video. And that helps because now instead of it being a dry fact about a person we have a story to attach to that person. And we’ve kind of borrowed a little bit of the Waldorf style where you make a main lesson book so the kids will read a story book and then will watch a video and then will draw and be artistic and have something beautiful to show for it at the end.

We typically start a little after 9. I try to be finished no later than 3:30 (sometimes finishing earlier), but that includes lunch/snacks, getting out almost every day for extracurricular or other activities (like nature walks and library visits), and crafts/art. Sometimes working on art or a craft will take us past 3:30, but that’s only when the kids want to keep working on something they’ve started. My kindergartener also has a big break while the second graders are getting their individualized instruction. She gets to play during that time and most often chooses to do puzzles or play with magnet tiles.
