In front of Cumberland County High School in Crossville, Tennessee proudly stands a Douglas A-4 Skyhawk draped in the colors of the world famous U.S. Navy Blue Angels. The origins of the Skyhawk date back to the mid 1980s, when then Cumberland County High School alum, Curt Watson, served as a pilot for the demonstration squadron. At the time, the school celebrated their aviation themed moniker, the Cumberland County Jets, by displaying a static Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star in front of their campus. The aircraft was eventually swapped for a fleet gray A4 Skyhawk that caught the attention of Watson while visiting his hometown during an off weekend for the Blues.
Watson, who's gregarious personality can be quite infectious, had no problem convincing city management to allow the Blue Angels to paint the A4 in their blue and gold squadron colors. With the authorization and financial sponsorship from the city of Crossville, Watson engaged his crew chief and outstanding Blue Angels maintenance team, who enthusiastically volunteered to transform the A4. As of 2022, the A4 still stands guard in front of Cumberland County High School and has recently been the subject of a paint restoration projects, including member of the Blue Angels maintainers that participated in the original paint job.
