I can't believe you think that, this is perfect for a child's movie because it shows the cruelty of people and the kindness in people too, showing what the true meaning of this movie is. Difference between Man and monster. The scene where Quasi saved Esme is so powerful that it shows how strong kindness is. Quasi wasn't going to allow the ONE person who stood up for him and showed him kindness and compassion to die. This disney movie is one of the greatest of the 90's era!

Ironic how Disney structures this scene. We laugh at Quasimoto's humiliation and suffering; thinking it's funny to see others get knocked off their high horse. But when Esmeralda walks onto the stage: she apologizes, wipes his face, & frees him. And she lectures on about how no one aides the most vulnerable; and we feel a sense of indignation. Later for comic relief, a frail, old man is freed only to be imprisoned once more. What have we learned here: whoever laughed is an ASSHOLE! Guilty

First of all, I hate to be that person, but I think you meant "defy," not "defined." Secondly, when I first watched this, it was about three years ago, so that would mean I never watched it as a kid. Because of this, when I first saw the scene, I thought she was going to attack Frollo or something. She should have done just that, if it wasn't a Disney movie. It would've made the movie a whole lot more interesting, especially if Frollo survived the attack.

OK, so for some reason I found myself debating this in my head, and I've come to one conclusion: Hunchback of Notre Dame is WAAAAAY better than Beauty and the Beast. I mean, think about it. Strong female heroine (Belle vs. Esmeralda)? Both of them, check although Esme was quite the action girl as well as being smart. half a point extra for Hunchback of Notre Dame. Moral about not judging a book by it's cover? Check and check. Falling for a dude who treats you right ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE MOVIE?? Yes for Esmeralda, but let's just face it, folks: Beauty and the Beast might just as well be retitled Stockholm Syndrome: the Musical! For Kids!!! (Yet THIS movie is considered inappropriate to some people? Why? Because Frollo got a boner? Puritanical, much? Epic facepalm.) True enough, Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame was changed radically from the original book version, but Disney isn't too good about sticking to original storylines on any of it's fairytale movies, either, and guess what Beauty and the Beast is? That's right, it's a French fairytale! Although it's been so many years since I've read Beauty and the Beast that I've forgotten how the original story went, I think I can safely cross my fingers and assume this one is a tie. Wanna talk people of color in Disney films? Technically a French girl is still a white European, whereas Roma Gypsies are actually originally of Middle Eastern descent, so Esme, who is essentially a Middle Eastern Indian immigrant or descendant thereof, wins. Both films are actually fairly violent (angry mobs, battle scenes, direct hand to hand combat fight scenes) and Beauty and the Beast also shows domestic violence. BOTH movies allude to rape, whether stating it outright (Frollo) or implying it indirectly (Gaston trying to force Belle into marrying him. When people marry, do you think they remain virgins? No. If the marriage is forced, do you think the sex is consensual? No.) So, since I get to choose between two relatively violent films, I'm gonna have to say that I prefer Hunchback of Notre Dame's violent scenes because the characters for the most part have good reasons why they're doing it. The Gypsies in the Court of Miracles where trying to do to who they assumed were Frollo's spies the same types of things Frollo had done to them. Even Frollo's awful guards technically work for law enforcement and are just trying to put bread on the table, it's just that they're following orders from a complete dick. That's not even bringing up how angry the Parisians probably were after their city was nearly burned to the ground. Beauty and the Beast's characters are being violent more or less for it's own sake, just to be abusive, domineering sheeple. another extra half a point for Hunchback of Notre Dame. So Hunchback of Notre Dame has beaten Beauty and the Beast by three points. Yay! Hunchback wins!
@mythloverb5931

Technically speaking, Belle didn't get Stockholm Syndrome. She only was nice to the beast when he controlled his temper. When the beast let her go, she went. She didn't love him until a few moments before he was human again.
@SamehKhan
9 жыл бұрын
Mythlover B Short of that Stockholm Syndrome point, I agree with goldilocksgirly. Hunchback's only drawback as a perfect film to cover children and adults was the gargoyles. While they could easily have been imaginary (to nicely round off the realism of his loneliness and insanity for adults, and still be there for the humor), in the final battle scene they actually physically fight guards. Removing 7-8 seconds from this movie would legitimately make this Disney adaptation flawless.
@cerulee
9 жыл бұрын
I've seen the Stockholm Syndrome argument so many times in Beauty and the Beast, and all I can say is that apparently there are many people out there who don't understand what Stockholm Syndrome is. Belle does not have Stockholm Syndrome. She does accept being a prisoner in exchange for her father's life, but she always stands up for herself when the Beast is treating her like shit. When the Beast demands she join him for dinner, she refuses. When the Beast tells her not to go into the West Wing, she does it anyway. And once the Beast sets her free, she LEAVES. The only reason she goes back is because Gaston was going to kill him, and he just wanted to live out the rest of his beastly existence in peace. If Belle is the victim of anything, she's a victim of her own sense of honor that keeps her from reneging on a promise.
