The fiber plates (frictions) are the "drive" plates and engage the fingers of the outer clutch basket, which is geared to the crankshaft and rotates in the opposite direction from the crankshaft. The steel plates are the "driven" plates and engage the splines of the clutch center (inner hub). The inner hub, in turn, is splined to the input shaft of the transmission. The gears, coupling the outer clutch basket with the crankshaft are what is called the "primary drive". Another common type of primary drive is primary chain drive. It is my understanding that the parallel splines of the inner hub and the diverging channels between the fingers of the outer basket work in concert to provide additional room for movement (slight fanning out) of the fiber plates relative to the steel plates (which maintain their alignment relative to one anther) responsive to existing shear forces, thus helping separate the clutch plates when the clutch lever is pulled in.
