Great video and guys please use the Honda fluid!!! The thermostat is a part that can fail and replacement and refill so much easier when you’re using OEM fluids!

@cavvvyr7021 ‘24 Subaru Crosstrek Onyx Frustrates I would definitely go OEM. I went aftermarket or returned them after two weeks as they were too noisy and I got brand new OEM.

Thanks for the video! I'm in the process of a coolant flush now. I'm doing a drain and fill with distilled water until clear. I run a few days between drains with max heat. I was planning three drains, but it's still blue, so off to the store for more distilled water. The final fill will be with Amsoil full strength to give me a 50/50 final mix.

You could remove the water hoses and remove the thermostat and flush the engine with a garden hose. However, I am not sure how hard it is in this vehicle.
@mikeheckman4995

@@Jack51971 I did that with an older vehicle a few years back. Less hassle for sure, but it introduces corrosive elements into the coolant system. By the way, it took about a dozen drain/fill to clear the system with distilled water.

thanks for the video! I have to install a block heater core kit this weekend into my 9th gen, just deciding to do a complete rad drain and fill, with whatever coolant I loose from the block when removing the plug on the front of the block for the install. I do agree what a poor set up for the reservoir

My drain took out ~4.2 litres. It had the original OEM stuff...now I see why they tell you to always use the original, because you don't want mixing with other brands - even if they're specified for Honda. The OEM stuff seems to be more oily, there's some sort of a lubricant in it. When you use OEM, you're only 'topping off' the fluid. You do your next drain in 5 years/50k thereafter (10 years/100k first time) to refresh it - because it was never fully originally drained, otherwise you could probably do another 10 year/100k stretch if you did a full flush. So, use the original OEM stuff - now I'm kind of wishing I did... if you do that, no need to re-cycle the fluid after one week.

Is it still safe to just drain it one time and just put a new coolant in? Or do I really need to drain it again after a few days?

I used a $4 fluid quality tester that tests freezing and boiling temp. It read maximum performance for both after never having changed the fluid before 240k miles and 11 years now one owner. Not sure if I should still flush it anyhow.

There are anti-corrosive additives added to antifreeze as well to keep your cooling system free of any rust or scale. This is also a main reason you want to change and flush the fluid.

I prefer this method as well. I'm using the Toyota pink coolant just to try it out. I had to do this I think 5 times to get all of the blue coolant out.

Coolant degrades with time and losses its ability to resist corrosion and maintain boiling point. Typically changed every 5 years

will there be any issue if I don't drain the overflow reservoir on first flush? It should mix with the rest of the liquid later on

Yes it will mix eventually with the rest. Any reason why you don’t want to drain it first?
