I never had to drop the exhaust to get mine out and installed just slid it out next to the exhaust and the problem with the welded studs spinning on the top while you are trying to get the 10 mm bolts out i just put another weld across the top of the studs and they came out no problem. If you don't have a welder just use J.B. weld and let it dry. Trying to hold them with vice grips is just crazy i messed with it for 45 minutes before i just said screw it and welded them. Plus if you do weld it they go back together much easier note soak the 10 mm bolts in PB blaster or WD40 the night before you try to take them out the heat from the exhaust is causing them to be difficult to get off

Personally, I didn't run into this problem because I don't have an exhaust pipe on my car right now, but as long as you reassembled the shifter linkages in the same order as you had taken them off, you should have no problem shifting. My advice is to disassemble the linkages and see if you can tighten down all of the bolts connecting the shifter to the car because the bolts may be loose making the shifter sit lower than it should thus making the linkages hit the exhaust pipe.

Hey, thanks for the video. I thought it would be way harder than that but it doesn`t seem too bad. haha should take less time than when I installed my tachometer. I should be installing a short shifter on my 94 Civic hb this summer :) can`t wait!!

I angled the kink so that the pointed end is closer to the dash. I felt that the shifter nob was centered better with the shifter adjusted that way. I don't think it matters which way you put it. It just depends on personal preference.

@SamuelZavala okay so if i am understanding you correctly, I ran into this same dilemma. So for me there were two rubber bushings left over at the end of the install. These bushings went between the shifter and the linkage. On the stock shifter there is enough room for both of the bushings to fit, but on my aftermarket shifter I could only get one to fit. So my advice to you is to try to fit one of the bushings in between the shifter and the linkage. My guess is that this will fix your problem.

good video and nice job on explaining...cam was shaky but not too bad. wish you had some light under the car but the pics helped. i got a new oem dual bend that i installed in my civic and it feels better that the single bend shifter. it also has a shorter throw and feels more accurate going into gears

I appreciate the comments and suggestions! Yeah I was filming using my iPhone so it was hard to hold it and do things at the same time haha. But I have since gotten a GoPro and I will be using that for any future installs.

@ZakryZapata As far as I know, you unbolt the exhaust pipe from the flange right after the engine/tranny. Then take the rubber molding off of the metal piece (sorry I can't remember the technical name for this piece but it is a metal piece coupled inside a rubber piece). There should be two in the middle area that you should take off. There will be more all of the way down the exhaust pipe so you can take off as many as you need to "drop" the exhaust pipe. As far as I know this is how you do it.

Thanks. I am not sure about the 88 accord. My guess is that they do have them (seems like most cars do) but i can recommend a website that can help you find one. I use Andy's Auto Sport to search for parts for my civic. You can also go to the megan racing website and see if they have anything for your car. Hope this helps!

I am not completely sure but it should at least be the same process or close. Look for a 1991 crx shifter online and it should work out closely

Does anyone know what the name of the piece that the 10mm bolts go through? Like that metal piece that holds the brushings to the shifter.

You know I honestly don't know. I sold the car in April so I'm not quite sure how it's held up. The entire time I used it I really loved it and didn't have any problems with it. I currently have a Nissan 300zx and I put a megan shifter in that. It is an awesome shifter for the price and I definitely recommend it.

was the megan shifter in the 300zx cheap in price too? I know they say you get what you pay for. Just as long as it works/feels good and doesnt snap ill go for it
@kgib808

ryan fong The shifter for the 300zx was about $70. So a little more than double the price for the civic. I feel like it is just about the same quality as the civic. I do love it and it is definitely an improvement over the stock shifter. I do suggest it. I have never really "hard" shifted, but it does feel sturdy and strong.

kgib808 I finally bought the short shifter and tried installing yesterday. Does the megan shifter need those slim bushings that came out from the stock shifter? The ones that come out between the shift linkage and the mounting point that touch the bottom of the shifter. It wont fit with them, im thinking that its a couple mm wider than the oem stock
@kgib808

ryan fong What I did was file down the bushings that came with the shifter. Mine didn't fit either so I filed them down to make them fit. I didnt try the oem bushings. You might give them a try if they are thinner.
