Them 2 strokes always run the best right before they blow up. Especially the late 70s air cooled bikes. If it seem like she’s running too good... back off. It’s probably lean.

Too much engine braking at high rpms and pinned throttle at the end. There is your reason...
@thesuspensionguru

Not really, the engine was rattling like a little end before I went out. The bike wasn't pinned or under much load to speak of, I just thought I'd ride it once before a strip down and it had different ideas.

@@landonbond1599 Engine braking on 2 strokes can cause them to blow up. Oil is in the fuel and if your decreasing speed your not giving it gas and its not getting properly lubricated. Not saying thats the case with this guy but in general it can happen.

@@moistnuuget6997 Then how do you slow down and prevent engine braking then? I mean I just got my 89 CR125 and I was just trail riding earlier for about an hour and I would sind out all the gears and 5th came up to about 60 mile an hour and then i would slow down and drop it down to 4th wind it out shift to 5th get up to 60 and then just kind of cruise between 4th and 5th gear but obviously when I slow down is that engine braking? I wasn't really use my brakes at all should I be using those to slow down quicker than wind it back out and just keep going back-and-forth between winding out the geads all the time?

Tbh Kev I haven't looked. I'm planning to strip down in a month or so, but suspect it's a little end that took the piston. It's going to have a full rebuild and I need to check the jetting too. I took the irresponsible view of it needs a rebuild anyway, I kind of was 50/50 to it being ok for a little ride around.

Not necessarily, depends on a lot of things. This engine was tired and I just thought I'd have one ride on it before I strip it, never rode it before. I've always run 40:1 on all my watercooled 2 strokes and never have issues. Even when I had one of these back in 96 that was highly tuned, still 40:1 and screamed all day. This wasn't exactly being rode hard either, it was just on it's way out.
