My last bike was a 01’ YZ250F. The YZ weighed 203 lbs (dry) 39 hp @ 13,500 rpm. The CRF weighs 311 lbs (curb) 27 hp @ 8,500 rpm. So the CRF felt heavy and underpowered. BUT I’m also 56 years old now. So compared to a Victory Buzz-Around 10.2 Mobility Scooter (weight 168 lbs. top speed 5 mph.) The CRF300L feels like the right bike for me.

For some things weight... just straight up weight... does matter. We spent a week riding in the Rockies last month... we had a KTM 501exc (255lbs wet), 1 KTM 690/2 Husqvarna 701 Enduro's (345lbs wet), and a KTM 790 Adventure R (450lbs wet). In those conditions (steep to very steep mountain trails) the 790 struggled and was a LOT more work to manhandle around (fatiguing the rider to the point he took a couple days off) to the point where I'd say that the bike is borderline unsuitable for those conditions (Mountain Passes) . The 690's performed well and overall handled the conditions reasonably well but were still work to ride... but the 501 ate it up. There really was no contest... I bought the 701 as a lightweight adv bike and it's great at that (able to handle extended pavement runs in comfort wheras the 501 license plates are more so you can safely cross roads), but once you're in demanding offroad terrain every pound becomes more work for the rider. Might be hard to contrast if you're only looking at 15lbs (and other factors like cog may offset some/all of it)... but it's blatantly obvious at 100-200lbs.

I agree about the balance and distribution. I have A 1980s Yamaha XT 600 which is very close to the weight of this bike. I have not ridden the 300 L, but just sitting on one in the showroom the 300 feels like like it's at least 60 pounds lighter.

This is really good info, But would be even better and easy to do at the same time, If you Lay the bike down, Then put the straps around the pick up points like the handle bar and rear rack or sub frame, Then just slightly lift the fork lift To simulate the pick up weight a human will experience when they have to pick up the bike. For example, the T 700 is is is one of the lightest is pissed middleweight bikes, is, even lighter than AKLR650, Yet people report it's one of the most difficult to pick up. They should do this on all dual sport and adventure bikes.

I started riding dirt bikes back in 1971 and I'm still riding . My latest bike is a 2013 BMW G650 GS sertao . The stock weight is 420 lbs . I have been on single trails with both the 300l rally and 300l . I can tell you that on the trails the Sertao is easier to handle . Its the first bike I have owned where the weight of the gas is under the seat . You would not believe the difference this makes on tight single trails . At 420 lbs it feels lighter than the 300l and a lot lighter than the rally . You are correct the weight on paper means nothing . If you get a chance get on a Sertao and you will see what I mean . You won't believe a 650cc bike is easier to ride vs a 300cc bike .
@t_c5266

Back at stock weight, sure. But imagine if you didn't take weight saving measures. You'd be like 15-20lbs over stock weight with your upgrades. So having it come out to a wash while also being a better bike is a huge win. Although i've heard rotational inertia (heavy tires and sprocket) factor in multiplicative towards the bikes handling while weight savings on the body are 1 to 1. Meaning 1lb added on your tires feels like 2 lbs added to the body (not the correct math, just an example)
@sk8moto
3 жыл бұрын
at 8:22, you meant 330 lbs. Good video btw, but regarding the capability on single tracks, the difficulty of single tracks very greatly, it seems you ride fairly easy flat single tracks, around here at my local OHV, the single tracks are tough and hilly, very few people take a dual sport through them, if so, usually on the WR250R. Also, the CRF has part of the engine weight lower than the footpeg compared to the WR250R, great for lowering CG but sacrifice ground clearance. I smack my bashplate a lot on the CRF250L on singles tracks with deep whoops, partly from the soft stock suspension.
@awatts222
3 жыл бұрын
Definitely. I flatten my suspension doing complex single track but it was the deep whoops that did it mostly. The rest of it was fine, so was the weight of the bike. I'd say also not quite geared low enough for it. Still fun though. I do it on my rally, f*ck it!

Most of the feeling of weight on a bike (whilst moving) comes from the gyroscopic/intertia forces of the engine parts (heavier with larger cc's) combined with the amount of torque (the twisting force which makes the bike want to stand upright with the engine braking also influencing the chassis too). Then of course there is the COG to top it all off. A good example is how a 4 stroke 250F will feel heavier than a 2 stroke 250 because it has a spinning cam and timing chain (placed high in the engine) combined with engine braking - even if the static weight of the 2T is heavier. P.S I have a 4 cell anti gravity battery in my 250, weighs 1 pound.

Excellent analysis. IMO, this is a vg bike for those that can only afford one bike. A true 50/50 dual-sport bike, which makes it a great value! However, this bike would not suit me well because it's too heavy for me to lift or drag it should I crash and get stuck halfway up a hill. So, until it gets 50 pounds lighter, I have to own a street bike and a trail bike.
@MotorcyclesOffroad

It absolutely matters if you take it off road. It can be critical, even life saving. Why ? Well, if I drop my bike on a singletrack, on the downslope side and it's steep, there is no way I get it back up. Please explain to me why are you changed the chain? What did you mean by your comments about reliability and weight and such. What is the difference between Xring and o ring?
@MotorcyclesOffroad
3 жыл бұрын
Mainly changed the chain because I went with a bigger sprocket. You have basic chains which are just normal and will stretch over time. Oring chains have sealed gaskets which hold lubrication, they last much longer then a standard chain but come at the cost of loosing horsepower because of how stiff they are. Xring chains also have sealed lubrication but negate some or all lose of power, their downside it cost. Some people when they re-gear their bike will lower the front sprocket and add teeth to the rear. each tooth taken from the front equals about 3 added to the rear. I dont like this because the front has more contact since its usually only 13tooth give or take. So I like to instead add more to the rear (so 6 on the rear inplace of -1 front and add 3 to rear) by doing this my stock chain will no longer fit, so what I have to do is order a large one and cut it to size. changing the teeth on the sprockets will in a equal manner either add torque and minus top speed or add top speed and removed torque. Hope all that helps, I will make a video for it soon.

2 жыл бұрын
Dry weight for a KTM690 is 146kg, wet weight is around 157kg. That’s without replacing the skid plate and adding knuckle guards which is the absolute minimum on this bike. When comparing wet weights between bikes, the fuel tank capacity matters, it’s tiny on the 300L, only about 8 litres. The KTMs are now around 13.5 litres. Fuel weighs around 0.75kg per litre so 4kg(9lbs) of that weight difference is tank capacity. I have owned both bikes. The KTM weight is heavy enough to worry me when riding solo, the seat height is also way too tall. The 300L weight feels even lighter than the 17kg difference possibly because it’s a smaller, less tall bike it’s just soo much easier to man handle.
