IMHO. Honda wants a very quiet motorcycle. They did as you showed. Mission accomplished.

Hi Robert. You are correct this is not an efficient flow design, common sense tells you that. Go turn a hosepipe on and stand on it then puncture holes in it and watch the water spray everywhere. SIDEWAYS. Thats whats happening here twice. This will be designed like that as a compromise, noise reduction is probably the main factor and because its really cheap and easy to produce ( and no i dont mean cheap and nasty I just mean it is low cost. Fact) . I did a degree in mechanical engineering some 30 years ago now but in summary. You are correct.

The small black thingy is called a baffle there karnac, it helps quiet the muffler and adding sufficient back pressure. If I know more about exhaust systems than you do, I bet Vance & Hines knows more than both of us put together. No offense, just my two cents.

+John Willener All the baffles that I've seen used for exhaust noise reduction offer some flow restriction but not to the extent of blocking the flow and forcing it through a few tiny holes as in this design. Radical changes in their exhaust systems came about after CARB fined them $500k - www.dealernews.com/dealernews/article/carb-hits-vance-hines-500k-penalty

+John Willener Oh, a rocket scientist to enlighten me. In my reply to Bill M below I identified the restriction as a baffle. I'm sure that V&H knows more than both of us but that's not the problem. The problem is meeting EPA and CARB requirements simply makes efficient designs near impossible to produce at a reasonable price.

I've finished my second season with my Vance & Hines GL1800 Monster Slip ON exhaust pipes and I totally disagree with you sir. I've noticed an increase in acceleration over the stock pipes and they sound incredible, so there goes your opinion of them being inefficient. I'll believe Vance & Hines engineers rather than your opinion.

+Michel Huot I'm happy for you and love to see dyno run comparisons from your bike. The real world runs I've seen show a 3 - 5 drop in both HP and torque compared to stock Honda GL1800 mufflers. Many folks think seat of the pants is the best dyno there is so if yours put a smile on your face good for you.

If you're looking for best performing system that I've found it's from Torq Master. Installing their cat eliminator Torq Loops and muffler style of your choice will give you a 5 - 7 rwhp boost with improved fuel economy too. My real world experience backed up by Dynojet dyno results. kzitem.info/news/bejne/1qR3yWGfiIt-bHY

What is inefficient about them? Looking at getting these for my bike!

Follow the exhaust flow - it is forced thru small holes in the baffle that are very restrictive. I've also disected Cobra mufflers and will be doing a video on them also. To date I've not found any EPA or CARB approved mufflers that aren't more restrictive than stock GL1800 mufflers and this has been confirmed on dyno runs. Torquemaster mufflers with their cat eliminators are the best I've found for both performance and mileage - 42 mpg @ 80 mph.
