Good vid, I would suggest as an idea for a good tour is the pecos de europa Spain 🇪🇸 it’s like west coast Scotland but on steroids and amazing roads and the wether can be spectacular, and the food is good and pleasant people. And ther are two main routs ferry from Portsmouth or Weymouth to bilbou or Santander. Or thru France 🇫🇷 down to Spain 🇪🇸. There’s lots of info out there for good routs hotels camping and so on. And it can be a good taster for European touring. Both times I’ve been there we have based are selves in a hotel and went out each day on different routs thru the ranges. I do recommend for most bike touring try not to over plan and have very tight timings and build flexibility in due things can happen eg delays but also you will come across unexpected places that you may want more time to explore or enjoy. And having a tight schedule can ruin in a way a trip if you find yourself rushed. But more touring you do the better and easyer it will get. Keep it simple and and enjoy.

I had a 2005 with Tulsa extra tall windshield. Because I wanted the Windstream to go over my helmet to prevent buffeting. Loved it, but at times it was difficult to see through and tall enough to block the wind so the rain to blow off the helmet visor. I like you are tall waisted. I found that if I raised up a bit or moved to either side, the wind would blow the rain off the helmet visor and blow off the rain. One day in NC, I had to leave in the cool of the morning, and the fog and the dew was fogging up the windscreen within a few minutes after cleaning it. I had to drive looking over the side of the windscreen till it warmed up enough to clear the screen. On your model, there are two levers that allow you to adjust the height of the windscreen. You can adjust down for the rain to allow more wind on your helmet. Also the front windscreen vent can be adjusted to allow the wind to hit your helmet visor. If the vent is fully closed it directs air up the windscreen as a defrost. If you open one or two clicks, it will direct the wind to you. Also, I found that Plexus is the best stuff to use as it is a fog/rain replant and protects the polycarbonate.
@fbglife
Жыл бұрын
Tim, thank you for that comment and for the tip about using the screen vent - I'd only thought of using it for cooling airflow but it makes great sense to use it like you described. Do you think that, on balance, an extra tall screen is a good investment, or a waste of money? Also, did it affect your passenger's comfort - either negatively or positively?
@Fireball1800
Жыл бұрын
@@fbglife I think it was a good investment for me and it kicked the wind stream up and over my helmet by about 1". You can gauge where the wind stream hits you by riding about 55+ mph, using your index finger, start at your chin and raise it till you feel the air pressure hitting it flowing off the windshield. This will tell you if the windshield needs to be raised or lowered in relation to your height. And how much larger windscreen you need. They make a Tall and Xtra Tall that is taller and wider than the stock. On mine the stream hit my finger just at the top of the pinlock shield on my helmet. Which meant that the wind was hitting the top of my helmet for about 2-3 inches. This was causing my head to buffet or shake. Raising the stock windscreen to the top moved this air up about 1 inch more but didn't kick it over and off my helmet. After the xtall tulsa was added, it moved this air about 1 inch above the helmet. This stopped the buffeting, plus it kicked almost all the air off my little lady who is shorter than me. When she is riding with me she is looking dead into the center of my helmet so she has to lean to the side to see around me. I'm 6 foot 3 and 3/4 inches tall with a 32 inch inseam. When I reached out to Tulsa, they recommended the xtall due to my height. Since 2005, Tulsa sold out to Slipstreamer and is 34 inches tall. You can see it in the link below. It will block a considerable amount of wind and rain off you and you may find it more difficult to see over. If you do spring for it, I'd make sure to get the one with the vent. Passenger comfort was enhanced as it put her in more of a bubble. I wish they made the 2021 GW tall windscreen 2 inches wider and about 2 inches taller than the tall one they offer. www.motosport.com/product/?cc=us&creative=77172033595707&device=c&gclid=ccc32802752417a059664b7db3f195e2&gclsrc=3p.ds&key=Slipstreamer-Tulsa-Windshield&mrkgadid=3309626396&mrkgcl=500&msclkid=ccc32802752417a059664b7db3f195e2&product_id=SLP0002-X004-Y001&psreferrer=www.bing.com/&pssource=true&rkg_id=0&segment=badger&Bing_PLA&variant [SLP0002]=SLP0002-X002-Y001 u

What a nice trip! Thank you for sharing. I really enjoyed the down to earth commentary, scenery and video editing. Scotland is so beautiful. We were there in 2018. One of the highlights of our 14 day trip to the UK, Scotland and Ireland was the Military Tattoo in Edinburgh. Totally worth going up to the castle and seeing that. Since you asked, the only thing I can think of that would help with the video is a remedy for stabilizing the footage. Not sure what you shoot with but maybe a GoPro would suffice.

Hi guys. I’m new to your channel. Just subscribed. I’m enjoying your virgin GoldWing tour. I’m on my third Wing. First was an ‘85 or ‘86, 1200 Aspencade. Second was a 2013 F6B, 1800. And my latest is a 2021 Tour DCT. All great bikes, but my latest is the best, although Honda could do a better job with the seat. Not very comfortable for the long haul. You were dodging potholes in episode one. I hit one on July 3rd that resulted in a bent front rim. Due to supply shortages, here it is, October 20th and I’m still waiting for a rim from Honda Canada. They can’t even give me a tentative delivery date. Consequently, I’ve lost a whole riding season. It sucks, but it is what it is. At least I can ride vicariously through the exploits of people like yourself. Enjoy your Wing. Arguably the best touring machine on the market. Not sure I would have anything else now as a bike to travel on, two up. I look forward to following on your new adventures.

Hello Dwight, thank you for your comment, and it's good to have you here. Yours is not the first comment I've read about the relative discomfort of the 2018+ seat. I've also seen and heard a few comments about the wind protection, luggage space and even helmet stowage being less good on the new Goldwing. Can you comment? I'm sure the engineering is superior on the new model but, to me, that doesn't count for much if the touring abilities have been diminished. I really would like to hear what your thoughts are. Not that I'm in the market for the new model.... Your struggles getting a new wheel sound hellish. I assume the delay is due to the global supply chain problems we hear so much about? I just watched another motovlogger riding that same patch of potholed road in Scotland - except that it is now freshly re-surfaced and glass-smooth!
@whatsupeh1

Thanks for responding to my comments. I bought the 2021 model due to the increased trunk capacity for that year. The small trunk on the earlier models was a deal breaker for me. And yes, I guess there is difference in wind protection on the 2018+ models, but it’s still more than adequate. I haven’t found it to be an issue. I added an F4 Customs windscreen to mine. It’s about 4” wider than stock and has a curve at the top. I don’t notice any difference in protection, but it does look better; seems to accentuate the style of the bike better. I do like the looks of previous models like yours, better than these newer ones. These are a joy to ride and you’ll get used to the slow speed handling. Won’t take you long. I haven’t tipped my 2021 over yet. I know it’s going to happen; not a question of if, but when. I tipped my F6B a few times and those tip-over bars did their job beautifully. The tip-over bars on the new ones are less substantial and I’m not in any hurry to test them. Fuel mileage on my new bike is better than my last one. I’m getting an average of 60 miles per imperial gallon on the highway. My F6B was getting about 55. The fuel tank is smaller on the new models, but with the increased mileage, the range is pretty much the same. 300 miles would be about the limit, which is plenty. I’m more than ready after a couple hours to get off and stretch my legs. My significant other would concur. And don’t be intimidated when it comes time to do maintenance. They’re actually pretty easy to work on, although certain chores can be quite time consuming. Like the air filter that’s tucked away in the heart of the bike. That chore took me a full day on my 2013 F6B. But once you know how things come apart like body panels, you won’t be as afraid to tackle all but the most intricate jobs. And doing things yourself will save you a tonne of money. Check out Cruiseman’s Garage on KZitem. He has a lot of how-to GoldWing repair videos that will take you through many jobs, step by step. Well, I’m rambling. Enjoy your new ride. You made a great choice.
@fbglife

Thank you for that reply Dwight! We're not in the market for a 2018+ model but that reduced luggage capacity in the trunk would be a deal breaker for us too. We're taking up every available inch of space on this bike as it is, so we'd not want to lose any. Next purchase needs to be a rack for the trunk. It's hard for me to imagine a more comfortable bike than my Goldwing but I must say I'd like to try out that front end suspension on the new model - the reviews I've watched on KZitem praise its riding qualities. You used the word 'intimidated' when mentioning maintenance - and that perfectly describes what I feel about this beast of a bike! I have become far less intimidated riding it, hopefully I'll also lose my fears of taking it apart :)
@whatsupeh1
Жыл бұрын
The trunk rack is rated for a maximum of 5 lbs.. So don’t expect to carry much extra on it. I’m sure it will carry more, but you risk cracking the trunk lid. This new rendition of the Wing is the best riding of the three I’ve owned. Probably the best handling too, although my F6B was pretty close, which would be much the same as yours. I think you’ll be very happy with what you have. You won’t need anything more. I bought a tow-behind trailer and we will be taking it with us on any long trips next season. That will take care of any luggage issues we may face. It’s not for everyone, but it is an option. I mentioned Cruiseman’s Garage. His KZitem channel is a great resource if you need to do anything mechanical on your bike. Happy trails.

@@whatsupeh1 We have found out that we need extra space rather than load carrying ability and figure that a luggage rack and roll-top bag will be what we need to carry bulky, but light, items such as our waterproofs and light jackets for wearing out in the evening, all that sort of stuff. All heavy items will be low down in the panniers. But I take your point about not overloading the trunk lid. When I started researching Goldwings one of the first places I found online was Cruiseman's Garage - and I learned a LOT from it!

Hi Guys, still watching your video, you mentioned a problem with fogging in the rain, I also notice that you have the screen vent closed. The screen vent is an after-market accessory designed to reduce fogging by directing air through the screen. If you play with the angle of the flap you can get some relief. There are also products available for use on acrylic that help with water dispersal, if you can't find it in motorcycle products then look under aviation products. As you now know the Rune is a cruiser version of the 1800 wing. The bad days are all part of the education and as you say it's all part of the learning curve. Thanks for taking the time to make the video, the Goldwing is a big bike, and like any bike it has it's eccentricities, but before you know it you will get the hang of it and one day in the not-too-distant future you will have to force yourself to remember to put a foot on the floor at traffic lights. Ride Safe.

Thanks for your comment Mr Guitar. Ahh, I assumed the vent was designed for cooling air. It hadn't occurred to me to use it to reduce fogging. Thank you for the advice, I'll be sure to open up the vent next time I'm fogged! I recently bought a bottle of Rainex for the screen and I can see how it makes the rain bead better. Maybe I'll try in on my visor next. It sure is a big bike but, as you say, I'm getting the hang of it now and I've noticed that I'm putting my foot down later and later at lights & junctions. I'm *almost* at the point where I'm beginning to ride it as I would a 'normal' bike !

My lenses have coatings that might get removed by products that don't 'know' about them and the Zeiss product is guaranteed not to cause damage.

@fbglife
Жыл бұрын
Hi Lee, thanks for the comment. Luggage space is good but maybe not as much as you'd imagine at first glance! For instance, the panniers aren't big enough to take a helmet and the trunk will only take our 2 helmets because they're modular and we can open the fronts to put them in like jigsaw puzzle pieces. I think a video is needed to explain that one properly! Having said that, we do use the helmet hangers when the trunk is full. We both travel light and we've yet to struggle with luggage capacity but we will buy a rack for the trunk as that will help enormously when we look to travel further afield and for longer. In a nutshell, we're content with the luggage capacity! Fuel economy is, well, it's always going to be worse than you'd like it to be. Our riding so far has almost always been 2-up and with a full luggage. My riding style with Sarah as pillion is 'sedate' - on Motorways/dual carriageways we're both happy to cruise at 65-70mph (above that wind noise and buffeting, particularly for the pillion, increases significantly) and the best mpg we've had so far is 50 miles to an Imperial gallon. That's good enough to plan fuel stops every 200 miles or so - and even with a bike as superbly comfortable as the Goldwing I'd like to be taking a short breather at that point anyway. You know, I thought I'd miss a 6th gear but I don't! I'm out of 1st after a few yards and then the next 4 gears are perfectly good. I've not yet found my left foot fishing for another gear to slip it in to, and with 70mph being around 3000rpm (I think!) I've not yet felt the bike needs to calm down or quieten down my going into a higher gear. I have quickly learned to really enjoy the languid style of riding the Goldwing encourages - but when you twist the right wrist the power is instant and smooooth! In the short time I've owned this bike I have become a Goldwing convert and advocate. Go for it, you'll both love it!

You're welcome Lee. I would never have considered a Goldwing if it were just for me, and this purchase really was inspired and driven by Sarah. That's OK though because she's now got a bike she's comfortable on (in fact, she's more than comfortable, she actively enjoys it) which means we both get to go off on journeys and holidays that we want to, in the way we want to. Another thing worth mentioning about the seat is the room it gives the rider, not just the pillion. Because of the design, with the step up from rider to pillion, the rider has their own exclusive space too! It's so refreshing to be able to move around in the seat - slide forward, slide back, lean forward, lean back - and for those movements to have zero impact on Sarah. I'm still getting used to being able change my riding position at will without having to ask Sarah if she's still OK back there! Oh, and Sarah has the freedom to move around all she wants and I don't notice or feel a thing through this big ol' bike! It might just be a effect of middle-age but I'm now riding much more, well, sensibly. I've found I've adapted my riding style to the Goldwing, and to now having a permanent pillion. I feel that I'm still a biker and I'm still very much on 2 wheels but it's just a different, but equally enjoyable, kind of riding. I never imagined it!
