It's cool the way that oval piston engine looks like a tiny V8.

Just imagine having the dimensions then extending the crank shaft and making it a v8… then add force induction for the wasted displacement that they couldn’t make up for when racing. 😅 I may have given them a milt mill dollar idea but it would save me the R&D

Those who mention rebores, these had cylinder liners. The liners were pressed out and new ones inserted along with a new set of std size pistons..
Actually the engine is exactly worked on like on a Wankel ,no milling needed, the rotor housing and rotors (cylinders and pistons ) are pulled and replaced ! But it would be interesting to see how the cylinders, pistons and rings were manufactured in the first place. After all Mister Honda started his company first by manufacturing cylinder rings for other companies, so Honda has a long history and is specialist in this field.

I'm not an Engineer and this is why I'm going to ask these question. How well or bad would it work if the oval pistons were 90 degrees from how they were in these bikes? How hard would it be to have 8 valves per cylinder? Would it need to have 2 connecting rods per piston? Would it be too wide and would the bike frame have to be lengthened to accommodate the engine? I wonder if modern materials would make this engine work better? Such an interesting engine.

I guess the square piston is off the drawing board for now... The concept development came about because Honda wanted more power but the rules of GP stated no more than 4 cylinders so an oval piston was developed with 8 valves per cylinder 8 conrods, it was in a way a V8. This got around the 4 cylinder regulation. The road versions at the time were very expensive, about $50,000 US, for a Japanese bike.
@creepingjesus5106

Liam Murphy Yep, and it still must be one of the most expensive 'production' bikes ever. iirc it was £37k over here, even the Bimota Tesi a few years later was about £25k depending on options. I'd have both without hesitation!

My thoughts as well, this engineer has not broken enough cast rings during installation. On the other hand, wiesco forged pistons come with rings so tough, I’ve twisted and bent old ones and they simply won’t break. Be careful when experimenting, They spring back to almost original shape.

This platform was originally developed in 1980-81, in anticipation of Honda's re-entry into Grand Prix road racing. The bike, with Freddie Spencer at the helm, was fast enough to hang with the factory two-strokes of Suzuki and Yamaha, but the engine wouldn't survive the entire race. The idea was scrapped in favour of a V-3 two-stroke that Freddie rode to the 500 CC GP championship in 1983.
This tecnology is 30 year old and i think had been failed due to 25 %more friction
