Thanks for posting this video. Your suggestion to loosen the filler plug before loosening the drain plug was spot on. Fluid change went well!

Barry's Workshop I easily add fluid through the dip stick tube as well so you do have an alternative. I use the same long narrow funnel with 2-3 reducing vinyl tubes and it flows very fast through the dip stick tube. Just an alternative in case you can't remove the filler bolt.

This video was very helpful. I was not able to locate the filler port. My Odyssey is a 2003 and may have had the transmission fix that utilizes the port. I used a plastic ketchup squeeze bottle and a small hose form the hardware store and filled through the dip stick. Didn't spill any fluid. I drained 3 quarts and filled with 3 quarts when I checked the level it was between the lines. Again thank you. The van has 130K. I bought it used with 98k. Knew nothing about this requirement on the Honda. Seems to run smoother now. Had to use a breaker bar to open the drain. The plug was coated with a heavy black sludge. Must have been fine shavings from the gears.

Great video thanks. The washer popped off the drain plug when I removed it. Unfortunately I didn't notice until I had refilled the system. Something to watch out for. My shop manual suggested that after I refill half the new fluid that I run the engine and work the trani thru all gears when adding new fluid. (Add a pint, work the gears, check oil level and repeat until at recommended level.) I put in about 2.5 qts and the fluid level was way above the fill line on the dip stick. That said I didn't need all 3 quarts.

Great video, Thanks! I could not reach the bolt to fill it like the video, as there was a hose & connector right above it. So I bought a bottle of Lucas tranny conditioner & poured it into a cup. I then cut the tip and cut a small hole on the bottom of the bottle. I inserted the tip of Lucas bottle into the tranny dip stick spout and then inserted the funnel tip into the hole I made on the bottom of the Lucas bottle. I poured the 3 quarts of tranny fluid & the Lucas conditioner in the funnel

It depend on the mileage your vehicle has. I'm not sure what the service interval for transmission fluid on a 2001 is but it's probably around every 60,000 to 75,000 miles. If your car has more miles than that and you're not sure when the last change was, then I'd do one. It's just normal maintenance.

It simplifies the process, but it's not a rule. It just makes a breather hole, though you can also pop the dipstick up. Some mechanics say that if you don't know for sure what went in the top, then you have to assume it's full of buckshot, so don't leave it open.
@crackertroy

Okay thanks for the video but I don’t think there’s a fill plug for an 03 EXL. There’s too much crap on top of it. I’m going to try to use a smaller funnel and fill it from the dipstick hole. The other two fill holes are just as small and they have some kind of transmission lines running through that are almost impossible to get to

One thing to keep in mind when you use ramps, YOU DON'T get all the fluid out. It's best on a flat drive way, that's how I did mine. I drove up on ramps broke open the drain plug and then drove off the ramps to get most of the fluid out....

After you changed it are you certain you added enough oil? With the vehicle running, and holding your foot on the brake don't let it move. Cycle it thru each of the gears then stopping back in park. With it still running go and remove the transmission oil dipstick and make sure it above the level. The only time I have ever had issue with a transmission not engaging after a fluid drain and fill was it actually wasn't full.

Yes, so what happens when something gets into your transmission it is ground up by all of the gears in your tranny. However all of those ground up rocks and etc. just sit in the transmissions fluid. when you drain your transmission fluid you are also getting rid of all of that ground up material that your transmission ate up.

Now you got to do it 5 more times or 10. That's some super dirty transmission oil. 3 quarts mixed with that old stuff is not really changing it. But I guess it will help. Though, you really need to get the rest of it out by repeating 5-10 more times to get it really clean. Because you only changed about 1/3 of the oil in the transmission. Lucky you have a drain plug pan. If you do that though, many trans can go bad since debris can get lodge in solenoids in or near the valve body, then not shift right after.

A lot of youtube mechanics are saying that you are draining and adding 3 quarts of transmission fluid on a 2001 Honda Oddyssey. The Honda parts counter told me I am draining and replacing 3.5 quartz, not 3 quarts. My 2003 Civic has a 3 quart transmission fluid change and my 2001 Oddyssey has a 3.5 Quart transmission fluid change.
@cgrscott
10 жыл бұрын
I noticed if I drain my Oddyssey transmission with only the front end of the vehicle elevated, three quarts of fluid comes out. If I drain my Oddyssey transmission while the vehicle is sitting level, around 3.5 quarts drain out. So replacing 3 quarts or 3.5 Quarts on your Oddyssey transmission might have everything to do with weather you drain the transmission with just the front end lifted or with both the front and rear ends lifted, or the with just the whole vehicle sitting level on the ground.
