What regulates the voltage? I tested the voltage output on a 7.5 HP and got over 20vdc! Does the OEM use zener diodes for regulation inside the rectifier?

It would have been helpful to have the multimeter in view when you tested the old rectifier, to better understand the results.

I have an 8 HP 2007 Honda. My rectifier went out too. What should my new one be rated for (50v 25amps)? How do I know I am buying the right one?

The power output from the 8hp Honda (BF8) is pretty low. Manual states 6 amps so anything rate above that would be over kill, or more robust. My cheap little rectifier is still going strong after 300hrs use.

If you are unsure buy an oem one. I have been living with the cheap modified rectifier and it is still working. How many years is that? Still charging my batteries. I only wanted a simple battery charging system without over thinking it. I am no electronics guru. This is what i have done, it is up to you what you make of it. Good luck

Using this video, I’ve done the exact same mod with the very same engine and it works great! Cheap easy fix. Thanks, bought 5 rectifiers of Amazon for £5

Sorry but you will either explode the battery or burn your charging coil - as you must include a voltage regulator as well as bridge rectifier! the charging coil's AC voltage goes up to 50V AC and the regulator's job is to keep it within 13.5-14.5V -

boatingisfunUK What you are saying is right for larger engines with a larger alternator output. All i have done is replace parts like for like. Bridge rectifier for another bridge rectifier. Smaller engines tend to have a simple charging coil and a bridge rectifier. There is no voltage regulator on this model because the output is so low. No exploding battery and no burnt charging coil after 4 years and 350 hrs use says it all. What do other viewers think?

I just converted my 1978 50 HP Mercury to a 50v 25 amp rectifier setup for Radio Shack @ $3.89. I went ahead and drilled a new hole in the aluminum mounting bracket and used the center hole in the rectifier to bolt to the aluminum mounting bracket and used it as a heat sink. I also used aluminum anti seize as a heat convector. This rectifier is way overrated for the output of this charging stator thus should last forever barring any short circuits

standard output for honda 5hp is 3.75 amps max u can upgrade with kit from honda to 6 amp but only 9.9 it appears but not the 5hp

what is the part number of the replacement rectifier? thanks

The one I used was just a generic one. Size was the factor not part no. Original service parts are 10 times the price.
