Michael W, as someone who completed his entire panel-beating apprenticeship at a Honda dealership down here in Melbourne, Australia from '92-'97, I wish that I had a dollar for every Honda antenna mast that I had to replace during those years!! And I just wanted to say that you did a great job with this D-I-Y video, keeping it succinct (unlike me here!) with the text guide & including all of the necessary information for "newbies" re: these types of automotive tasks without scaring them away from doing it themselves & letting the Honda dealerships rip them off for what is essentially an easy job.You made this video in your own time & then uploaded it for the benefit of others for no personal financial gain whatsoever. And for quite sometime after uploading it 5 years ago, you even replied to all of the questions that people in need of extra information asked you - absolute quality mate, respect for that too!

Just wanted to say that I was a bit worried about trying this myself however I simply went to Auto Zone bought a universal antenna mast kit. It cost me 22$ and I followed the instructions on the back of the package and I now have a working antenna again. I did have a bit of a problem getting the old mast out because it was broken off inside the shaft that it retracts into but once I was able to grab onto the old part it just took a slow firm tug to remove it fully and then it took a few trys to get the teeth to grab onto the gears but once it did it worked just as the package said it would. Piece of cake!! Oh by the way I used a set of hemostats to reach and grab onto the old antenna mast. Worked way better than trying to fish it out with a screwdriver, etc. It took a few try's to get a good hold on it but then it came right out. Good luck everyone and don't be scared to try. Happy Hondaing

Thanks. My antenna was making a grinding (stripped gear-like noise)I got it out and cleaned it up. it would not suck back in so I think the plastic cord was probably too worn down. I kept trying and finally in my futile attempts to reinsert the old one it snapped. Found a replacement online and now after seeing your video, am sure it will be pretty easy to insert it once it comes.

Also, a couple of quick suggestions for anyone when removing the silver, metal top nut of the aerial assembly base, which may save you a great deal of exasperation DURING the task & money for paintwork repairs AFTER the task! FIRST, tape the paintwork of the quarter panel (around the black plastic base of the aerial - maybe 5"/12.5 cm's outward from the base, including over the black base) with a couple of layers of masking tape (or even low-adhesive duct tape - or something similar that won't damage your paintwork when you remove it - if you have no masking tape on hand) to protect it from inflicting some serious scratches upon the paint, just in case you slip. And SECOND, rather than using a solitary blade screwdriver to remove the silver metal top nut from only the one grooved section (especially if it's never been removed before, & thus it's not only super-tight from the production line but has become even tougher to remove due to age), I would heavily suggest using a pair of bent long nose pliers which have small enough tips to fit within the 2 countersunk sections of the nut. That way, you are getting the extra power from "attacking" the nut from 2 opposite points with a tool that also offers extra control with its handles & you are therefore far less likely to slip, which can damage the top nut, the plastic base or worst of all, your paintwork. These pliers can be found very cheap on eBay & are a very handy tool to own for a number of other tasks.

Glad u liked the vid, hmm sounds like parts of ur mast have corroded to the top of the antenna tube (very common), the gears of the antenna motor are just skipping the teeth on the mast and thats why you can hear the clicking. Its very difficult to break the rust bond so just be forceful and rip the old mast out. Hope that helps

Thank you so much for the guide on how to do this! This video was invaluable to me replacing the power antenna on my 1993 Acura Integra LS. NOTE: I had broken pieces of antenna and track in my motor, so I had to completely remove it and remove metal cover on it that let me get to the rest of the antenna pieces. Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be =) The only PITA was removing trunk plastics. Be careful, don't snap your tabs!

I have a toyota camry and the antenna extends then makes a loud grinding noise. Are the teeth on the mast strip causing the noise and I just need to replace the mast like you did?

@betrapvideos hi, your going to have to go into your boot/trunk area, pull back the fabric and lining to get access to the antenna motor. U have to remove the antenna motor itself and open it up to remove the piece of cable. there will be a small nut at the bottom of the motor, unscew it and remove the motor...once u get it out u need to remove a few screws on the face of the motor so you can take the plastic plate off and gain access to stuck cable..it sounds more complicated than it is, gluck

the piece is called an "antenna mast", you might be able to buy it from your dealer, honda does sell replacement masts but other manufacturers only sell the full assembly, try ebay, they sell masts for all types of cars.

Turn your radio on, wait till the motor stops, then grip the actual antenna mast and try pulling it out (it doesnt matter if the antenna doesnt fully extended) in older cars, a small part of the antenna known as the retaining sleeve (u can see me push it down into the hole at 2.24) gets stuck in the hole and makes the job of removing the old antenna seem imossible no matter how hard u try. its a very common prob. the key here is to be forceful

well it depends on what car youve got. 1st remove the antenna nut then try get the old mast out , next, go into your boot area and remove/pull back the trim covering the motor until you can see the antenna motor, on the bottom of the motor there will be a nut or bracket, remove that nut, unplug all wires/cables that are attatched to the motor, then slowly take it out, installing the new one is reverse of removal

if you hear your motor running but the antenna doesnt move at all, more than likley the antenna cable (the white toothed cable) has broken off the antenna mast and is stuck in the motor, if thats the case ,you need to remove the motor from the car, open it up and get the broken cable out, but its a little more complicated than it sounds. hope that helps
