my grandfather bought me a new 87 trx250x in 1988 for $2700.00. I was 15 and remember trying to decide on this or a new red 89 trx250R? I thought to myself, I don't want to mix gas anymore . since I was tired of mixing it for my old 79 RM80 I had. Good times and good memories

HeyDude93gt, I bought my 1987 TRX 250X new in 1988. It was 'still in the shipping crate.' The dealer assembled it at no extra cost. I also bought a Cycle Country 42" sidewalk snowplow with tire chains from this same dealer, and he mounted the plow as well. They also gave me a free helmet if I signed up for their ATV rider safety course. All together, I think the entire package was just about $2700. I'm glad you have good memories of yours. At 57 years of age, I still have and ride my 250X on our farm property. And I still plow up to 4 or 5" of snow with it. I'm here looking at vids of a 2007 Honda TRX 400EX that I just bought from a relative who needed some cash. I told him I'd take good care of it, and it's here at the farm if he wanted to ride it.

I’ve got an identical 250x from 1987 but that thing won’t do wheelies for crap. I can hit rev limiter in first and drop the clutch and the front tires won’t go above my waist.

I bought my 87 TRX 250X Fourtrax ATV new in the spring of 1988. It was still in a dealer crate. I still have and ride it occasionally. I mostly use my Yamaha 350 Big Bear on our farm once or twice a week for fence repair, taking a couple hay bales out to the feeder, etc. To answer your question about the 250X Honda's speed, I had my brother following me in his truck on a straight blacktop road. He said I was at 53mph wide open. That was around 1990 with a stock air cooled 1987 TRX 250X. Faster than my 4x4 Big Bear and fast enough for me.

If you are saying the 300ex is older and chain driven your right. But being old dosnt matter when it's a honda because they last forever. And chain driven is a good thing If I had a say, then definitally get a 300 or 400, you wont regret it

You’re mistaken for the first 250x being the same as the 300ex, not the 250ex and 300ex. The 300 is a stroker motor and way out of the 250exs league.

@@TheJessicarabbit09 Stephanie and Matt, After owning my 87' TRX 250X since new from the dealer in 1988, I can say I have a couple of indentations in my right shin from that damn kick starter, lol! I still ride it occasionally on our farm, but nothing like I used to with deep mud holes, jumping everything in sight, and flat out ripping up fields and dirt roads. Just a fair weather trail rider these days. I use my Yamaha 350 Big Bear mostly for mending the pasture fences, taking a couple hay bales to the horses feeder ring, taking a few supplies up to our cabin in the woods. I'm kind of backwards when it comes to light snow plowing. The plow is on my 2 wheel drive 250X while my 4 wheel drive 350 Big Bear doesn't have a plow mount on it. I plan on changing that..... maybe soon as winter is almost here!

Hey my grandpa got my dad one of these when he was 17 and it sat in the barn out there about 30 years and me and my dad loaded it up on the trailer and took it home and worked on it and we got it running again I've had it for the past 3 years I'm 15 now and I love this four-wheeler couldn't trade it for anything. But now it's having trouble idling like the idol screw isn't working and it'll die if you don't give it gas and it's running hot anybody know what it might be? We think it might be the cdi box like it's firing at the wrong time.

Yea I have the same one and it has trouble idling once it’s warmed up, it idles ok but when it’s cold it never idles. it’s a great bike and all I just hate the kickstart and how it never idles for a cold start.

@@josephmarchino827 It's really cool that you still have the quad in the family. I know this was a year ago, but if you're still having the idle issue, and your carb is totally clean and adjusted, check your intake valve clearance. The intake valves tend to wear on these Honda motors (make sure to keep the air filter clean), and the clearance will tighten up. Then the valve doesn't seal completely and you lose a little compression (causing it to die at idle). The motors are so reliable, no one ever checks the valve clearance! Also, adjust your cam chain tension while you are at it!
@josephmarchino827

@@TLG84 thank you I appreciate the advice a couple months ago I pulled it out of the shed (it sat for about a year and a half before we did anything else to it) and got it all cleaned up I decided to try to just buy a brand new carburator and that seemed to do the trick so far it's been running good. I restored the plastic best I could and looks the best it has in a long time, love that bike.
