We are currently half way through 100 Easy Lessons and we LOVE it. My son is 6.5 and he has gained SO much confidence reading. When we were at lesson 20ish he thought he could only read in 100 Easy Lessons, he didn't realize he could read in other books as well 😂😂 that's when I busted out the Bob books and that's when it clicked for him.

My oldest loved TYCTR so much that I bought alpha phonics just so that she could keep doing reading lessons with me-She finished TYCR a year ago and reads so well now- I’m using TYCR with my 4.5 year old twins now and they love it and giggle at the stories. I think the sibling rivalry helps, they love the one on one time with me (I have four too!) thanks for this review! Doing TGTB along with Alpha this year for my first grader and your video helped me understand alpha phonics better!

We’ve used Well Trained Mind, which reminds me of 100 Easy Lessons. Easy is for sure not the right name for it. Your right. Teaching reading takes work. But any Mom can totally do, with God’s patience.

I wish I would have seen this sooner. After tears from both my son and I we gave up on 100 easy lessons somewhere in the 40s.. we will be using the good and the beautiful too, it's colorful and fun! I never even considered breaking a lesson up over multiple days. #firsttimer thanks for the video!!

As a mom who has only used AlphaPhonics, this is neat! I know I have two versions of it.. I love the spiral one tenfold better than the other one that is bound. The reason why I liked it is because my kids would only memorize words in beginner reader books and not actually learn how to read! It was so annoying! Ok listening to it all now! lol I’ll comment more!

I’m glad you mentioned the recommendation for the Good and the Beautiful, we might look into that. Been going slowly (plus supplementing library books and fun reading games / apps) through 100 lessons, we’re at about lesson 70 with my 6 year old, and she’s willing to keep doing it but I can tell we’re both kinda done. 🤣 So, researching what’s next.

Thank you for the information 🙂 We're using Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons too! It says the lessons are about 20 minutes...we get through one lesson in probably 5-10 minutes. I'm wondering if I'm going through the lessons to quickly?? I also tend to want to push my kids to the next level and would do well to listen when they say they're done. Good reminder! Thank you! 👍☺️

If your kiddos are completing it in 5-10minutes that is awesome the lessons do get longer and more tedious so keep it fun and light and if they finish quickly than wonderful. Your doing a great job mama keep it up.

Thanks so much for this! I'm a nanny to two little girls (now 7 & almost 5). I started reading lessons with 100 Easy Lessons with the older one when she was about 4ish (repeatedly checked out from the library). Our main challenge with her is that she had a rather serious speech impediment that made sounding things out very frustrating because she wasn't able to copy letter/letter blend sounds intelligibly. And (of course) free speech evaluation through her school wasn't available until pre-k, and then actual speech therapy didn't start until kindergarten the following year. We had some good successes with 100 Easy Lessons though. With the younger one, I'm starting with Alphaphonics. She's been working her way through the alphabet at preschool ( and now pre-k), but is still having trouble blending sounds when we're working at home. The writing practice has been good for her though, I think (we use pre-cursive letter practice - my previous nanny family was European and pre-cursive was the mode of letter writing at both the German and French schools, and I found I prefer it as well for early learners). It was really great to hear your pro's and con's in a side by side comparison. Thanks so much for the insight of your experience.

I used 100 easy lessons for an older child over the summer who would have entered 2nd grade not reading. I have the second part, which will take her from a 2nd grade to 3rd grade in 90 lessons if virtual learning doesn't cut it the first semester of public school 2nd grade.

Love alpha phobic and have used it for many years. Instead of giving the child the whole page I use a white board to write each word. It helps so the child does not become overwhelmed.

Thanks for this video! I'm curious; if you love The Good and the Beautiful, why not just start with that at pre-K? Isn't it a complete enough system to teach your kids to read without using the two other programs? We are currently using level 1 for my older child (I had already taught her quite a bit before we discovered the Good and the Beautiful), but it seems really complete; like if that style works for you, then it would be all you need. I was looking at Alpha-Phonics, but honestly it looks so bleak and unengaging for little kids.
@PlanPrepPray

Yes the good and the beautiful is very complete. Unfortunately it does not always work for all my children when it comes to teaching how to read. For my daughter she enjoyed the activities but got distracted at times so the plan nature of alpha phonics worked best for her until we transitioned back to TG&TB. For my son he needed some wins which worked best with 100 Easy Lessons and then we where able to transition back to TG&TB. So it depends on your child but so far with my current beginning reader we are doing TG&TB.

@@PlanPrepPray That makes sense. We discovered The Good and The Beautiful when my daughter was already at Level 1, so I wasn't sure if that was a good one for beginning reading with. I kind of just winged it in teaching her to read, based on how my mom taught me. I didn't even know about BOB Books then (wish I had!), and just wrote her little stories with words she could sound out, and it grew from there. Now I am looking for something simple for my brother and his wife to teach their daughter. They really don't like homeschooling, but are being forced to by the whole covid situation. I've been teaching their daughter to read for the last month or so, but they are leaving the area soon, and will be on their own again. I'm leaning towards recommending the "4 Weeks to Read" program by Learning Dynamics to them. I like that it's scripted for the parent, divided into manageable little lessons, and seems fun and engaging and not too overwhelming for the kid.

For Alpha Phonics do you go straight through everyday. Since it goes to a third grade level About lesson would a Kindergartener get through, 1st grader, second grader etc? 100 easy lessons was just too much for us. TGATB is great but id like a bit more to reinforce Phonics

We did 15-20min every day. Sometimes less, depending on the day. Because there was no expectation to finish by the end of the year, my goal was to not make it a battle, so we set a timer and stopped when the timer said to stop.

Do either of these teach all the sounds a letter makes at the same time or does it break it down? Like “a” makes four sounds and kid’s brains can absorb all four at the same time, but almost all phonics programs and public school teach the sounds at different times.

No silly questions. Its a reading program so it doesn't teach grammar of any other Language Arts principals besides reading. So no I wouldn't consider it a full language arts curriculum.

It has worked brilliantly for my 4th child, I taught my other three on different programmes but I feel there were gaps and I strongly dislike the use of flash cards and the term sight words. Alpha phonics is so fantastically simple and is thorough in teaching all the digraph sounds and I use the book daily for cementing copy and sound work. My son is now just tuned 5 and is amazed at reading, any book, we started him on this at 3 1/2 and we have done the book about 5 x . Every day we do a page and then the writing work, sounds, creative writing and the other subjects. So basically we just keep using Alpha phonics every day for 5 mins to make sure it’s totally concrete x

I homeschooled 6 children and used this book for each of them. I found another great book to help them learn to sit for the lessons and also to build the skills needed to begin reading. It’s called Getting Ready to Read by Julie Shaffer. It works hand in hand with this book.
