Great review Nolan. I have a channel that deals with firewood but stopped posting about 6 months ago. I’m in that third group where I’m so worried about everything being right that I just give up. I’m going to take the class and use your link and maybe start a new channel using just my name and do some Vlog work. The creative side of this stuff just gets me so excited. Thanks for sharing your experience. I’ll be tagging along here watching you grow.

I did the course as well. Mostly I agree with you. I felt the second video was a bit hard - as there was almost no feedback anymore within the peer group. Great video. Keep it up! 👏👏

I did the same thing with getting sucked into the youtube vortex of content creators, learned a years worth of knowledge on cameras and lenses and settings and lighting and CLOG and color grading.. and invested in too much off the bat. Now I get stuck in my head EASILY, and am finding myself having to start the process of letting all that stuff go that I learned, stop watching those things at least for a while, and really get back into the nitty gritty of NOT CARING about any "rules" or settings, or what other people think. Nice review man! Keep it up!

Thanks so much. It's so tough to get out of ones own head. I struggle with it constantly. What I wound up getting out of Casey's course was not what I thought I would. I've heard critiques that there isn't enough technical stuff and I guess that is fair if that's what someone is after. But I think for me it was a bit of a blessing that the focus wasn't on that stuff. The course reminded me to lighten up and have fun with it, I think that is what i needed more than anything.

Well said Nolan, I totally agree with you. What Casey's gave us in the lesson is very valuable as well as our peer comments. If we have good peers like our group then we are lucky. I can't imagine if you get in a quiet group because I've seen people complains about their peers. I guess we're lucky! Cheers!

totally agree. It does sound like some people felt like there wasn't enough feedback. I wonder about if they had reshuffled the groups for second project and put the people who completed the first assignment in a class we other people that were hitting the deadlines.

KZitem suggested me this video of yours after I’ve watch the recent upload of Casey. (I used to see all of his videos when he was in NY and it was a bit weird to see actual content in NY after 2-3 years of absence). But to get back to your title, thank you for sharing your experience with us. I was curious to see or hear from somebody who would take the classes. I’m not into video filming or editing (I watch them 🙂) but I would have been interested to pay for a short version of the class. Meaning, technical aspect aside, the creative process would have been interesting to see.

I really enjoyed this video. I've been thinking about the course and I guess I should have signed up when it first was announced. I have a niche subject for my youtube channel and it's going well but I recognise I'm still a beginner and could do much better with some guidance. Thanks for sharing. Neil

I was also in the class. I was enthusiastic about the peer aspect, but I felt like the reviews ended up being compared to Casey instead of commentary on our own vision. I set aside a month to focus & I found that to be helpful… but I was disappointed that Casey didn’t show up in any way. But in the end, I’m glad I did it. Monthly needs to work on their uploading, though. I didn’t like having to upload an “unfinished video” to my KZitem channel.

yeah, I think I definitely lucked out with my peer group. They were very generous with feedback. That aspect is a crap shoot a guess. I agree that setting the time aside is maybe the most valuable thing. I will say that I worked harder and focused more in this class than I have in online course that didn't have deadlines.

I definitely got my moneys worth. And if you are a fan it’s also just interesting to see him work. I found how refreshing how much he focusing on story rather than just saying that whole obsessing lenses and ND filters (which I’m prone to). But it’s definitely some money so I’d say go for it the amount isn’t too bad a shock to the system. You can always catch it next round.

It's funny, every one of the reviews I have watched recommended the course, but one complained about the work.... not too unlike your mention of the team buildy thingy. But knowing Casey and his commitment he made to the daily vlog and then a few glimpses into his personal life being consumed by the edit. His tattoo about working hard, why would anyone think the course would be "how to edit anything in 5 minutes". I bet the course is a ton of real work.
@nolannatashaTV
2 жыл бұрын
I was quite skeptical about the format at first. Assuming the monthly thing is just a cleaver trick to encourage registration since it creates deadlines to register or you have to wait for the next round (and I’m sure it does have that effect). But for me it was useful to be cramming it all into a small time frame with deadlines cause it forces you to really focus on what you are making. That said, for someone with a busy schedule, I could see that the format might be a challenge, if you can’t hit the deadlines then you miss out on the feedback. But for me the deadlines and amount of work helped focus me.
@ACoustaDC
2 жыл бұрын
@@nolannatashaTV Well you see how the deadline itself, was similar to his self-imposition of a daily vlog.... Having to put out a story each day and the expectation he set was very high quality wise. Anyway, good review. and I like the vid. Don't let perfection be the enemy of good... again.

Did you learn storytelling?
@nolannatashaTV
2 жыл бұрын
I come from a storytelling background as a writer, but I think what the course does really well is help you think about storytelling with a camera specially. So I would say, yes. The focus is much more on finding stories and getting them across through video than it is about lightning or other more technical aspects of filmmaking. There is a real focus on how to identify, break down and stitch together story elements both when shooting and during the edit.
