Ive actually made 2.5 gallon feeders that fit right inside the hives now. A little smaller, but they work great!

@joeyoliver579

I actually agree, but Its pretty important to get the holes as consistent as possible. If they are "unbalanced" you'll lose vacuum and the sugar water will just drain away. The vacuum is what makes it all work...

I made feeder Saturday, mixed sugar water Sunday afternoon and placed out in yard Sunday afternoon. It is now Tuesday morning about 10:30 and the bees haven't found my feeder. Its only about 100 feet from hive. October 1, 2019. How can I get them to find the hive. I stood beside the feeder and watched them come and go. They don't pay me any attention. Feeder is about 100 feet from hives. Could it be that my bucket is black and they don't like black?
@joeyoliver579

Probably because they are feeding on nectar. If there is a nectar flow on, they will not touch sugar water.

Hi Joey..Great quality video..Thanks for sharing. My question is regarding the left over syrup. As the liquid level drops below the drill holes at 2 1/4 ", wont that leave ALOT of syrup left that the bees cannot access? . If you did talk about it and I missed it, I am sorry.
@joeyoliver579

It does leave a little bit, yes. But it easily used in your next batch and candy boards if you make them. If there is any waste, its a very small amount. Thanks for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it :)

Thanks! I watch Davids videos too. Ive learned a lot from him. I'm going to do a follow up video in a few weeks that talks about different open feeding methods. They are easy, and they work :) Thanks for watching and commenting :) Hopefully Ill be making a new video this weekend on how to do an easy split.

I am just getting into bees this summer. Have my layens hive almost ready to set in my backyard. Need a water source for it and the buckets seem perfect. Can this be used for the H2O source?
@joeyoliver579

Kerry, thanks for the question. Congratulations on getting bees! Its one of the best things Ive ever done :) As far as a water source goes, it could definitely work, but you'll have to monitor closely. the bees can take water down fairly quickly. for me, I live about 150 miles form my hives and I can only check them on the weekends. Fortunately I have lots of water close to my hives. But keep in mind, bees can/will fly a few miles to get the necessary resources they need to survive. These buckets are definitely a good backup though. good luck with your new hobby! You're going to love it!

Thank you. All my hives survived the winter and Im ready to get started this year! I have had some pollen substitute out, but wither Elm or red Maple has begun to bloom so they are ignoring the substitute. This weekend Ill do my first real hive check of the year and possibly introduce some sugar water even thought they have plenty honey. Im hoping the sugar will trigger the queens to pick up her pace in laying :) Ill be making a new video soon :) This again!

How do u prevent water from leaking from the lid!
@joeyoliver579

Usually, the buckets are pretty air tight, plus the vacuum thats created from the sugar helps out. Plus they drink the sugar water faster than it would drain out.

This year Im using a 35 gallon trash can. I fill the can with sugar water and lay a few inches of hay/straw on top for the bees to land on. So far is much more efficient. Thanks for commenting and watching :)

@@joeyoliver579 great! so just fill 35 gallon plastic trash can and put few inches of straw on top? ill try it
@joeyoliver579

@@natserog I mix 25 pounds of sugar in four 5 gallon buckets, then pour it in the trash can. Add the additional water, then put the straw on top ( a few inches) I have 12 hives and that lasts about 6 days. Much easier
@joeyoliver579
5 жыл бұрын
@@natserog OH! put a couple boards across the top of the trash can and put the lid on the boards with a rock on top. This gives the bees access to the sugar water, and prohibits debris from falling in the sugar water. I have two cans and swap them out every week. Easy.

What is the mix ratio for the water / sugar mixture?

1:1 by weight. 1 gallon of water (approx. 8.3 lbs) to 8 lbs of sure dissolved. The feeding frenzy starts at 10:50...

At HD and Lowes, they have them right with the buckets...just ask one of the worker people. Lowes is easily more consistent than HD. I just happened to be in HD when I thought of this. Otherwise I would have bought them at HD. ANY five gallon bucket lid will fit. Its a standard size. Wally World is definitely cheaper. Thanks for your comment :)

Thanks for the quick reply. the lowes bucket does not have the crosshatch around the bucket for the individual little reservoirs. I bought the lid that you can unscrew, it leaks.

Ill double check mine from Lowes this weekend, but any 5 gallon bucket lid should work. Walmart is the cheapest bay far
@jsauerii

Walmart has the correct buckets in most places and in various colors. Their lids do not however have the rubber o-ring gaskets. I grabbed those at a true value. The lids with no o-rings do leak out and can waste most of your syrup.
@eworthen843

I was just going to ask about the lids. I made my bucket last night, and the second I turned it upside down, all the water immediately began to drain out. Even though my Home Depot bucket says leak proof, it definitely is not. I shall track down a lid with an 0-ring. Thanks!

This method does not work. Yes, the water will flow out from the holes initially, as the water is leaking out, a partial vacuum forms between the bucket and the surface of the water, hence, the initial outflow will stop as the pressure outside the bucket is greater than the inside
@joeyoliver579

They work just fine, but Ive come to learn this isn't the best method of feeding. Thanks for watching!

It works...it has draw-backs. It's messy. Occasionally when there are great swings in atmospheric pressure (I guess)it will blurp a little. Hence the mess. I use it, in addition to reservoirs inside the hive.
