Funny story about the success of this movie. It came out the same summer as Ghostbusters 2. Moranis was being interviewed on David Letterman. Lettterman was mocking the movie (based on the commercials showing Moranis almost eating his kid in a spoonful of Cheerios) calling it "Honey I Ate the Kids". He was asking Moranis if he got any profit-sharing on Ghostbusters 2. Moranis said "no" but said sarcastically "But I got a HUGE share of HIStK". Letterman just laughed "Good luck with that". The joke was on him! HIStK outgrossed Ghostbusters 2 so Moranis got more money than he would have from Ghostbusters!

. . . . . It barely generated more than Ghostbusters 2. And I doubt it had even a tiny fraction of the merch generated (probably close to zero, especially compared to Ghostbusters 2 with likely huge numbers). Still would have made more than his joke implied, but I doubt he made anywhere near as much as a good deal on Ghostbusters 2 would have given him.

@@wyterabitt2149 Sure it would. Moranis was the undisputed star of HIStK. In GB2, he'd be behind Murray, Ackroyd, Ramis, Hudson, and probably Weaver and Potts. Even if HIStK had made half what GB2 had profit-sharing would work out better for Moranis as the sole "big name" in the credits. And it's not like there were Lewis Tulley action figures...

A classic 80's "kids as adventure heroes" movies. Pure fun and exciting for kids, teens, and even young adults to watch. The kids were relatable and we could put ourselves in their places. I feel like if it were redone today, it would be made more horrific and life threatening, focusing more on spectacular special effects with grotesque bugs, and less about the way the kids bonded together. An interesting thing about the movie is that it was filmed at Churubusco Studios in Mexico City.

The thing that sells the tiny world is all the little things that you wouldn't normally think about but of course would be all over the floor like bits of hair and bits of plastic and screws. They put a crazy amount of work into getting the sets looking right and the scale of the sets. Still holds up perfectly because they rarely used CGI. The sets are completely practical so it hasn't aged at all. It could've been made today. Unfortunately they are making a series, I think, based on the movie that should be coming out soon because nothing is sacred.

I'm 28 and this was a huge movie in our household too, growing up. I seem to recall that they even created a theme park experience at Disneyland back in the early 90s so kids could walk through and feel like they were tiny amidst huge blades of grass and bugs! I think a lot of kids born in the early to mid 90s, who, like me, would've started watching kids movies in the late 90s/ early 2000s, still grew up on these 'older' movies. So glad we didn't have to grow up on sub-par Disney like 'Frozen' or endless Marvel movies - kid's movies now just don't have that wholesome, classic feel with classic animation or traditional, animatronic effects and the music just doesn't compare with the scores and songs featured in the 80s and 90s - never again will we hear a classic song like 'Can You Feel The Love Tonight' or scores like E.T.

They had a lot of the props at universal in Orlando back in the early 90s. My sister and I got to take pictures on the bee in front of a green screen. She got to sit on top while I was the one hanging off the side. Was a memorable picture. I remember we were smiling as you do in pictures but the guy taking the picture kept telling us we were supposed to be terrified and had us screaming as he took the pic.

I saw it in the theater when it came out. It was a pretty big deal and I remember a prime time special on TV that did a 'behind the scenes' take for the special effects. I really enjoyed it, but I don't recall the sequels much.

I wore out this VHS tape back in the day. The second one, Honey I Blew Up the Kid, is trash, but the third one Honey We Shrunk Ourselves is a guilty pleasure. It's also where I learned that bananas have a lot of potassium, so who says movies aren't educational.

If you want to see a good movie with Rick Moranis in it, watch the movie Parenthood (1989) featuring director Ron Howard who also directed Apollo 13. The movie also features comic Steve Martin, Mary Steenburgen (of Back to the Future Part 3), Jason Robarts (Brooks in Shawshank Redemption), and a young Keanu Reeves. It's a movie about the trials, tribulations and triumphs of being a parent of toddlers to adults.

I cried and wept and still do over the Ant sacrificing himself so they could continue. That was heartbreaking to me
