Spent a week on Midway in 1971. Was stationed at Hickam AFB as a Jet Engine Tech and was sent to work on an AC130 Gunship that lost an engine…1st engine we got was bad the 2nd did the trick. Most memorable part was the flight back to Oahu….caught a flight/hop back on Navy C117 a souped up version of the C47. Great crew and time 11.5 hours to Barbers Point Navel station steaks and backed potatoes for eats a wonderful time and memories I will never forget.😎🇺🇸

In 1985 PanAm, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their first trans Pacific flight, flew a 747-100 to recreate the original flight sectors. We flew from San Francisco to Pearl to Midway to Wake to Guam to Manilla. Most memorable flight ever. It took about 30 hrs to do it all. Never Forget.

I spent a little over a year stationed out there in the late 70's. Great diving. We had 2 flights a week that brought in mail and and swapped people. At least 3 flights, C141 took bird hits on the way out. It was the worst thing that could happen when it was finally your day to get off the rock. It's my Goldilocks story. Spent 15 months there. It was too small. Went to Hawaii next for school. It was too big. Got stationed in Guam. It was just right. Haha

Awesome vid, was wondering how much it's changed since last being there in 2001. Was scheduled to fly an early OEF sortie and ended up being recut to AIREVAC a patient off of Midway, super late night/early morning arrival so minimal birds. All pretty smooth up until we tried cranking #2 to depart and sheared the starter shaft... Got stuck there for a week while waiting for a part & MX team (patient made it out on a P-3). Outrigger was still operating an Ecotourism resort, while the island was managed by Phoenix Corp. I believe. Think Aloha was still flying out there as well. The unplanned stay turned out pretty well, met some great folks, and even got some catch and release fishing in. Also "met" the two 95lb Uluas that frequented the harbor/pier. Was hoping to get back there at some point but guess it all shutdown a few years later (2003/2004?). Thank goodness it's still maintained for diverts!

Another photo of a C-47 in well maintained and looking really nice. The spot you parked on...A C135 headed state side, early evening had maintenace issues. It was carrying remains back to the states. The bodies had to be stored in the chow hall freezer. Next morning the plane was gone. One othe photo of a " gooney bird" just slowly gliding with just enough wind it was hovering over my head. Took a great photo. I really enjoyed my time there. We returned to our back in Georgia.

i knew a guy who repaired the xray equipment at an airport in hawaii. He would sometimes talk about working on midway in the 80's and he sounded like he really enjoyed it. His job was some kind of electronic tech working for the civilian contractor that won the bid after the navy pulled out. A few years ago i ran across a video and i said to myself that sounds like Mike. Sure enough, it was. I had no idea he was such an electronics guru. His company set up a cell phone network on the island amongst other things to keep the airport electronics operational. If anyone is interested on seeing what it was like there when a private contractor managed the island, his video is titled: Midway Island - A Battle Lost To U.S. Fish And Wildlife Service
