Balzac wrote great novels, with mainly the subject of money as leitmotiv. Being Père Goriot and Eugénie Grandet the ones we all have read (in France at least), one could say it also deals about ambition, as can be seen in the Comédie Humaine cycle. Should add human greediness as logically, another of his recurrent matters? - never mind, it's an easy reading that leaves its footprint. Although did not like so much The Chouans, so this one wouldn't recommend it. It's plot is a bit more about let's say, adventures, and what's behind does not matter at all, nowadays. With Stendhal, Flaubert, Zola and Maupassant Balzac gets into the glorious quintet of French Classics. Where Victor Hugo has to be added, be it only because of Les Miserables. These French writers have gone far beyond our frontiers, because of their great pictures about France in 19th century. Wonderful writers all of them. Is there someone not having read Le Rouge et le Noir or Madame Bovary or Nana? Then be quick to get into, they're passionating readings. And Maupassant short stories are among the best you can read, more even if you like dark humour ones. 📖👍🆗❤️😍

Recently finished reading Illusions Perdues. Fantastic novel. There is a heavy emphasis on class, nobility, the 'de' particle, and ambition, which I reckon was emblematic of French society after the revolution and the first empire.
