The changing of the guard has always been a draw for tourists visiting Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. However, starting Monday Taiwan will withdraw its military honor guard. The guards will no longer stand sentry or perform drills in front of the hall’s main statue of Chiang Kai-shek. They will be relocated to Democracy Boulevard, in front of the memorial hall. According to Academia Historica President Chen Yi-shen, the move helps to end the veneration of a former dictator.

This is an initial step in transitional justice. Actually it has been a very long journey. Rifle drills and things like that may have some tourism value, but some foreign visitors might think it strange, wondering why we’re venerating a former dictator. But the honor guard drills at Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall are just ceremonial. The main problem is the existence of the memorial space itself. We hope that people can view this problem with a calm and rational mindset, in light of developments over the past 20, 30 years.
The R.O.C. Honor Guard has performed drills at the hall since it opened in 1980. Similar ceremonies take place at Cihu Mausoleum, Daxi Mausoleum, and Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall.
