Rosie L. Redding was a Lamokin Village resident who served as a community crossing guard, protecting three generations of children as they crossed the streets of 7th and Central Avenue bound for The Booker T. Washington School and Fredrick Douglas School in Chester, Pennsylvania. Decked out in her regal blue uniform, Redding ensured the safety of hundreds of children during her daily watch. On Friday April 26, 2024, dozens of those children returned to say thank you. The Chester Housing Authority unveiled a large wall display in her honor at The Booker T. Washington Community Center at 611 Central Avenue. The City of Chester also honored Redding’s historic post location with an installation of her name on the city street sign. This is a Building Community special presentation hosted by CHA Executive Director Steve Fischer.
