I've been to shows in Bushwick and Ridgewood for the longest, the first time I can remember was Defeated Sanity at the original Silent Barn almost a decade ago. My friend calls the two neighborhoods that boarder Brooklyn and Queens; "Ridgewick" and occasionally "Bushridge" for a laugh. We'd meet around Weirfield street and I'd always pass by the building that would become TV Eye when it was just an inconspicuous, seemingly unoccupied space no one felt like paying the exorbitant rent to.
Someone eventually coughed up the cheese and turned the place into a bar that pays homage to Iggy Pop and the gritty side of 70s Rock/Punk. It's in the bar's name, borrowed from Iggy Pop's 1977 live album of the same name. It's good to have new places to gather for functions, especially after two years of the world being ravaged by the pandemic. After last seeing Ammo back in 2019, with it now somewhat safer to go out and do shit, I came out to the show primarily to see them.
I'd heard of Subversive Rite over the years and had seen them on flyers as well as Facebook events a lot, but I was either preoccupied with the heavier side of Hardcore, Powerviolence, and Future Funk/Vaporwave at the time. I hadn't gotten into too many Punk/Hardcore bands after burning myself out on the 70s and 80s stuff all throughout junior high school into sophomore year of high school. I've learned to spread my attention around better, lest I miss out on something cool.
Something cool like Subversive Rite. Formed in 2016 out of New York, they've become a prominent and leading band in the Hardcore Punk movement in New York and New Jersey, with a loyal fanbase that made that possible. My friend I usually attend these functions with put me onto them and it sounded really good, it fit the aesthetic and art that first caught my attention. It was Hardcore Punk with a bit of Metal in there, which is usually winning a combination in my opinion. They definitely appreciate the finer things, with their singer rocking a Possessed Seven Churches shirt and their drummer rocking a Carass short sleeve.
Clearly they were missed during the time they hadn't been performing due to the ongoing health crisis. It's never easy filming while people are raging but I did my best. The energy in that room had been pent up since 2019, so the band and audience were equally explosive. Try and go see them next time they're booked in the city. With the world as it is, you can never know what's going to happen next, so appreciate the good things in life while they're available to us in the now.
They're another band with a limited internet presence, so listen to them here, and check out the discogs page for Subversive Rite:
