I used to use nothing but metal hooks, then switched to Furls (metal tip) and used them for a long time. Then I discovered Prym and never dreamed I would love a plastic hook. I have NO problem crocheting with them at all with ANY type of yarn, but I don't crochet as tight as it appears you do. I'm not super "loose", but not really tight. But THEN I found the Yarnology ones at Hobby Lobby and bought the 5.5mm (because for some reason Prym does NOT make a 5.5mm) and I realized they are basically the same! I have been using Prym for about 3 years now and they don't slow me down a bit! My daughter told me about 2 months ago that she is pregnant with TRIPLETS (!!!), so over the past 5 weeks I have now crocheted 12 baby blankets using all kinds of different stitches.

i use prym too all sizes, i didnt like it much from the start but once i started using more i realise two things, No.1, the more you use the hook, the more it slides easily through the yarn, No.2 , ii give it a good rub with a dry smooth napkin before i start my project and it works perfectly smooth

I have both the Prym and Yarnology hooks and love them both. I use my Prym hooks more simply because that white shank allows me to see the stitch better, especially for the darker yarns. The 6 and 6.5 Yarnology hooks have a dark shank and you can’t see the stitches well because of that. The white of the Prym just works better!

I just got sets of Prym hooks from Walmart, of all places, for really good prices. They have a set of E,G,7,H and J for $19.00 These are mm sizes 3.5,4.0,4.5,5.0 and 6.0. They have a second set of the larger hooks for 20.69. They include sizes 7mm, L,M,N and O, mm sizes 7.0, 8.0,9.0,10.0 and 12.0. My step daughter (who is 35 yrs old) wants to make herself a granny square cardigan and doesn't have the hooks I gave her when she was 12 years old and first learned to crochet. So it's going to be an early birthday present for her! I ordered them Sunday or Monday, and they are due to arrive today.

When I first got back into crocheting, all I had was the boyd hooks, and I struggled. Then I bought a Prym hook, and the first thing I tried using it on was cotton. Bad choice. I use them on slippier yarns like velvet, and they are the Bomb!. Then I tried yarnology hooks and loved them too. My favorite hooks are the Clover hooks. I can use them on about any yarn and they seem to work the best overall. Thank you so much for all of your reviews, they really help!

First of all: yes, yarntopia is ridiculously soft! it is nuts how soft it is. I have felt the yarnology hooks but, honestly, to the touch they didn't feel NEARLY as smooth as the Prym hooks. I am not normally a plastic hook lover. In fact, the only plastic hooks I will use are for size 7mm and up. Everything 6.5mm and below, I am strictly a Tulip Etimo girl. The smoothest metal EVER plus an ergonomic grip so I can hold the hook very lightly in my hand. The only hook that I can crochet ALL DAY with without pain in my hands. I used to have Clover Amour hooks for my large size hooks. They are pretty good. But I HATE that flat thumb rest. My thumb cramps up so quickly with that because that isn't ergonomic, honestly. I tried the streamlined Furls hooks when they came out and hated them, though they were beautiful. When the streamlined swirls came out, I was reluctant but I gave them a try. I REALLY like them for many projects. I have them in size 7mm to 10mm. I wish they had a 12mm too. They are quite smooth. Not tulip etimo smooth, but still smooth. And they are comfy in the hand, even if they are a bit heavier than my norm. They are comfy but not as all day comfy as my Tulips. But, again, I use them when I need sizes that my Tulips don't come in. And the resin hooks are wonderful for what they are. In a perfect world, resin hooks wouldn't have to be babied so much, especially at their price point and with their new not so good replacement policy. But still, the swirls single-handedly helped me make friends again with Bernat Blanket yarn. I had utterly refused to use blanket yarn after HATING to work with it with my older plastic Boye hooks (wretched things!!) The swirls are like a DREAM with the blanket yarn. I would own the 10mm for blanket yarn alone. Truly. I also really like the swirls for roving yarns (such as the scarfie). And the deep cut in the hook (which i don't love for all stitches or yarns) is wonderful for slip stitches and herringbone stitches, among other things. But the swirls have limitations. And, again, the swirls would NEVER EVER replace my tulip hooks. They are only ever going to be for my chunky projects. But sometimes the swirls aren't good for a particular yarn or stitch. For those times, plastic hooks are my only option (since i can't stand working with wood hooks). Prior to the Pryms being available readily, I would use the clover amour hooks. But since I got the Pryms, those poor Clovers have been abandoned!! The Pryms are as good as plastic gets, as far as I am concerned. I love the handle SOOOO much more than the Clovers. And they are so light and smooth (for plastic). I feel extremely minimal drag with the Pryms and don't feel any texture to mine so I am wondering if yours is just slightly off. To be fair, I only have the large size set. I have ZERO need or intention to ever replace my Tulips with any Furls, Prym or any other hook. I have 5-6 sets of Tulips. I am fully committed and in love with them. LOL But the Pryms are a VERY happy and somewhat accidental discovery for my large hooks. I would say that the Pryms (which also do well with blanket yarn, though not as well as the Swirls) are now my "everyday" large hook and the Swirls are what I use for certain types of yarns and stitches. I am very glad to have both but I wouldn't be happy with only the Swirls and the Swirls are better at some things than the Pryms. I got my Pryms on Amazon in a set. They are great and the price, as a set, was excellent. I think about 22 for a set of 5. Can hardly beat that. As you eluded, this review isn't really a true comparison since you aren't using the same yarn for both hooks. As for the scarfie (wool-blend) doing so well, I think that roving style yarns do fairly well on plastic hooks so maybe that is why is the difference.

Hi Jennifer. I don't usually comment, but I agree 100% about the hook vs the yarn makes all the difference in the world. I bought a Prym hook (the exact one you're using, lol) to try when I ordered the Metallico yarn from Hobbii which is very slippery yarn. I loved the friction when I was making ribbing for gloves with Metallico but changed to my Clovers for the acrylic blend body of the glove. You learn something new every day, 🙂thanks for the review

Such great info! A few years ago I went on a search for a hook that I could use for more than 10 minutes that wouldn't hurt my hand. The shape of the hooks you showed is everything for me. Hooks can be expensive so it's nice to see some more affordable options. These would be great if you're a person who likes to keep your hook with your work and have several WIPs.

I feel exactly the same about the Prym's, especially in the smaller sizes with smaller sized yarn and slippery or splitty yarns. The larger Prym's don't have as much friction as the smaller ones. I think they stop being as "grabby" at or after the 6mm J hook, but they are still very much like the Yarnology hooks in those bigger sizes. If I had to pick one or the other to keep, it would probably be the Yarnology. I love that I don't have to store them "hook down" to be able to see the colors to know the sizes. The color for the Yarnology ones are up top with the hook, so you can always see what size you are grabbing without picking them up. It was the Prym hooks that made me realize that I like this shape of hook better than Boye, and now I love the Susan Bates, too, which I didn't when I first learned to crochet, so we definitely have that in common. Thanks for another great review, Jennifer. Hugs & blessings!

that must be true. i have the Pryms, but only in 7mm and up and I LOVE them and they are not grabby at all. I have not used the yarnology but have only felt them on my hand and they don't feel as smooth as the Prym to my hand. For anything 6.5mm and below I am strictly a Tulip girl so I definitely am a snob for smoothness. I guess, for science, I should try a yarnology hook to truly compare it to the Pryms. Ha!

I am a Susan Bates hook lover but have been experimenting with all kinds of hooks lately except furls. I don't want to like what I can't have all the sizes in because of price. Yarnology is not bad but not all sets are the same. The the 24.99 longer set that was 1/2 price last week is my favorite but not a larger handle. Because of hand issues I needing a larger handle now days. The 9.99 and think 12.99 were a for sure no for me. The individual metal with white and colored handles were not all that bad. I love the way Prym hooks are espically the larger sizes by far my favorite. I use an (I) hook a lot and the Prym set does not have an I. Getting used to the longer skinny shaft felt strange, but got easier as I worked with it. The tips get into stitches very easily without any problem on any size. Anything but metal I think has a squeaky kind of sound that bothers me mentally. I think the large sized hooks have less noise than any I have tried, even the larger Clover hooks. Th Prym larger I really, really love. I like Clover regular hooks but think they are to short in length and bother my hand if crocheting very long.
