I'm Diegueno, we're also called Kumeyaay, my reservation is in Lakeside, California. I love watching the styles of dancing from other tribes, years ago there was a man from the Hopi tribe living on our reservation, he was married to my aunt, but they divorced and he continued living there until he passed away.

What an impressive dance! So much stamina in the dancers. The individual interpretations by the dancers showed love of their entire dance. The costumes were clearly works of love and pride for each of the dancers. It was an honour to watch the Butterfly Dance of the Hopi of Hotevilla. I would love to visit the Hopi again, it’s been a long time.

Beautiful costumes and mesmerizing dancing. All in unison, just superb. Do Hopi women dance as well or just the men? Apologies for my ignorance, but I've long wondered if the dancers sing words or simply sounds? Meaning? So fascinating, traditions passed down through centuries.

I saw this back in the 70s. Simply could NOT figure out rhythms.
It is mermerizing! But I thought Hopis forbad to record any ceremonies or dances. My husband and I were told that you could not film, photograph, even make drawings of ceremonies.

I'm not sure, but, as I understand it, there are things about their culture that the Hopi will share with outsiders and things that are too sacred to share. Maybe this was considered ok. Or maybe it was filmed secretly, in which case I'm not gonna watch it, just in case.
@fhberube2631

@@wfcoaker1398 It is too well filmed to have been done secretly. Maybe it was done by someone who asked permission and got it because it is not a dance too sacred to share. Perhaps it was done by a Hopi. In any case it is beautiful. The dance that my husband and I went to had something to do with harvest.

In any event, this is also not considered a powwow in the traditional sense. A sacred dance, yes.

You're right about the recordings and pictures but when it comes to our social dances they're fine and yes this was filmed by a Hopi most of the time we record these to remember our family members who danced that particular time and to share
