Hi Sam. The Kitnaster 61xx was a very basic plastic construction kit, Airfix took over the tooling in the early 70's and then when airfix unloaded their model railway stuff Dapol brought the molds and they still produce it. Airfix, when they introduced heir own 00 r-t-r range in 1978 designed the r-t-r 61xx from scratch and it has no relation to the kit. The 61xx was the first steamer to be introduced into their range and was a ground breaking model for its times in terms of detail and scale diamentions. I have one of the old Airfix branded ones, and although being a bit noisy its a powerful and smooth runner. Anyway great and fair review Jon PS - in real life they were very powerful locos. They could tackle 9-10 coach heavy suburban trains in and out of Paddington and Brimingham Snow Hill with ease. PPs - The small prarrie is a 4575, one of the Collet batch, they have the sloped front to the tanks. The first batch, the Churchward 45xx series had square ended tanks

Hi Sam i loved prarie tanks when they used to be the stock in trade loco at my local station at Cookham Berks in the 50s,so i jumped in and ordered one straight away from Hattons which i received the next day and I quickly unwrapped it and was impressed by the detail of the model but immediately the rear coupling fell off. not deterred by this i used a small piece of blue tack in the aperture to solve the problem, and put it on my rolling road to programme it and it ran very slowly and speed increase was up to spec. I then put it on my track with no running in and the pulling power was only two coaches at first but after running in for 30 mins it improved to 5 coaches 4 with lighting. i must add here my layout is a garden layout with some spots of undulating track which other stock copes with fine, but i was disappointed with the front bogie wheels which decided to derail the whole loco on almost every point and dip and then as a crowning glory it lost the centre wheel crank pin bolt never to been found again! I rang Hattons the next day told them about the crank pin and they did say if they could not get one they would change the loco over. which i agreed with at first but declined and agreed to have a different model instead. I am very disappointed at this outcome because i still like Hornby and hope its a one off glitch and Hattons attiude to this was exemplary

Hi there Sam, I love these locos, big or small. The reason they were nicknamed "tanner oners" is the size of the old sixpence and penny represents the size of the small and big wheels. Have a Google of the coins and you'll see! Great work as ever, Terry.

Hi Sam. The reference to the "Tanner" for the 61xx class of prairie goes back to "Old Money" where a "Tanner" was slang for a "6 penny piece". They were silver in colour (originally made of silver) a two "tanners" equalled one "Shilling". An old shilling is today's five penny piece, making a tanner worth today's two and a half pence. I hoe you can understand my latest piece of trivia. Regards, Alan. PS. I love your videos including the more "off the beaten track" ones. It all adds fun to the day.

This is an interesting one Sam, and for me highlights the dilemma that many modelers face today. People demand so much attention to detail with these locos, yet most people cannot see that detail when the locos are running on a decent size layout. You just look at the curves on most layouts, far tighter than anything you'd get in real life, so everything must be a compromise, so it it worth £100 more for the new model and meeting the demand for detail...definitely not in my humble opinion.

Good Evening Sam, Your review of the Hornby GWR 6110 Large Prairie Tank is smashing. The Hornby Product Code of this model is R2098A, these were produced in 2000 to 2001, making this model 18 or 19 years old. I too have been searching up on the brand new Hornby GWR Large Prairie Tanks, they look awesome, but the prices are quite ridiculous, until we find them at retailers selling them at a much better price, so I would suggest you find any of these new Hornby Large Prairies selling at the cheapest price you can find. Now back to your classic Hornby GWR Large Prairie Tank, 10 coaches, WOW! For an old model, she's powerful and still got alot of strength in herself. 16:08, It is the 4575 Class, you remembered it right the first time. I can see 5 GWR Tank Engines and the odd one out is the GWR Dukedog Class 4-4-0 Tender Locomotive. I both like the Small & Large Prairie Tank Engines. Onces again a smashing review on the Hornby GWR Large Prairie Tank. 5 Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 10/10 Kind regards Jordan Shingler 😉

While there was an Airfix kit , and possibly Kitmaster before , kit from the 1960s , it was just a kit . I think this RTR model and moulding dates from Airfix in 1977 when along with the Class31 it was one of the first locos in the new Airfix Railways range. I think it went onto Mainline then Dapol and finally Hornby. So 4 manufacturers have sold this loco! An excellent review, Sam. The 6100 Tank was a very good model, with an incredible pulling power and a good perfomance. The only downside of the loco (apart from its super speed) is the lack of detailing, and because of that it doesn't make it up to modern standards, but its something forgivable since it is an express model, and in those days the hobby was just for fun, and the engine was considered good if it losely represented its real counterpart, not like nowadays. However, despite its issues it is a good loco, with a good perfomance and it has the charm of being simplistic and enjoyable. I would suggest reviewing the new Hornby version, and maybe later trying the Dapol model. Anyways, I hope you're having a nice day and keep up the good work.

Go for the new model 2-6-2, I say. If you don't, how will you know whether it's as good as the model you've got now or not? As for preference between small and large Prairie Tank Engines, I don't prefer either because I like both types equally. I have a Small Prairie Tank Engine with flat-top side tanks of the 45xx class. She's an excellent runner on my train set track, and I haven't a bad word to say about her or your two models. One engine is as good as another, so the saying goes.

Great video! Do you think you could do one of LMS 6201? I found out that the Princess Royal Class is being redone along with releasing a TTS decoder, and I have since decided to get 6201, since it is my favourite engine. I've had bad experiences with eBay, so I'd like to know to pros and cons of the older version, to see if I REALLY should just go with the old one. Thanks again for the video! You've helped me a lot with determining purchases of mine!

Hi Sam. great video as always. I had this in the BR green brand new in 2005.This was the worst loco I have ever had, the wheels started getting pitted within the first hour and i needed to clean the wheels after each half hour of use. The second worst loco was the Hornby 14xx which was too unpredictable. My third worst loco I had was the Hornby Dean goods. All soon ended up in the bin. All my stock now are all bachmann and so far I've had no issues (3 of these are 15 years old now). Hope you had a good xmas and happy new year to you. CHRIS.

Thanks a lot Chris - yes not brilliant are they, I'm forever cleaning the wheels on mine too! You're right about the 14xx too - a very nasty design on that too, particularly the latest release! Happy New Year, Sam :)

That box is a continuity nightmare 🤣🤣🤣 On the strength of the old model I don't think I'm gonna hold my breath for the new version. Also... A GWR auto train must have both trailers facing in the same direction, for reasons of a mechanical working nature. 😉

I think I will just look for one of the older ones, install a decoder, and spend the 100 or so pounds I saved on something nice! That being said, if you (or me!) can hunt one up for 80-90 pounds, perhaps, that is much more reasonable, and I might be very tempted, particularly if the new one has a solid 5 pole motor and real bearings.
@SamsTrains

Hi Sam, again a really nice review. I like the version you have. Many pre-owned Hornby, Dapol, or Mainline models are available at Hatton's. But the most models are damaged. And the new Hornby loco to pre-order is expensive.

17:43, Bullman weighs 20 tons? The heaviest species of Cow (Chianina) max for the bulls at least is 1.57 tons, plus Bullman is just as heavy as Paralititan, a Saurapod (20 - 59 tons).

Examining that unpainted picture; U can count on a full metal chassis on the new one as well, as metal rods and pony-wheels (maybe with pickups). See trough under boiler part, and finer handrails. But the whistles are plastic, as the lamp-irons, and other parts on the buffer-beam, chimney too ... What i say is to wait till it comes out, look one up in person, (listen some verdict - maybe), and than decide if u like it and it is worth it for u.
@SamsTrains
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tom - that's good to hear - they usually do have metal chassis, so I think we can be hopeful of that! Bare in mind that the photo just showed an early sample - it may have just been a plastic mock-up! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Great review Sam of a top loco from my favorite company of the Big Four. It really is a shame that no manufacturer can do the 14xx justice in model form, such a smart little tank engine deserves better. Regarding the large Prairie i will save up some money and buy the new tooled GWR version when that comes out. Be well and keep safe, regards Gary.
