This is a re-issue of an old Lima model, hence the basic quality. The 'real' trams were widely used in Germany and other counties and date back to the sixties. They were available in standard or metre gauge and also as a double articulated unit (8 axles). Lima had them in various liveries.

Hey Sam, a few remarks from a German perspective: First off, for future reference, the letter „ß“ in „Straßenbahn“ is not a „b“, it‘s an „Es-Zett“, pronounced as a double „s“. Note the second bump it has compared to the lower-case „b“ and the small gaps between the vertical stroke and the two bumps. Now for something more rail-related. The GT6 tram type shown here was still in service in Germany until at least spring of this year with the Schöneiche-Rüdersdorfer-Straßenbahn (SRS) in/near the southeast of Berlin. They may have been retired now though, I‘m not sure. This kind of GT6 is remarkable in that it‘s a bidirectional design, whereas most German trams from the era were single-directional. Regarding the relationship between Coca Cola and German rail vehicles, after the end of the GDR a number of East German double-decker coaches as well as an articulated double-deck coach set received full-body Coca Cola ads. I can‘t think of another company that received such massive ad space on coaching stock. The recently retired Class 485 EMUs of Berlin‘s suburban rail system were also nicknamed „coke cans“ due to their initial livery of bright red with dark grey window bands. You see, the connection of Coca Cola and the German rail scene reaches a good deal deeper than just a tram. Have a good start into 2024!
@denischick2519

Great context. Pity Sam doesn’t research before commenting. Of course the big Santa ads will be vinyls so the decoration looks like the real thing. As for the interior, it’s an old model where the mechanism will show. Times change with the generations. Same needs to reflect on today’s generation of products and reflect on inflation. These things cost a lot to design and manufacture in 2023!

The tram is actually a late Lima modell, before they merged with Rivarossi and later with the French Joueff and Spanish Electrotren. During this time, the more quality based models were transormed in to Rivarossi brand while the rest was kept as more economical an in many cases rather crude Lima line. These trams were offered in many versions, even as 12 mm narrow gauge versions and for a layout, they are more useful compared their rivals made by Roco as they are designed to be double ended and won't needturn around loops as the single sided (with doors on just on the right side only) Roco models. But what I have seen the Roco models look better and ae more detailed. They showed up in the late 1980.s on Lima line and I have no idea when they were transformed in to Rivarossi line. Merry Christmas!

Happy Xmas Sam. Quite an interesting model and review but do be aware that R isn't seen as premium over here, rather as budget. Traction tyres is a standard practice here. Even a loco at ~950 grams (our new Vectron from M) still will have them. Inclines with a long consist with all metal coaches are a piece of cake; not even the slightest slowdown. Metal pantos are as per default here as well. The plastic ones are typical for British model brands. We can only imagine that most of the revenue on this one went to CC but perhaps not out of special sales. LOL, ß = double ss... Hence Strassenbahn. The paint job is rather slapdash on this model tbh, especially the black rims around de windows are fuzzy and unsharp in some areas. The price even at discount remains quite stiff; we'd rank this around the £ 70 / € 80 as a model, however collectors for CC can go quite wild, lol. Cheerio and best wishes 🎁🎄🎅

Just a little point to solidify my reputation here of being a boring character ; the kinky "b" in the name "StraBenbahn" is an eszet, and it is pronounced as a double s. For the model, sorry, but not over GBP 50. It's an outdated model repurposed, the molds amortized since ages and the simplistic construction, plus the lack of features, even at the price you paid, it's not enough. I can imagine the model proposed at GBP 178 RRP is a revamp of this one. May I suggest you something ? It's a model from Rivarossi I have, the Gr. 835 Italian shunting engine. If you mind, this would be interesting to have your pick on her. There is some available on the RIvarossi UK website, you still can buy one if you are interested.

This model the double ended Duwag tram Originated under Lima many years ago it was a quite considerable interest to UK tram modellers as it is a double ended car with doors on both sides so was capable of mixing with UK trams on our side of the road. In being that it is quite unusual amongst Duwag production as most of their cars are single ended as made by people like Roco. and Halling. Unfortunately it developed a bad reputation both here and on the continent for short life of certain mechanism components before giving grief. Being the less common of the Duwag Artics it did have a little bit of sales resistance on the continent because if your chosen system didn't use them you bought the alternatives. When he transferred to Rivarossi after the mergers or shall we say the labelling changed the gears did change colour but I've not had any indication from a continental modelling friends that it is any better that said I rather suspect that because of its relative rarity in prototype form it has not been a good seller on the continent no one has reported that they are happy with the new mechanism likewise we have had no moans that it is no better but I'm not sure how many folk actually shelled out the money for something that they weren't sure of based on what work they'd had to do to the one they'd got. That said it must be emphasised that not every Lima version died some are still in good condition it was a gamble and it was such a well known gamble the the lack of information about the current being bad merely may represent the lack of sales. It's a distinct shame that Rivarossi did not reintroduce the Statbahn M /N Model which was a much more widespread used tram and also double ended a little bit more modern than these. If that had been reintroduced using the same mechanism upgrades I think we might have had some accurate reports but such is life. Very few people in this country decided to risk their money on this upgraded version with no information as to whether it was any better and it's one of those things that you need somebody to run one for a few years before you know the actual answer. All that may of course explain two things one why this more accurate model has been chosen for sale under the Coca Cola deal and two some at least of the tooling is very old probably 30 odd years and the mechanism retool was was this century still a number of years ago now. Hornby have of course re levered some of their ex Corgi static model Blackpool trams in Coca Cola but there has never been a Coca Cola Advert tram in Blackpool they are fictitious if relatively easily motorised with a decent mechanism which is a bit of a shame as their bodies are reasonably accurate they have a lot of original features not all of which still apply to a tram dating from 1934 which was in traffic up to 2011 and survives in preservation in numbers some still in the Blackpool Heritage Fleet. The model's origin and date of the tooling for all the body parts trail bogeys et cetera et cetera and probably the basic underframe as well May well explain why you got it at the price you did.

Great review as always Sam and I hope you're having a great Christmas. I want to add a little bit of prototype history on these trams. Duewag produced a huge amount of articulated trams starting in the 1950s that are all part of the GT series (GT stands for Gelenktriebwagen which means articulated multiple unit in German). The design was highly customizable with different variants sold to cities in all of Western-Germany and even outside of it (like Copenhagen for example). Parts of the Duewag design were also licensed to other tram manufacturers like the Austrian company Lohner that produced trams for Vienna. GT trams exist both in standard and narrow-gauge and in different lengths ranging from the 6-axle GT6 to the 12-axle GT12 (the longest articulated tram in existence for quite a while). Some variants were bi-directional like the Rivarossi model, although most were not. GT6 and GT8 were by far the most popular variants, sometimes also used with a 4-axle trailer to increase capacity. Most GT trams were still in use by the early 2000s and some also received a second life with tram operators from other countries. Some even ended up in fairly exotic places like Egypt (that was the fate of the Copenhagen GT6 variant and they are still in service as far as I know) but most second-hand examples went to transport authorities from the former eastern bloc looking to cheaply replace their poorly maintained tram fleets. Many examples ended up in Poland and in Romania and some had continued their regular service until very recently. Over here (Poznań in Poland) there are still four GT8 trams in limited service and one of them is actually serving as a Christmas tram right now, with a sponsorship from Kit Kat of all companies

You have been sold a freelance "Coca Cola Christmas Tram". The Heidelberg version has accurate municipal transport logos, fleet number, destination blinds, and German language advertising boards. (I use Lendons of Cardiff for Hornby Europe spares, they have great customer service).

Either this model does ot originates from Rivarossi or a lot of brands developed their own GT6. 2/3 of the model-club I'm in, are tram-carzy (sadly) and we have about a dozen of GT6s from Roco, some Lima, and maybe some from Halling (or kits with Halling drive trains). They all run fine, but very light, and derail easily (we have a 60m modular tram system layout, with working car system + H0 RC cars) . We do run the "double sided" ones in pairs tough, so yes there is a coupling option for trams. And only our GT8 has that huge motor but that drives 2 bogies, and it does have a flywheel.

Hi Sam, gret channel you have! Maybe interesting to know : good old Düwag GT6 HSB nr. 238 still exists! It has been sold to a small tramline in the neighbourhood of Berlin, the Schöneiche-Rüdersdorfer Strassenbahn GmbH where it still runs under the nr. 48 in a blue livery, making publicity for a local radio channel. But... Its days are numbered since the last few years a lot of more recent second hand trams have arrived on that line. Nr. 48 is - occasionally - still used for reinforcement services for school traffic. Regarding the plastic hook under the small bumper : in reality, the vehicle has a beaker coupling which is hardly noticeable (and it is certainly not prominently popping out from the vehicle's chassis like it does on the model. Therefore, it should be able to reliably run on a paved tramway track (no exposed dust-collecting gears), negotiate sharp turns with ease (down to 200mm radius), climb substantial grades (up to 8 percent) and collect current from an overhead wire. In all those aspects the model is a complete failure and a disappointment, I'm sorry. Good as a cheap kitsch souvenir, but I wouldn't seriously consider buying one even for a quarter of the price.

Can't stand Coca Cola so if this is given to me along with any Hornby adverts junk they would be straight to the bin hardly prototypical;I'm surprised that you wasted good money and wasted your time reviewing this rubbish

Seems decent, definitely better than the other trolleys. The biggest issues with it seem to be the lack of interior detail (considering how many windows there are) and the mechanism. Did you have to repair the PCC Street Car after the worst model trains of 2023 video?

80 pounds maybe but 180 doors should open, all powered trucks , all lights should work and a better interior

I'm afraid Hornby and Premium are two words I wouldn't use in the same sentence concerning quality and value for money.

Coke is such a silly crossover product to do with model trains, but at least this sort of makes sense given here in Melbourne trams often have this style of advertising on them Speaking of Melbourne trams, there is a model of the old W class trams which oddly enough is in OO scale not HO for some reason, maybe a better Australian model for you to try if you can get your hands on one easily enough!

the interior shots. Gets viewer's attention with some nasty ejector pins marks on the moulding then bam! with the visible wiring.

Looks OK on the track with the decoration, but not so good on close inspection. Worth the money you paid I think but not worth the full price.

Not in defense of Hornby/riverossi but the licensing fees from Coca-Cola may be part of the price

I assume the couples are for when want couple multiple trams together to increase capacity. Not sure if it’ll work in the model.

Note: the letter ß is a double s, so it should be pronounced "Strassenbahn".
