I ruined my skin recently because I got hooked on the “cuticle”-obsessed influencers. I purchased oils and nippers and scissors and tried to mimic their tutorials. I was in so much pain with raw and torn skin, thinking there was something anatomically weird about my nails. So I did research and saw these diagrams and realized I had been removing and picking with living skin. Thanks for creating this video. There are so many nail influencers without anatomy knowledge spreading misinformation or unintentionally misleading followers because they are vague and aren’t clear with advice. I hope this information becomes more widespread. Thanks again.

@@TheSalonLife The difference between my proximal nail fold and my cuticle! I've struggled with picking and biting around my nails since childhood and a few years ago took to bringing a nail kit with me everywhere to nip and "neaten" my cuticles instead of ripping them apart and turns out that's all I was doing anyway! When you showed the diagrams and did your little example I realized that what i was nipping was just creating a vicious cycle of an ugly, dry proximal fold that would drive me to nip and bother it even more creating more, essentially, scar tissue. Even when I would leave my nails alone for a while and my nail folds would look good, so many videos made it seem necessary to clip that bit of skin, calling it the 'cuticle', in order to get a clean looking manicure. So now, I'll just give them some rehab time and use my shea butter.

Thanks to your videos I no longer cut my living skin! I have not had any long stretchy thick dry skin or hangnails since. It took about 10 weeks but with patience I am now enjoying beautiful “cuticles” people think I go to the salon to get perfect manicures but all I do is keep them oiled and push back the skin weekly. There’s hardly even anything to scrape off anymore. SO GRATEFUL! And… saving lots of time and money on nail treatment gimmicks😅

Very impressive video. I’m a manicurist of 30 years in California and it’s very rare I hear other manicurists that understand basic nail structure. Here in California even 30 years ago we learned nail anatomy. The one thing I would highly recommend with this person is to come in and get a weekly manicure until I see she is on the right track. This has always been my logic with this type of damage, people need support. So this is obviously some habits she has formed and need to gradually stop and that takes time. So when a client comes in they feel a sense of obligation to perform well. They want to get better with undoing these habits. I think with her keeping it super simple with the Kerasal lotion & CND treatment and that’s it. Why because of the open skin and inflamed eponychium. See how that helps after a week and go from there. We truly are like the therapist (trying to help understand the behavior to help correct or improve it), and the manicurist. Also, not expecting miracles but slow and steady progress in the right direction. This could look like 4 steps forward and 2 steps back, but you’re still ahead 2 steps. You should totally do an update on this client…I so wish I could help her. 💕 Great job on this video ‼️

I enjoy a manicure, but I’ve never had one where they didn’t trim the nail fold. In fact the last one I had, they got quite carried away and I left with my nail fold bleeding. It was pretty painful. Plus, they NEVER get the nail shape right. NEVER. All I want is something natural that follows the shape of my nail bed. But I’ve only been happy a couple times. 🤦🏻♀️ Anyway, this video was super informative. I can take what I’ve learned and do it myself.

Definitely something I’ve been working on for several years. I find when I go through really anxious/stressful times that unconscious picking habit comes back and my thumbs look like this and worse. Diligent manicures, a quick clean with blue cross rather than going crazy with cutters, and lots of moisturizing oils/lotions within reach when I find myself picking have helped. Car, desk, coffee table, night stand. For hangnails I carefully trim and use liquid bandage to help it from catching or tearing further and keeping it clean.

I noticed after I had a pedicure that I started forming callouses. So naturally I thought I have to remove those callouses with a foot file. It is a never ending cycle. But I’m going to try your advice with my fingernails because I’m guilty of cutting the living skin but I’m also going to try regular maintenance with the soles of my feet too and see what happens.

🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 Thank you so much for this information! I had no idea about the different between the proximal nail fold and the cuticle. Now it makes perfect sense why I’ve struggled so much with the skin around my nails being ragged and unhealthy. No matter what I did, the skin (what I thought was cuticle) just grew back harder and thicker. And in my quest to get rid of what I thought was the cuticle, I’ve probably been damaging the unexposed growing nail which then would explain why my nails grow out to be thin and easily broken.

I so appreciate your commitment to the science of this! I’ve been getting into self-nail care for about a year but until I found your channel I was still confused about how to properly and safely care for my “cuticle.” The Olive and June method is the closest to what you’ve taught me - they suggest just push back your cuticle and moisturize and buff the lower nail but the skin around my nails just wasn’t looking great and I needed to know the what and the why. Because I didn’t have regular nail care before, I did have that stretching of the proximal nail fold onto the nails a bit and I would just infrequently push it back and end up with a lot of raggedy pieces around the nail. After watching your videos it all finally clicked! I now regularly push back the proximal nail fold, all the time! And moisturize with oil and/or lotion every single time I get my hands wet as Anna suggests then once a week I remove the ACTUAL tiny bit of cuticle from the nail with an orange stick or scraper. And finally my nails look so pretty, healthy and amazing. Now I’m trying a dimethyl urea based strengthener (Olive and June) to try to grow them a little longer. Thank you Anna! Side note, I use the same Shaka fluide LRP sunscreen as you I order it from Europe to US because it’s the best sunscreen in the world. That and Riemann P20 Suncare for Kids.

Your knowledge and ability to share what I need to know about caring for my nails has given me courage to begin nail self-care. I’ve had gel and dip powder for about 20 years because I’ve always had soft/weak nails that easily peel and break, and terrible “cuticles” (which I now know is living skin) and actual cuticle that extends onto my nails. I’ve decided to try natural nails and see how they are (I’m 73). I had the dip removed at the salon and have suffered through the weeks of growing out the damaged nail. This included split and sore skin around the nails. I’m finally past that stage, and wish I could find a nail tech with the care and knowledge that you have. I’ve only seen techs being not gentle about pushing back the cuticle and too quick about trimming the skin. Thank you SO much for sharing proper and careful nail, cuticle, and skin care. I now feel confident that I can do this on my own because of your tutorage.

Oh my gosh! I love this video! I was very pleased you showed ridges in the nail and said, "do not buff them off". I have ridges in my nails and have always had them. When I started painting my nails in high school, I would try every ridge filler there was available to me and still I had them showing in my polish. There are so many KZitem videos talking about why you have them (nutrition, alcohol use, etc.) but none talk about the nails own natural protective attitude of itself. I haven't worn polish for a few years. I just cannot tolerate the fumes. So, I tolerate nail breakage and try just to keep my nails neatly filed and not worry about even nail lengths. I will say that I have finally found a multi supplement that works with my body and my skin and nails benefit with it. Plus, a big plus, I started using oils and my nails appear smoother and I do not get hang nails or overgrown (stretched as you say) cuticles. Even good lotions did not make this difference for my nails. I keep oils in so many places! Favorite scented oils encourage me to use them and help calm me when I smell them. This video is so nice for understanding the nail and encouraging the loving treatment our nails deserve. Short, long or somewhere between, well-kept nails are so flattering, right? Thank you for this Anna!

Thank you so much! I’ve been trying to have “good nails” for awhile, but I’ve always had bad “cuticles,” which I now know is the wrong term, as well as hangnails, torn skin, and nails that are weak and tear like paper. Earlier this year, I had 2 sets of acrylics done. The first set was removed by the nail tech literally sliding a sharp tool under the acrylic and popping them off, which shredded my nails. The second set was removed with soaking and e-filing, and then she asked if I wanted her to buff them and I said yes. 🤦♀️ Disaster. I’ve been wearing glue-on and stick-on nails ever since, but the skin around my nails has been getting worse and worse, so today I decided to look for videos about how to have healthy cuticles and here you are! Instant subscriber, and I’ve learned so much already!! My Amazon cart is overflowing with new products. 😬 Do you know anything about the Rescue Rxx being unavailable? Thank you for diving that deep. I learned a lot. My skin around my nails sticks to the cuticle and if it's growing down with the nail, when I forget to take care, I am quickly reminded by painful wounds. That's why when washing my hair and I applied the conditioner or mask I push my skin around my nails back very gentle during the time I let the conditioner sit with the conditioner on my hands. Plus I'm using hand cream and oil a few times a day. Have it next to the soap on my sink. Now my nails and skin look at least ok cared for without adding a completely new routine to my day. That's what I like about the depth you are teaching. Understanding opens up possibilities to include nailcare in the day as it fits. Thank you for teaching ☺️

This is SUPER AWESOME! Probably like most of the general public, I thought my keratinized proximal nail fold was my "cuticle." Thank you so much for teaching us about healthy nail and skin care!

So happy to hear this. But it's the skin around the nails that looks better. Not the cuticle. reference: schoonscientific.com/2019/whats-new-nail-anatomy-latest-facts/

Thank you so much, so kind of you to say this Manuel :) This information is quite new, so I'm not surprised. This didn't make sense to me since the beginning of my career. Doug Schoon spent lots of time in the last couple of years researching this and it finally makes sense so this is exciting:)

This was incredibly helpful, thank you! It’s crazy that I never knew any of this. I’ve bitten my nails my whole life and stopped a few months ago (I’m 34). As they grew out, I thought I had a short nail bed, weird cuticles, etc. Watching your videos I learned a gentle way to take care of my nails every day. My nail beds are actually longer. My cuticles no longer become overgrown. It absolutely blows my mind. I’m curious - what is your opinion on Dazzle Dry vs regular Polish? I know it’s a better option than gel Polish, but do you think it’s healthier than using regular Polish? Thank you again for everything you post! This is life changing for me, as I think this understanding will inspire me to care for my nails. Until now my only motivation to stop biting was appearance. But now I’m thinking more about finger and skin health than I ever have before.

Seriously enjoyed! Stopped cutting "pseudocuticles" when I had lumpectomy and 1 nodule removed non affected. Been nail crazy all my life, but basically did them myself. Derm nurse, dealing with onychomycosis/graphosis in hosp. setting) Great job, sending out yrs) Had 1 yr of gel w/o cutting and took a break only to discover major damage to 1 nail Took about 8 mos. Daughter took nail course, ended up with severe reaction to Gel. However, even in course, always referred to "cuticle." I stopped all manicure but my own. Oil.cleaning nail bed Inc. cuticle area with emery board. Lately saw 2 nails w changes... Loceryl and filing, oil and regular polish. Seems to have resolved. I need more oiling. So happy to hear exact explanation good pics. Can't seem to access my camera.will send it separately.

I have learned so much watching you! I had a gel polish removed while on vacation, and feel she ruined my nails. I was searching for a cuticles only mani to have this week, since my nails are clipped to the nub, so don’t need any trimming or filing, but the cuticles are so jagged, I thought they needed to be trimmed to keep them treated with oil, which I am doing MANY times a day. I will continue instead, with your tips, and hope for success, and will stop using the nail hardener. Thank you so much!

I love that there are more and more formally educated nail techs coming forward to spread the facts!!! Influencer Russian Manicures have taken over social media and honestly it makes me sick, the same way duck nails made wayyy to big of a comeback. There are very important reasons as to why any self-respecting nail technician would refuse to perform Russian Manicures, especially any self-respecting and knowledgeable tech that is not in the nail game just to make money!!

Great info- I always wondered why cutting the cuticles made them look so bad the next day. Something I’ve been really liking is the Olive and June cuticle products. Their cream is super light and non greasy/messy- I keep it in my desk and just put it on throughout the day while I’m working. Their cuticle balm is a great intensive treatment- good for overnight or while watching tv (as it’s super heavy and greasy) since it takes a while for it to absorb.

Thank you for a great video! In my opinion the thing with one layer of nail polish being better than two or more is due to the fact that one layer is much more elastic. The more you put on, the stiffer it gets so it works like a hardener.

Excellent video going over the anatomy. I am a male, and as many men who work with their hands incessantly my proximal and lateral nail folds have looked like a crime scene for the past few years. My thumbs' lateral nail fold are at times peeling around to the front of the pad/print. I get spontaneous eruptions on my proximal nail fold on every finger but my pinky that turn into corn-like hard skin that will peel, crack and fray. It started with the thumb and has moved to the others. I have looked into scleroderma and dermatomyositis as possible culprits- I think there is vascular deficiency involved. One of the things I have noted is that wearing moisturizing gloves at night is that 2-3 nights into wearing them I might reduce the peeling and cracking, but at the expense of red inflammation of the nailfold and the cycle will start anew. I have tried every moisturizer/ointment/balm under the sun to deal with it...O'keefe's, Solar Oil, Burt's Bees, Cerave, Bag Balm, Psoriasin, Kerasal, pure lanolin, the list could go on thrice as long. I few days ago I bought Onsen Cuticle Serum on Amazon and the stuff is expensive but my nailfolds and cuticles are looking better than they have in well over a year but it's early to tell. I wanted to make this post in part to suggest that the Onsen might help the desperate, but also because while your video is certainly informative, those of us with the worst situations may have deeper causation. I need to see a rheumatologist, and some struggling may need to as well.

That's why I don't go to salon for manicure. Almost all of nail "specialists" don't even know the nail anatomy, the function of every part of the nail. They work with it every day and haven't even think to look for basic anatomy... My nails are fine, I just cut them once in a while. Now I ordered a file and a nail polish base to thicken them a little bit since it pisses me off when they soften after I wash something in a water.
