The whole point of shaving the bride's hair and dressing her up as a man was to essentially masquerade her as a dude because Spartan men were not really used to being around women. Given how they lived among other men for most of their lives and most have never met a woman until their wedding day, meeting one for the first time would be quite a startling experience especially if they happen to be their wife.
@TopBanana1127

It's because Spartan men had to sneak in the women's house at night to see her as they lived in the barracks and couldn't see them until they were 30. This is because the Spartans believed if you hardly saw your wife, your sex would be better and make better children.

What they don't tell you is the true underlying power dynamic. Spartan girls were taught and required to fight as brutally as the boys were all during growing up, and to be deadly with her weapons, and when her husband died she inherited everything he owned. For her it was a business gamble to get married, likely to result in long term wealth and gain and if he died young, so much the better for her! She could remarry again, lather rinse repeat, and get even wealthier over time. But to the men, he better hope she really liked him because marriage was a dangerous proposition and if his wife didn't like him, or he pissed her off too badly, his chances of survival were exactly zip to zilch.

The problem of shaved hair in marriage was that Spartan males and females were raised separatedly, to the point that the first contact a Spartan boy would have with a girl is in the wedding - so, to ease the tension and not cause much aversion, Spartan females would look like males. They were also integral to the eventual destruction of Sparta by rioting after a particularly devastating earthquake, which was helped by an invasion by...athens, if I remember correctly? Homosexuality was fairly normalized among the Greeks. For another example, check out the Sacred Band of Thebes. They were the lynch-pin of the war which unseated the Spartan influence in Greece, and they were also literally 150 pairs of male lovers. The defeminisation of Spartan brides is actually thought, by some, to be because as boys Spartan males would have older mentors who would be responsible for them, and also have sex with them until the age of about 20 years.
